Promote Transformation and DiscoveryBecause a primary charge of KAUST is to promote the transformation and discovering of ideas, the buildings themselves manifest a similar dynamism. It is especially pronounced at night whenthe setting sun allows for more activity and life in public spaces and the campus undergoes adramatic transformation. Though KAUST’s architecture is designed to be quiet during the day,the buildings come alive at dusk to reveal a more active, outgoing character.Large Scale Model of SustainabilityKAUST achieved LEED Platinum status, the largest institution in the world to be so honored atthe time. Its physical campus and operations reinforce sustainable patterns of living to SaudiArabia’s population. The project’s sensitivity to the natural environment and fragile ecosystemsalong the Red Sea Coastal plain has set a strong regional precedent for creating environmentallyresponsible large-scale developments. Currently the university is demonstrating new ways tobuild in the region and promote responsible stewardship of the environment.AwardsLab of the Year (2011) – R&D MagazineEmerging Research and Science Park – Association of University Research ParksLibrary Building Award – AIA/ALAInternational Project of the Year – Sustain MagazineExcellence in Architecture Merit Award (KAUST Library) – AIA San FranciscoEnergy Sustainability Merit Award (KAUST Library) – AIA San FranciscoDesign Award (KAUST Library) – AIA San FranciscoIIDA Award (KAUST Library) – IIDA Northern CaliforniaTop 10 Green Projects – AIA Committee on the EnvironmentTop 10 LEED Projects (#1 Ranking) – Interiors & SourcesHonor Award – AID St. LouisGreen GOOD DESIGN Award – European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban StudiesInternational Architectural Award – Chicago AthenaeumCharter Award – Congress for the New UrbanismHonor Award – ASLA GeorgiaAIA 2010 COTE Award (only overseas winner) Project TeamProject Management: Aramco Project ManagementConstruction Firms: Oger International, Saudi OgerArchitectural and Design Firm: HOKCover: Study spaces designed with comfortablefurnishings allow for casual exchanges or focusedstudy.
