FACING UP TO THE FLUAs this issue of PDa goes to press, the number of coronavirus casesacross the U.S. is growing, with several deaths already attributed to the disease. No one is quite sure how thevirus will unfold; predictions run the gamut froma larger than usual severe flu outbreak to apandemic on the order of the Spanish Fluthat devasted the country and the worldin the years after World War I.In an age where the world’sknowledge is available at one’sfingertips, there’s almost toomuch information about thecoronavirus going around—rumors and twice-told talesthat spread almost as quickly as the virus, mutatingwith new, not always accurate details or omissionswith every retelling. It’s also a reminderof the lasting power ofworld-of-mouth, the oldest form of advertisingand publicity that is everybit as effective, if not moreso, than the latest digitalchannel. Small wonder thatthere’s a run on respirationmasks, hand disinfectant, andother defense tools at stores acrossthe country. (I’ve yet to hear of similardemand for chicken soup, which I grewup learning was the cure for all ills.)Every wise business owner knows that, like the old sports adage, the best defenseagainst challenges both known and otherwise is agood offense. That means taking thoughtful, measuredsteps to address potential vulnerabilities and adopting habitsthat typically make sense regardless of whether there’s a threat or not.In the case of the coronavirus, for example, medical experts say simple measures such as washing hands and avoiding touching one’s face isan effective way to prevent contracting and spreading germs, includingrelatively benign colds that may not be as debilitating as flu, but can sapproductivity nonetheless. Compare that with scrounging all the respiratory4Professional Demolition Americas Issue 1 Jan-March 2020 www.pdamericas.commasks on the shelf, which, by the way, are typically more beneficialfor those already infected with the flu to prevent spreading itto others, rather than the other way around. You can apply this approach to the daily routines of your business. For example, regularlyprocessing receipts into your accountingsystem every day or two takes only afew minutes, compared with the potentially hours-long reconciliationsessions at deadlines where youmight overlook an expense orwhy it was incurred.Taking the time tomake sure your insuranceis up to date, your computers are fully protected against unwelcomeintruders, and youremployees’ emergencycontact numbers arecurrent will likewiseenhance your readinessin the event of an emergencies or unexpectedevents, which never occurat one’s convenience. The takeaway from allthis is that being proactive isalmost better than having toreact to something, particularlyif it’s a new challenge or situation. But there’s a difference betweenmaking informed decisions and takingwise steps, and taking a so-called “shotgun” approach with limited effectiveness thatdoesn’t merit the cost. For now, let’s all hope the coronavirus threat recedesas quickly as it peaks, that those already infected recover, andthe rest of us avoid any exposure or long-term effects. Be safe, bewary, and be smart.Jim Parsons, Senior Editorjim.parsons@pdamericas.com
