Diamond in a Triangle (DIT) Ruler Set InstructionsYour DIT set can made a wide variety of hexagonal patterns, ranging from 1000 Pyramids and stars insidehexagons to compound star units and Millefiori style quilts. You can use one size to create all these quiltpatterns or you can mix and match different sizes to create stunning and unique patterns. The groovedruler is labeled as finished, but is actually finished 1/2” to include the seam allowance. Each setcontains the following three pieces:Size of grooved ruleris measured alongeach flat side fromcorner to corner.Center DiamondCutting Template(oversized)DIT Grooved Ruler(exact size)Side TriangleCutting Template(oversized)Prepare your Ruler and TemplatesCut small, 1/2” or smaller size squares from the roll of Traction Tape and peel the tape away from thepaper backing. Apply as closely as you can to each corner of the cutting templates. The tape should not be applied to the groove side of the ruler because it will interfere with the functioningof the ruler but if you apply the tape to the flat side only, you can use your grooved ruler to cut shapesthat will make 1000 Pyramids designs and spacer units between hexagon stars.Be sure to place the Traction Tapeonto the flat side of the ruler.1

How to Cut Out the Template ShapesCut the strip widths based on the ruler size and place the templates onto the strips as shown below.Right Handed CuttingPlace the template grainline parallel to the cut edge of the fabric strip.FoldCut around the template and then rotate the template to make the next cut.Place one of the template grainline parallel to the cut edge of the fabric strip.FoldCut around the template and then move it forward to make the nextcut.Place the grooved ruler side (flat side touching fabric) parallel to the cut edge of the fabric strip.FoldCut around the grooved ruler and then rotate the template to make the next cut.2

How to Sew the Units Together*1. In front of your sewing machine, place one center diamond shape in the middle, between the pair ofside triangles with all three pieces right side up.Match at this cornerStitch 1/4” wide seamallowance from cornerto corner.2. Flip the blue side triangle on top of the center diamond shape, matching at the corner and both piecesmust be right sides together. Stitch 1/4” seam along the edge.*It’s extremely important to always sew the units together in the same way because the order you sew theunits determines the pressing sequence for your entire quilt project. Once you start building the unitsabove, they must always be made the same way.4

3. Press the seam toward the side triangle.Notice that the side triangle extends past thecenter diamond shape along the bottom edge. This is normal.4. Clip off the little triangle at the lower left edge.5. Reposition the pieces once more, this timewith the remaining side triangle on the left.6. Stitch 1/4” seam along the edge from cornerto corner.Flip the sewn unit on top of the side triangle, matching at the corner of the center diamondshape.5

BeGentle!View from the wrong side7. Gently finger press (NO IRON) the seamallowance to the side triangle.DIT8. Place the unit onto a rotary mat and lock the grooves from your Bloc Loc Diamond in a Triangle ontoboth seams. Make sure there are no gaps in either groove.Trim all the way around the ruler. Be sure to trim the smaller corners and around the tip because theseare useful for matching units together into stars. You are not finished just yet. Turn the page to see thefinal step for perfect diamond in a triangle units!6

The Final Step is Crucial! The last side triangle that you added to your unit must now be pressed to the center diamond and becauseyou finger pressed it so that it could be trimmed using your Bloc Loc, it can now be re-pressed to thecenter. If you had used your iron, re-pressing would not be possible. This step will set up your project sothat all the pieces fit together with seams interlocked and going in opposite directions.Right side viewWrong side viewLast Side Triangle addedLast Side Triangle addedRe-press your last side triangle added back to the center diamond shape. You can use your fingers topush it back to the center (from the wrong side) and then hold the iron on top for a few seconds to holdit in place. It also helps to turn the unit over and press it again on the right side. You’re now ready to sewyour units together into star hexagon block.7

The triangle has three acute angles that are not all equal. It is an acute triangle. 62/87,21 One angle of the triangle measures 90, so it is a right angle. Since the triangle has a right angle, it is a right triangle. 62/87,21 Since all the angles are congruent, it is a equiangular triangle. 62/87,21 The triangle

Glencoe/McGraw-Hill 184 Glencoe Geometry Classify Triangles by Sides You can classify a triangle by the measures of its sides. Equal numbers of hash marks indicate congruent sides. If all three sides of a triangle are congruent, then the triangle is an equilateral triangle. If at least two sides of a triangle are congruent, then the triangle is an isosceles triangle.
