Safety InstructionsKeep away from direct sunlight and away from chemicals. Make sure the environment does notexperience abrupt changes in temperature or humidity.Do not place the Synology product close to any liquid.Before cleaning, unplug the power cord first. Wipe Synology product with damp paper towels. Donot use chemical or aerosol cleaners to clean it.Do not place the Synology product on a cart, table, or desk, which is not stable to avoid theproduct from falling over.The power cord must plug in to the right supply voltage. Make sure that the supplied AC voltageis correct and stable.To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnectedfrom the power source.5Chapter 1: Before You Start

ChapterChapter 2:Hardware SetupTools and Parts for Hard Disk Installation A screwdriver At least one 3.5” or 2.5” SATA hard disk(Please visit www.synology.com for compatible hard disk models.)Warning: If you install a hard disk that contains data, the system will format the hard disk and erase all data. If youneed the data in the future, please back it up before installation.Install Hard Disks1 Push the upper case in the direction as shown below. Lift the upper case and set it aside.2 Install the hard disk: For 3.5" Hard Disk: Slide the hard disk into the hard drive bay, and push it all the way until it is connectedto the SATA connector. Secure the hard disk with the provided screws. For 2.5" Hard Disk:a Place the hard disk in the 2.5" Disk Holder (Type C, sold separately), and then tighten the 2.5" screws tosecure the hard disk.62

b Slide the 2.5" Disk Holder into the hard drive bay, and push it all the way until the hard disk is connectedto the SATA connector. Secure the Disk Holder with the provided screws.3 Repeat the steps above to assemble the other hard disk you have prepared.4 The disks' positions are numbered as shown below.Note: If you want to set up a RAID set, it is recommended that all installed hard disks are of the same size to makethe best use of hard disk capacity.5 Replace the upper case, and tighten the screws on the back panel.7Chapter 2: Hardware Setup

Start up your DiskStation1 Connect the AC adapter to the power port of DiskStation. Connect one end of the AC power cord to the ACpower adapter, and the other to the power outlet.2 Use the LAN cable to connect DiskStation to your switch/router/hub.3 Press and hold the power button to turn on your DiskStation.Your DiskStation is now online and detectable from a network computer.8Chapter 2: Hardware Setup

ChapterChapter 3:3Install DSM on DiskStationOn a network computer, follow the steps in this chapter to install DSM on your DiskStation. After DSM is installed,you can manage all features of your DiskStation by logging in to DSM with a web browser.Install from Windows1 Insert the installation disc into your computer, and click Start. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete thesetup process.2 Synology Assistant will be installed and launched on your computer. It will search and find your DiskStationwithin LAN, and the status of your DiskStation should be Not Installed. Double-click your DiskStation to startthe setup process.DiskStation93.2-1922DS212jA5GA

3 Click Browse to locate the DSM [model name] [number].pat installation file in the DSM folder of yourinstallation disc. You can also download the latest version of DSM from Synology Download Center.D:\DSM\DSM DS212j 3.2-1922.pat4 Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup process.After the installation process is finished, you can manage your DiskStation with Synology DiskStation Manager(DSM). For more information about managing your DiskStation with DSM, refer to Synology DiskStation User’sGuide available at Synology Download Center.10Chapter 3: Install DSM on DiskStation

Install from Mac OS X1 Insert the installation disc into your computer, and then double-click the SynologyInstall icon on the desktop.2 In the window that appears, double-click the MacOSX folder, and then double-click Synology Assistant[number].dmg.3.2-19223 Double-click the Synology Assistant.app in the window that appears.4 Follow step 2 to 4 of the “Install from Windows” section to finish setup.Install from LinuxThe Linux version is optimized for Ubuntu distribution version 8 and 9. You can still try installation on other Linuxdistributions (for evaluation purpose only).Install and Run Synology AssistantYou can install and run Synology Assistant using the command lines or the GUI.If you want to install using the command lines:Run the script install.sh in the Linux folder of the installation disc, which will guide you through the steps below.1 Remove the beta version of Synology Assistant (if any).sudo rm -rf /usr/local/Synology /usr/local/bin/SynologyAssistant2 Extract SynologyAssistant-[number].tar.gz to the directory you want, such as “/usr/local” or “.”tar -C ./ -zxvf SynologyAssistant-[number].tar.gz3 If you are using 64bit Ubuntu, install the 32bit libraries.sudo apt-get install ia32-libs4 Create the shortcut to /usr/local/bin.sudo ln -sf /path/install/SynologyAssistant/SynologyAssistant \/usr/local/bin/SynologyAssistant11Chapter 3: Install DSM on DiskStation

