INTRODUCTIONDear Customer,Symbols on the machine:Congratulations on your choice to buy a Husqvarnaproduct! Husqvarna is based on a tradition that dates backto 1689, when the Swedish King Karl XI ordered theconstruction of a factory on the banks of the HusqvarnaRiver, for production of muskets. The location was logical, since water power was harnessed from the HuskvarnaRiver to create the water-powered plant. During the morethan 300 years of beeing, the Husqvarna factory hasproduced a lot of different products, from wood stoves tomodern kitchen appliances, sewing machines, bicycles, motorcycles etc. In 1956, the first motor driven lawnmowers appeared, followed by chain saws in 1959, and itis within this area Husqvarna is working today.WARNING! Chain saws can bedangerous! Careless or incorrect usecan result in serious or fatal injury tothe operator or others.Today Husqvarna is one of the leading manufacturers inthe world of forest and garden products, with quality as ourhighest priority. The business concept is to develop, manufacture and market motor driven products for forestryand gardening as well as for building and constructionindustry. Visit your dealerregularly to see whether you can benefit from new featuresthat have been introduced.Personal protective equipment!WARNING! Most chain saw accidentshappen when the chain touches theoperator. You must use approvedpersonal protective equipment wheneveryou use the machine. Personalprotective equipment cannot eliminatethe risk of injury but it will reduce thedegree of injury if an accident doeshappen. Ask your dealer for help inchoosing the right equipment. Approved protective helmet Hearing protection Protective goggles or a visor Gloves with saw protection Trousers with saw protection Boots with saw protection, steel toe-cap and non-slipsole Always have a first aid kit nearby. Fire Extinguisher and ShovelGenerally clothes should be close-fitting without restrictingyour freedom of movement.IMPORTANT! Sparks can come from the muffler, thebar and chain or other sources. Always have fireextinguishing tools available if you should need them.Help prevent forest fires.Machine′s safety equipmentIn this section the machine’s safety features and theirfunction are explained. For inspection and maintenancesee instructions under the heading Checking, maintainingand servicing chain saw safety equipment. Seeinstructions under the heading, What is what?, to findwhere these parts are located on your machine. The life span of the machine can be reduced and the riskof accidents can increase if machine maintenance is notcarried out correctly and if service and/or repairs are notcarried out professionally. If you need further informationplease contact your nearest service workshop.!WARNING! Never use a machine withdefective safety components. Safetyequipment must be inspected andmaintained. See instructions under theheading Checking, maintaining andservicing chain saw safety equipment. Ifyour machine does not pass all thechecks, take the saw to a servicingdealer for repair.Chain brake and front hand guardYour chain saw is equipped with a chain brake that isdesigned to stop the chain if you get a kickback. The chain1153134-26 Rev. 3 2010-02-11brake reduces the risk of accidents, but only you canprevent them.Take care when using your saw and make sure thekickback zone of the bar never touches any object. The chain brake (A) can either be activated manually(by your left hand) or automatically by the inertia releasemechanism.(3) The brake is applied when the front hand guard (B) ispushed forwards. (3) This movement activates a spring-loaded mechanismthat tightens the brake band (C) around the engine drivesystem (D) (clutch drum). (4) The front hand guard is not designed solely to activatethe chain brake. Another important feature is that itreduces the risk of your left hand hitting the chain if youlose grip of the front handle. The chain brake must be engaged when the chain sawis started to prevent the saw chain from rotating. Use the chain brake as a ”parking brake” when startingand when moving over short distances, to reduce therisk of moving chain accidentally hitting your leg oranyone or anything close by. To release the chain brake pull the front hand guardbackwards, towards the front handle. Kickback can be very sudden and violent. Mostkickbacks are minor and do not always activate thechain brake. If this happens you should hold the chainsaw firmly and not let go. The way the chain brake is activated, either manually orautomatically by the inertia release mechanism, depends on the force of the kickback and the position ofthe chain saw in relation to the object that the kickbackzone of the bar strikes. If you get a violent kickback while the kickback zone ofthe bar is farthest away from you the chain brake isdesigned to be activated by the inertia in the kickbackdirection. If