Ourproblem was that it had to be BIG – big enough to handle theentire load of the FL-2000 series case cleaners. The solutionwas an injection molded reversible part. To accompany the CV-750, the CM500 does the same job as the larger CM-2000 Case/MediaSeparator; and, like the CV-750, handles just about half thecapacity of the larger unit. Although scaled down in size, these two pieces of equipment are every bit as tough as theirfull-sized counterparts. Situational Awareness: How Being Aware of YourBy Maureen P. SangiorgioAs I stepped into the sandwich shop, I couldn’thelp but notice this young guy standing out front. Itwas around dinnertime, and this place was alwaysbusy at that time, folks picking up dinner on their wayhome from work. I’ve never seen anyone just standingaround; they are always coming and going, and almostalways in a hurry. It was also end of Summer, yet hehad on a thick sweatshirt hoodie, and was wearing thehood up to cover his head. He also had on large, darksunglasses, even though it was early evening. When I came back out of the shop, I walked to mycar, and noticed he was sitting in his car, not eating ordrinking anything. As I pulledaway, I checked my rear-viewmirror, and saw he was rightbehind me. I was going to drivehome, but thought I better not,as I didn’t want him to knowwhere I live. So I drove acrosstown to a nearby Wal-Mart,and, thankfully, didn’t see himanymore.I found out a few days lateron a neighborhood social mediasite that others had noticed thesame guy at the shop, had asimilar scary experience, anddescribed him in exactly thesame manner. Local policewere notified. Turns out he waswatching who used the ATMmachine inside the shop, so hecan follow them and rob the unsuspecting person of cash.Startling StatisticsAccording to the FBI, therewere 1.2 million violent crimescommitted in the United Statesin 2018 (the FBI defines violent crimes as murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault). That boils down toabout 369 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants. And among the various types of violent crime reportedin the United States, aggravated assault (assault witha deadly weapon) is the most common. In 2018, thecrime rate (the number of reported instances per100,000 inhabitants) was 246.8 for aggravated assault.Scared yet? No worries. There is plenty you can doto protect yourself and lower your risk of becoming astatistic. A great first step is to improve your situationalawareness. What is Situational Awareness?According to Gary Quesenberry, author of Spotting8 Blue PressDanger Before It Spots You, situational awareness is theability to identify and process environmental cues toaccurately predict the actions of others. “You can’t fightwhat you don’t see coming,” explains Quesenberry, who is a retired Federal Air Marshall, and has beenfeatured on the History Channel’s “Top Shot” program.“Without situational awareness, you’re always goingto be reactive instead of proactive. So if somethinggoes down in front of you that you are unaware of,your reaction times will be longer because you werenot aware of your surroundings. In a violent situation, not only seconds count, but milliseconds count. Soyou if you want to give yourself the best opportunity tosurvive a violent encounter youhave to have situational awareness in place first.”Action StepsLook in the mirror. The firststep is to look at yourself theway a predator will size youup. Do you have any of thetraits that predators are looking for when they are trying todetermine if you are a soft ora hard target? “People will beconsidered hard targets whenthey appear aware of their surroundings, carry themselveswith confidence, and look likethey could handle themselves ina fight,” says Quesenberry. “Ifyou’re away from your house,in town running errands, alwayskeep your head up, and lookaround often. Don’t look downat your phone, and don’t wearheadphones. That’s a sure wayto cut yourself off from yoursurroundings.”Think, “What if?” Whenever you enter an area, use“what if scenarios” to rehearse your reactions to badsituations. “By imagining various scenarios as we movethrough our environments and visualizing the possibleoutcomes, we better prepare ourselves to act shouldthe need arise,” explains Quesenberry. “Rememberto include solutions that address all three elements ofpersonal safety, which are avoidance, de-escalation,and confrontation. Of those three, avoidance is the bestway to stay safe 100 percent of the time.”Hatch an escape plan. It’s also a good idea to take inyour surroundings when inside a building just in caseyou need to escape quickly or use an item at hand todefend yourself. For example, make a mental note of800-223-4570 dillonprecision.com

Surroundings Just Might Save Your Life One Daywhere the chairs and lamps are, so you can either usethem to defend yourself, or throw one through a window for your escape.Search for the right spot. If it’s nighttime, and youhave to go shopping, or out to dinner, scan the parking lot for light poles. “When you pull into a parkinglot, always try to park under a light, and as closeto the building as possible,” advises Fred Mastison, professional firearms and combatives instructor, andpresident of Force Options USA. “The farther you haveto walk to your car, the longer you are exposed to acriminal.”Learn to “read.” According to Mastison, situationalawareness is learning how toread the environment and people. “How are they carryingthemselves? Are they doingsomething that catches youreye? Look for activity where theperson is actively scanning thearea and their behavior is notcalm. When most people arewalking from their car to thestore, or when exiting a store, they are calm and relaxed. Butwhen you see someone jitteryand nervous or agitated, andtheir eyes are scanning around, that’s a sign.”It’s also a good idea to checkout their hands. Are their handsin their pockets, under theirshirt, or inside their coat whilewalking? “If so, that’s a signthere’s a weapon involved 99percent of the time,” warnsMastison. Also look at theirclothes to see if there is a bumpor bulge showing, and if theyare constantly reaching at their waistline. “If so, theycould be readjusting their firearm. Are they pullingtheir pants up time and time again? The weight of afirearm could be pulling their pants down.”Check your car. A mistake victims have made is tounlock their car from a distance with their keyless remote. “You don’t want to unlock your car until you cansee all the way around it,” says Mastison. “Unlockingit from a distance allows somebody who’s near yourcar to slip in without you even knowing it.” Look underneath the car, and inside the car. When inside, takeyour rearview mirror and dip it down so you can lookinto the back seat. If someone is hiding there, you cansee them. It’s also a good idea to turn the mirror down !before exiting your car, so when you return to your car,you can check the rearview mirror from the outside before getting inside.Another tip: keep a small, extra-bright LED flashlightin your pocket or handbag so you can shine the lightaround, under, and inside your car before opening thedoor. To save time, when exiting a building, place theflashlight in your hand.Talk to your kids. Today, if a child is being bullied atschool, that follows them home because of the manyhours kids spend on electronic devices. “Their tormentors can now harass and upset them electronically, making it almost impossible for them to escape,” notesGary. “It seems easy for us asadults to approach the problemfrom a ‘just turn the phone off’perspective, but that’s not aseasy for someone in their teens.Aside from cyber-bullies, ourchildren also face the threatof online predators, sexual exploitation, catfishing, and bribery, to name a few.”In Gary’s second book,Spotting Danger Before It SpotsYour Kids, he advises parents tospend time with their childrenteaching them about situationalawareness in a fun, engagingway. “A child that’s aware andengaged with what’s happeningaround them has a much betterchance of spotting a potentiallydangerous situation and alertingsomeone to the problem,” saysGary. “This helps to build theirconfidence and gives them amore active role in their personal safety.”Children’s security comes from their ability toobserve their surroundings, identify threatening situations, and communicate those threats to the adultsaround them. “That’s their best defense against danger, and it’s important that we as adults give themthe tools they need to properly develop those skills,”advises Gary. “We accomplish this through simplegames that reinforce memory, spatial awareness, comprehension, analytical thinking, problem-solving, anddecision-making. It’s almost impossible to sit a 6-yearold down and talk openly about the importance ofsituational awareness, but through games we can givethem the foundation they need to build those awareDness skills as they get older.”PWARNING: The products offered for sale in this catalog can expose you to chemicals, including Lead, which are known to the Stateof California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
