About Mary Lou Stout Dempler —Kentucky’s Ukulele Goddessary Lou Stout Dempler began hermusical career at age seven inLouisville, Kentucky where shestudied guitar at the UrsulineSchool of Music and Drama until graduatingAssumption High School. She continuedstudying guitar, music and voice atBellarmine University. She obtained ateaching certification in music and dancefrom the Kahelelani School which isrecognized by the University of Hawaii.In addition to a 23-year teachingcareer, she was the recipient of the 1997Duesquene University Scholarship. In 1998,her husband Shane had a ukulele customdesigned and handmade for her birthday. MaryLou fell in love with its gentle, harp-like sound.In the fall of 1998, she accepted an invitation to attend a Ukulele Seminar at HarvardUniversity in Boston. She is a member of the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum and theNashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI).Her love of the ukulele and desire to share the joy of playing music led her to found theLouisville Ukulele Association Unlimited (LUAU). In an effort to promote a “new ukulelesound” she recorded three albums to showcase the instrument’s versatility.