the kickback is less violent or the kickback zone of thebar is closer to you the chain brake will be activatedmanually by the movement of your left hand. In the felling position the left hand is in a position thatmakes manual activation of the chain brake impossible. With this type of grip, that is when the left hand is placedso that it cannot affect the movement of the front handguard, the chain brake can only be activated by theinertia action. Will my hand always activate the chainbrake during a kickback? No. It takes a certain force to move the hand guard forward. If your hand only lightly touches the front guard or slipsover it, the force may not be enough to trigger the chainbrake. You should also maintain a firm grip of the chain sawhandles while working. If you do and experience akickback, your hand may never leave the front handle andwill not activate the chain brake, or the chain brake will onlyactivate after the saw has swung around a considerabledistance. In such instances, the chain brake might not haveenough time to stop the saw chain before it touches you. There are also certain positions in which your hand cannotreach the front hand guard to activate the chain brake; forexample, when the saw chain is held in felling position.English – 9

GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONSWill my inertia activated chain brakealways activate during kickback in theevent of a kickback? No. First your brake must be in working order. Testing thebrake is simple, see instructions under the headingChecking, maintaining and servicing chain saw safetyequipment. We recommend you do before you begin eachwork session. Second the kickback must be strong enoughto activate the chain brake. If the chain brake is toosensitive it would activate all the time which would be anuisance.with cutting equipment that is blunt or faulty (wrong type orbadly sharpened) will increase the vibration level.!Will my chain brake always protect mefrom injury in the event of a kickback? No. First, the chain brake must be in working order toprovide the intended protection. Second, it must beactivated during the kickback as described above to stopthe saw chain. Third, the chain brake may be activated butif the bar is too close to you the brake might not haveenough time to slow down and stop the chain before thechain saw hits you.Only you and proper working technique can eliminatekickback and its danger.Throttle lockoutThe throttle lockout is designed to prevent accidentaloperation of the throttle control. When you press the lock(A) (i.e. when you grasp the handle) it releases the throttlecontrol (B). When you release the handle the throttlecontrol and the throttle lockout both move back to theiroriginal positions. This arrangement means that the throttlecontrol is automatically locked at the idle setting. (5)WARNING! Overexposure to vibrationcan lead to circulatory damage or nervedamage in people who have impairedcirculation. Contact your doctor if youexperience symptoms of overexposureto vibration. Such symptoms includenumbness, loss of feeling, tingling, pricking, pain, loss of strength, changesin skin colour or condition. Thesesymptoms normally appear in thefingers, hands or wrists. Thesesymptoms may be increased in coldtemperatures.Stop switchUse the stop switch to switch off the engine.MufflerThe muffler is designed to reduce noise levels and to directexhaust fumes away from the user.!WARNING! The exhaust fumes from theengine are hot and may contain sparkswhich can start a fire. Never start themachine indoors or near combustiblematerial! In areas with a hot, dry climate there is a high risk of fires. These areas are sometimes subject to government rulesrequiring among other things the muffler must be equippedwith an approved type of spark arrestor mesh (A). (6)Chain catcherThe chain catcher is designed to catch the chain if it snapsor jumps off. This should not happen if the chain is properlytensioned (see instructions under the heading Assembly)and if the bar and chain are properly serviced andmaintained (see instructions under the heading Generalworking instructions).Right hand guardApart from protecting your hand if the chain jumps orsnaps, the right hand guard stops branches and twigs frominterfering with your grip on the rear handle.Vibration damping systemYour machine is equipped with a vibration damping systemthat is designed to minimize vibration and make operationeasier. The machine′s vibration damping system reduces thetransfer of vibration between the engine unit/cuttingequipment and the machine′s handle unit. The body of thechain saw, including the cutting equipment, is insulatedfrom the handles by vibration damping units.Cutting hardwoods (most broadleaf trees) creates morevibration than cutting softwoods (most conifers). CuttingCAUTION! The muffler gets very hot during and afteruse. This also applies during