Toclean the surface, use Enviro Klean 2010, Consolideck Cleaner/Degreaser, Sure Klean Asphalt & Tar Remover or Sure KleanFast Acting Stripper. Does notdisappear when wet.Cause – Water depositedor collected in the wall Lime run on brickduring construction oras a result of inadequate waterproofing dissolves water-solublecalcium compounds. Over a long period of time, the watermigrates through openings in the wall surface. As the waterevaporates, the dissolved calcium reacts with the atmosphereand crystallizes to produce a hard calcium carbonate crust onthe masonry surface.Removal – Carefully remove as much of the crust as possibleusing wooden scrapers. Then use Sure Klean Custom MasonryCleaner or Heavy Duty Concrete Cleaner following labelinstructions. Repeated controlled applications and agitationmay be required.Prevention – Protect wall cavities from rainwater duringconstruction. Clean with the appropriate Sure Klean newconstruction cleaner. Protect the cleaned masonry surfaceswith Weather Seal Siloxane PD or Siloxane WB Concentrate.Acid burnDescription – Uneven yellowor gold stain on brickface and in mortar joints.Stained areas may alsoexhibit severe etching ormortar discoloration.Cause – Cleaning withmuriatic acid. Acid andimpurities in the acidAcid burn on brickare rapidly absorbedby porous masonryand cannot be thoroughly water-rinsed. Oxidation of embeddedmetals migrates to the surface as the substrate dries.Removal – Remove surface copper staining with Sure Klean LightDuty concrete Cleaner, Sure Klean Light Duty RestorationCleaner or Sure Klean 800 Stain Remover. RestorationSilicone sealant bleedDescription – Dark or lightbands on either side ofsoft silicone joints. Seenmost often in naturalstone or concrete panels.Cause – Non-drying siliconeoils from the sealant jointleach into the adjacentstone, concrete ormasonry substrate. LightSilicone residue on blockbands result when theleached oils repel water. Dark bands result when the leached oilsattract airborne particulate.Removal – Remove the sealant causing the stain. Replace withnew sealant which is proven to be non-bleeding. Prime asrecommended by the sealant manufacturer. Use Sure KleanDicone NC 9 or Sure Klean Dicone NC 15 Gel to remove residualstaining. Depending on the severity and depth of staining,repeated applications may be required. Follow label instructions.Prevention – Many silicone sealant manufacturers recommend jointprimers to prevent or minimize silicone sealant bleed. Choosea high-quality, non-bleeding sealant. Follow manufacturer’sinstallation instructions.Hard water depositsDescription – A hard,gray or white depositin and on the surfaceof masonry. At groundlevel, the stain patternoften reflects howthe base of the wall iswetted with landscapeirrigation systems.Similar stains arealso seen on surfacesHard water deposits on brickin close proximity towater-cooling towers or water-treatment facilities.Cause – Contamination of masonry surfaces by accidentalexposure to water sources that contain a high mineral or saltcontent. Spray paint(Enamel)Spray paint is typically made from acrylic or polyurethaneresins that dry to a very hard durable finish.
