Page 10ALTAR AND ROSARY NEWSSt. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society is alive and well and looking forward to another season ofprayer and friendship. Our purse sale in March was very successful, raising almost 1100 which will pay for churchexpenses of candles, wine, hosts, vestment cleaning and much more. Thank you to all whodonated purses and stopped by to check out the great selection of new and like-new items.May 9 was our instillation of officers with myself returning as president, Peggy Russell as vice-president,Kathy Freeman as secretary and Rose Freeman’s appointment as treasurer. We attended the 8:30 Mass followed by brunch, a short meeting and the instillation. We won’t be meeting in June or July but will hold ourannual audit in August with our regular meetings beginning in September. Our Day of Recollection was held on May 17 with Donna Humphrey as our speaker. The day began with Mass,a May Crowning by St. Mary’s 8th grade students and then Donna’s presentation. Our day wouldn’t becomplete without a luncheon catered by Jennifer Ehlke and of course the recitation of the rosary. Women fromthe area churches were invited to join us for this special day.As in past years, A&R will be holding a bake sale at the parish feast day celebration on August 15. All fundsdonated at that time are presented to the parish. Because this sale is just for one evening, only half of ourmembers are contacted to bake so please don’t be offended if you aren’t called! We’ll be having our annualbake sale the weekend before Thanksgiving and all members will be asked to donate goodies at that time. Those funds remain with A&R to cover altar expenses. As always, new members are invited and encouraged to join us. Meetings are usually held the third Thursday ofthe month except for during the summer and are always listed in the parish bulletin. We gather in the WeigandRoom just before 11:00 and then head to the Lower Chapel to recite the rosary with Fr. Charlie celebratingBenediction. A short meeting and refreshments follow in the Weigand Room. What a great way for ladies whoare available one Thursday morning a month to easily become more active in the parish, pray together anddevelop lasting friendships. Please feel free to contact me at JoanP821@aol.com if you have questions.Enjoy your summer months!Joan PatchinMay 28STREAM EventJune 5Preschool & Kindergarten CelebrationJune 6Honors AssemblyJune 68th Grade GraduationJune 7Last Day of SchoolJune 8200 Club DinnerPicture of the bell that was in the tower of theGuardian Angel building. Page 11Fr. TomI wrote about my reflections aboutgoing to school here at St. Mary’s inthe last edition of The Bells. This article will be a short history of theschool on the occasion of the 160thanniversary of the school. The second pastor of our parish, Rev.Robert A. Sidney, started our schoolin 1859, the year he became pastor. The only parish building was a framechurch on the southwest corner ofthe 4th St. and Middle Ave, whereJim Deery’s offices are now. Fr. Sidney arranged a room in the church toserve as a classroom and for the nextseveral years we had a one roomschool. Until the fall of 1886 lay women taught the students. They wereMrs. Tompkins, Miss Hinds, Miss Tierney, and the Cassidy sisters. The fifth pastor, Rev. Louis Molon, saw the need for a larger school. Hisfirst solution was to enlarge thechurch in 1865 and make more classrooms. When that didn’t suffice, andseeing the need for a larger churchbuilding, he bought two large lots onthe northeast corner of 4th and Middle, where our church now stands. The first Elyria public school was onthe second floor of the village hall onCourt St., facing Ely Square. The parish bought this “yellow” building andmoved it to one of these lots in 1867.The next pastor, Rev. John Shaffeld, went about building the present brickchurch. It was opened in 1886. The“yellow” building was torn down andhauled away. The old frame churchwas converted into classrooms andbecame the school. Fr. Shaffeld arranged for sisters from the Congregation of St. Joseph to begin teaching inthe school. The first convent stoodon 4th St., west of the frame church, approximately where my house nowstands. The Sisters of St. Josephtaught here from the fall of 1886 tothe spring of 1897. That Septemberthe Sisters of Notre Dame beganteaching here. Over the years thatthese good women served here therewere 275 assigned to our school. The next big changes to our schooloccurred during Fr. Shaffeld’s pastorate. The school census kept growingand a larger building was needed. In1901 the Guardian Angel building waserected, complete with a school bellin the tower. As the tower aged andbecame structurally unsound the bellcould no longer be used. It was removed in the late 1950s and now sitson a porch on Catawba Island. In 1907a new convent was built to the eastof the Guardian Angel building, where the Marian building nowstands. In 1915 there were 10 teachers and410 students in the school. In 1912 ahigh school was started as part of theparish school. It was a three partprogram. It was closed in 1923 tomake more room for the elementaryprogram. The next major changes took placeshortly after Msgr William Newtonwas named pastor in 1945. One of hisfirst tasks was to help get a Catholichigh school off and running. As partof this the Marian building was erected and in 1949 became the first ElyriaDistrict Catholic High School. Whenthe present EC was completed thehigh school students moved there. The Marian building became our junior high. To make room for this newbuilding the stone convent wasmoved further east, to where the St.Joseph building is now.The baby boom was being felt in theschool and in 1952 Msgr Newton arranged for the purchase of the StangMotor building on 3rd St. This wasmodified into classrooms and giventhe name Pius X building. The primarystudents went to school there and ifmy memory serves me correctly theold show room was used as a gymuntil the St. Paul Presbyterian churchwas purchased. This was used as gymand parish hall until the present hallwas built on its site. The convent wastorn down and hauled away whenthe St. Joseph building was erected.Sadly, we did not have nuns teachingand staffing the school anymore. This was pretty much a nuts and boltshistory of our school. As I said thisyear we are celebrating the school’s160th anniversary. Next year we willbe celebrating the 175th of our parish. There is much more to historythan nuts and bolts. We would like toinclude these stories in our celebrating and reminiscing. We would like toinclude stories of our history in theweekly online Bells. If you have memories of our school and/or parishplease get them to me or the churchoffice so we can include them as weremember these two anniversaries.Remembering thepast.

A brief history of St. Mary Magdalene Parish: St. Mary Magdalene Parish had its origins in 1998 when a group of the Catholic faithful in the Flint/Gresham area approached Bishop Edmund Carmody and asked for permission to establish a parish. The bishop began by allowing Mass to be celebrated in Flint each Sunday by the priests of the Cathedral.

The East Baton Rouge Parish is the third most populated Parish in Louisiana, after Orleans Parish (484,647) and Jefferson Parish (455,466). However, in the 1990s it was also one of the fastest growing Parishes in the State of Louisiana; the Parish added about 38,000 people, second only to St. Tammany Parish which added 46,760 people.