idling. Be aware of the firehazard, especially when working near flammablesubstances and/or vapours.!WARNING! Never use a saw without amuffler, or with a damaged muffler. Adamaged muffler may substantiallyincrease the noise level and the firehazard. Keep fire fighting equipmenthandy. If a spark arrestor screen isrequired in your area, never use the sawwithout or with a broken spark arrestorscreen.Cutting equipmentThis section describes how to choose and maintain yourcutting equipment in order to: Reduce the risk of kickback. Reduce the risk of the saw chain breaking or jumping offthe bar. Obtain optimal cutting performance. Extend the life of cutting equipment. Avoid increasing vibration levels.10 – English1153134-26 Rev. 3 2010-02-11

GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONSGeneral rules Only use cutting equipment recommended by us!See instructions under the heading Technical data. Keep the chain’s cutting teeth properly sharpened!Follow our instructions and use the recommendedfile gauge. A damaged or badly sharpened chainincreases the risk of accidents. Maintain the correct depth gauge setting! Followour instructions and use the recommended depthgauge clearance. Too large a clearance increases therisk of kickback. Keep the chain properly tensioned! If the chain isslack it is more likely to jump off and lead to increasedwear on the bar, chain and drive sprocket. Keep cutting equipment well lubricated andproperly maintained! A poorly lubricated chain ismore likely to break and lead to increased wear on thebar, chain and drive sprocket.Cutting equipment designed to reducekickback!WARNING! Faulty cutting equipment orthe wrong combination of bar and sawchain increases the risk of kickback!Only use the bar/saw chaincombinations we recommend, andfollow the filing instructions. Seeinstructions under the heading Technicaldata. The only way to avoid kickback is to make sure that thekickback zone of the bar never touches anything.By using cutting equipment with ”built-in” kickbackreduction and keeping the chain sharp and wellmaintained you can reduce the effects of kickback.BarThe smaller the tip radius the lower the chance of kickback.ChainA chain is made up of a number of links, which areavailable in standard and low-kickback versions.IMPORTANT! No saw chain design eliminates thedanger of kickback.!WARNING! Any contact with a rotatingsaw chain can cause extremely seriousinjuries. Some terms that describe the bar and chainTo maintain the safety features of the cutting equipment, you should replace a worn or damaged bar or chain with abar and chain combinations recommended by Husqvarna.See instructions under the heading Technical Data for a listof replacement bar and chain combinations werecommend.Bar Length (inches/cm) Number of teeth on bar tip sprocket (T).1153134-26 Rev. 3 2010-02-11 Chain pitch (inches). The spacing between the drivelinks of the chain must match the spacing of the teeth onthe bar tip sprocket and drive sprocket. Number of drivelinks. The number of drive links is determined by thelength of the bar, the chain pitch and the number of teethon the bar tip sprocket. Bar groove width (inches/mm). The groove in the barmust match the width of the chain drive links. Chain oil hole and hole for chain tensioner. The bar mustbe matched to the chain saw design.Chain Chain pitch (inches) Drive link width (mm/inches) Number of drive links.Sharpening your chain and adjustingdepth gauge setting!WARNING! Always wear gloves, whenworking with the chain, in order toprotect your hands from injury.General information on sharpening cutting teeth Never use a blunt chain. When the chain is blunt youhave to exert more pressure to force the bar through thewood and the chips will be very small. If the chain is veryblunt it will produce wood powder and no chips orshavings. A sharp chain eats its way through the wood andproduces long, thick chips or shavings. The cutting part of the chain is called the cutter andconsists of a cutting tooth (A) and the depth gauge (B).The cutters cutting depth is determined by thedifference in height between the two (depth gaugesetting). (7)When you sharpen a cutting tooth there are four importantfactors to remember.1 Filing angle2 Cutting angle3 File position4 Round file diameterIt is very difficult to sharpen a chain correctly without theright equipment. We recommend that you use our filegauge. This will help you obtain the maximum kickbackreduction and cutting performance from your chain.See instructions under the heading Technical data forinformation about sharpening your chain.!WARNING! Departure from thesharpening instructions considerablyincreases the risk of kickback.Sharpening cutting teethTo sharpen cutting teeth you will need a round file and a filegauge. See instructions under the heading Technical datafor information on the size of file and gauge that arerecommended for the chain fitted to your chain saw. Check that the chain is correctly tensioned. A slackchain will move sideways, making it more difficult tosharpen correctly. Always file cutting teeth from the inside face. Reducethe pressure on the return stroke. File all the teeth onone side first, then turn the chain saw over and file theteeth on the other side.English – 11

GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS File all the teeth to the same length. When the length ofthe cutting teeth is reduced to 4 mm (0.16") the chain isworn out and should be replaced. (8)General advice on adjusting depth gauge setting When you sharpen the cutting tooth (A) the depth gaugesetting (C) will decrease. To maintain optimal cuttingperformance the depth gauge (B) has to be filed downto achieve the recommended depth gauge setting. Seeinstructions under the heading Technical data to find thecorrect depth gauge setting for your particular chain.!WARNING! The risk of kickback isincreased if the depth gauge setting istoo large!Adjustment of depth gauge setting The cutting teeth should be newly sharpened beforeadjusting the depth gauge setting. We recommend thatyou adjust the depth gauge setting every third time yousharpen the cutting teeth. NOTE! This recommendationassumes that the length of the cutting teeth is notreduced excessively. You will need a flat file and a depth gauge tool. Werecommend that you use our depth gauge tool toacheive the correct depth gauge setting and bevel forthe depth gauge. Place the depth gauge tool over the chain. Detailedinformation regarding the use of the depth gauge tool, will be found on the package for the depth gauge tool.Use the flat file to file off the tip of the depth gauge thatprotrudes through the depth gauge tool. The depthgauge setting is correct when you no longer feelresistance as you draw the file along the depth gaugetool.combination spanner. Tighten the chain until it does notsag from the underside of the bar. (11) Use the combination spanner to tighten the bar nutswhile lifting the tip of the bar at the same time. Checkthat you can pull the chain round freely by hand and thatit does not sag from the underside of the bar. (12)Lubricating cutting equipment!WARNING! Poor lubrication of cuttingequipment may cause the chain to snap, which could lead to serious, even fatalinjuries.Chain oilChain oil must demonstrate good adhesion to the chainand also maintain its flow characteristics regardless ofwhether it is warm summer or cold winter weather. As a chain saw manufacturer we have developed anoptimal chain oil which, with its vegetable oil base, is alsobiodegradable. We recommend the use of our own oil forboth maximum chain life and to minimise environmentaldamage. If our own chain oil is not available, standardchain oil is recommended.Never use waste oil! Using waste oil can be dangerousto you and damage the machine and environment.IMPORTANT! When using vegetable based saw chainoil, dismantle and clean the groove in the bar and sawchain before long-term storage. Otherwise there is arisk of the saw chain oil oxidizing, which will result in thesaw chain becoming stiff and the bar tip sprocketjamming.Filling with chain oilTensioning the chain!!WARNING! A slack chain may jump offand cause serious or even fatal injury.WARNING! Always wear approvedprotective gloves. Even a non-movingchain can cause serious cuts to yourselfor persons you bump into with anexposed chain. The more you use a chain the longer it becomes. It istherefore important to adjust the chain regularly to take upthe slack.Check the chain tension every time you refuel. NOTE! Anew chain has a running-in period during which you shouldcheck the tension more frequently.Tension the chain as tightly as possible, but not so tight thatyou cannot pull it round freely by hand. (9) All our chain saws have an automatic chain lubricationsystem. On some models the oil flow is also adjustable. The saw chain oil tank and the fuel tank are designed sothat the fuel runs out before the saw chain oil. However, this safety feature requires that you use theright sort of chain oil (if the oil is too thin it will run outbefore the fuel), and that you adjust the carburetor asrecommended (a lean mixture may mean that the fuellasts longer than the oil) and that you also use therecommended cutting equipment (a bar that is too longwill use more chain oil).Checking chain lubrication Check the chain lubrication each time you refuel. Seeinstructions under the heading Lubricating the bar tipsprocket.Aim the tip of the bar at a light coloured surface about20 cm (8 inches) away. After 1 minute running at 3/4throttle you should see a distinct line of oil on the lightsurface. Undo the bar nuts that hold the clutch cover/chainbrake. Use the combination spanner. Then tighten thebar nuts by hand as tight as you can. (10)If the chain lubrication is
