The City of Calgary Community Profiles13Part A – DemographicsNotesEach item in this document starts from aparticular population. Some items relate tothe total population and some to a subset. For example, the “Number of Persons byAge and Sex” table refers to the totalpopulation whereas the “LivingArrangements” table refers only to thepopulation in private households. Therelationship between the populations isillustrated (right) and terms related to thedifferent populations can be found in theglossary.Throughout this document, the populationis identified and the full population figureis provided as the first row of the relatedtable.Populations (adapted from Statistics Canada 2011In both the original data from StatisticsCensus Dictionary, 98-301-X2011001)Canada and in the compilation of thisdocument, total values may not match theindividual values since totals and sub-totals are independently rounded. Similarly, percentages, which are calculated on rounded data, may not necessarily add up to 100%.Data QualityTwo data sources were used to compile the Part A - Demographics community profiles: the2014 Calgary Civic Census and the 2011 Census of Canada. The data quality of each source isdiscussed below.2014 Calgary Civic CensusCalgary conducts an annual official count of dwelling units and population that lives in thoseunits through door to door physical collection. This count of dwellings and residents may alsoinclude enumeration and other supplementary questions. The 2014 Calgary Civic Census daywas April 1.2011 Census of CanadaA different methodology was used for the 2011 Census of Canada than in previous years. Priorto 2011, the Census consisted of a mandatory short- and long-form questionnaire. In 2011, theCensus of Canada was collected through only a mandatory short-form census questionnaire.Information previously collected in the mandatory long-form census was collected in 2011through the voluntary National Household Survey (NHS). The results of the Census of CanadaOnward/ By 2036, 75 percent of Calgarians will report that they are informed.

The City of Calgary Community Profiles14Part A – Demographicsare highly reliable but this change in methodology has implications for the type and quality ofinformation available through the NHS. These implications will be discussed in Part B –Community Character profile. The 2011 Census of Canada reference day was May 10.Data sources summaryCalgary Civic CensusCensus of CanadaNational Household SurveyFrequencyCurrent yearAnnual2014Every five years2011Initial collection2011AdministratorThe City of CalgaryStatistics CanadaStatistics CanadaCurrent year datacollectedStandard questions: Population Number and type ofdwellingsAdditional questions: Age and sex (every2-3 years) Transportationsurvey (every 5years) Mode oftransportation(every 3 years) Dogs and cats(occasional) Number ofemployed (every 5years)YesShort-form fields: Population Number and type ofdwellings Basic demographics(including age, andsex) Marital status Language Families andhouseholdsNHS fields: Activity limitations Ethnic diversity andimmigration Aboriginal Peoples Mobility and migration Education Labour, place of work andcommuting to work Income and earnings Housing and shelter costsYesNoNoNoYesNot collected incurrent yearIncluded in Part A– Demographics?Included in Part B– CommunityCharacter? In 2011, the short-form questionnaire remained mandatory and contained the same eightquestions as in previous years, with the addition of two language questions. As such it ispossible to make historical comparisons between most variables from the 2011 Census andprevious short-form census data. However, there are some restrictions when makingcomparisons: The definitions of specific variables can change over time and should be reviewed.Statistics Canada advises caution when comparing the 2011 Census language data withthat of previous Censuses because changes in response patterns to mother tongue andhome language have been observed. These changes may be related to modifications madein the placement and context of these questions in the survey.Onward/ By 2036, 75 percent of Calgarians will report that they are informed.

The City of Calgary Community Profiles15Part A – Demographics In some cases major changes to a geographical boundary (for example 2006 and 2013Ward boundaries) may mean that direct comparisons over time are not possible. This is alsotrue for the Calgary Civic Census. The diagram below shows an overview of the changes to the Census of Canada and links eachdataset with the associated community profile.Census of Canada changesSourcesCommunity Profile: Part A – Demographics SourcesNameCalgary CivicCensusCensus ofCanadaCensus ofCanadaYear201420112011AdministratorThe City 4 Civic Census ResultsSemi-Custom Profile, for Custom Geography (Cluster1), 2011 CensusCensus Profile – Age, Sex, Marital Status, Families,Households, Dwellings and Language for Canada,Provinces, Territories, Census Divisions and CensusSubdivisions, 2011 Census.Onward/ By 2036, 75 percent of Calgarians will report that they are informed.
