About Mary Lou Stout Dempler —Kentucky’s Ukulele Goddessary Lou Stout Dempler began hermusical career at age seven inLouisville, Kentucky where shestudied guitar at the UrsulineSchool of Music and Drama until graduatingAssumption High School. She continuedstudying guitar, music and voice atBellarmine University. She obtained ateaching certification in music and dancefrom the Kahelelani School which isrecognized by the University of Hawaii.In addition to a 23-year teachingcareer, she was the recipient of the 1997Duesquene University Scholarship. In 1998,her husband Shane had a ukulele customdesigned and handmade for her birthday. MaryLou fell in love with its gentle, harp-like sound.In the fall of 1998, she accepted an invitation to attend a Ukulele Seminar at HarvardUniversity in Boston. She is a member of the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum and theNashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI).Her love of the ukulele and desire to share the joy of playing music led her to found theLouisville Ukulele Association Unlimited (LUAU). In an effort to promote a “new ukulelesound” she recorded three albums to showcase the instrument’s versatility. All threealbums are in the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum, along with the “Lou Lou” ukulele madefor and named after Mary Lou.Several books have been written by Mary Lou and published by Mel Bay PublicationsIncorporated. Tuning Your Ukulele Always tune before you play & check tuning regularly, even small temperature changes can make your ukulele go out of tune. The most popular ukulele tuning for soprano, concert and tenor ukes is G, C, E, A. This is the tuning used for all Wigan Ukulele Club material. Baritone Ukuleles tend to be tuned D, G, B, E.