Unless expressly prohibitedby local law, this EULA is governed by the laws of the Stateof Washington, U.S.A. without regard to any conflict of lawprinciples to the contrary. The 1980 U.N. Convention onContracts for the International Sale of Goods or anysuccessor thereto does not apply.Section 19. Dispute Resolution. Any dispute, controversyor claim arising out of or relating to this Warranty, theSoftware or services provided by Synology with respect tothe Software or the relationship between you and Synologywill be resolved exclusively and finally by arbitration underthe current commercial rules of the American ArbitrationAssociation if you reside in the United States, except asotherwise provided below. In such cases, the arbitration willbe conducted before a single arbitrator, and will be limitedsolely to the dispute between you and Synology. Thearbitration, or any portion of it, will not be consolidated withany other arbitration and will not be conducted on a classwide or class action basis. The arbitration shall be held inKing County, Washington, U.S.A. by submission ofdocuments, by telephone, online or in person as determinedby the arbitrator at the request of the parties. The prevailingparty in any arbitration or legal action occurring within theUnited States or otherwise shall receive all costs andreasonable attorneys’ fees, including any arbitration fee paidby the prevailing party. Any decision rendered in sucharbitration proceedings will be final and binding on theparties, and judgment may be entered thereon in any courtof competent jurisdiction. You understand that, in theabsence of this provision, you would have had a right tolitigate any such dispute, controversy or claim in a court,including the right to litigate claims on a class-wide or classaction basis, and you expressly and knowingly waives thoserights and agrees to resolve any disputes through bindingarbitration in accordance with the provisions of thisSection 19. If you do not reside within the United States,any dispute, controversy or claim described in this Sectionshall be finally resolved by arbitration conducted by threeneutral arbitrators in accordance with the procedures of theR.O.C. Arbitration Law and related enforcement rules. The arbitrationaward shall be final and binding on the parties and may beenforced in any court having jurisdiction. Nothing in thisSection shall be deemed to prohibit or restrict Synology fromseeking injunctive relief or seeking such other rights andremedies as it may have at law or equity for any actual orthreatened breach of any provision of this EULA relating toSynology's intellectual property rights.Section 20. Attorneys' Fees. In any arbitration, mediation,or other legal action or proceeding to enforce rights orremedies under this EULA, the prevailing party will beentitled to recover, in addition to any other relief to which itmay be entitled, costs and reasonable attorneys' fees.Section 21. Severability. If any provision of this EULA isheld by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal,or unenforceable, the remainder of this EULA will remain infull force and effect.Section 22. Entire Agreement. This EULA sets forth theentire agreement of Synology and you with respect to theSoftware and the subject matter hereof and supersedes allprior and contemporaneous understandings and agreementswhether written or oral. No amendment, modification orwaiver of any of the provisions of this EULA will be validunless set forth in a written instrument signed by the party tobe bound thereby.

(g) "Software" means theSynology proprietary software that accompanies the Productwhen purchased by Customer, is downloaded by Customerat the Web Site, or is pre-installed on the Product bySynology, and includes any firmware, associated media,images, animations, video, audio, text and appletsincorporated into the software or Product and any updates orupgrades to such software. (h) "Warranty Period" means:(i) the period commencing on the date the Product ispurchased by Customer and ending (1) five years after suchdate for Category I Products; (2) three years after such datefor Category II Products; or (3) two years after such date forCategory III Products; or (4) one year after such date forCategory IV Products. (i) "Web Site" means the Synologyweb site located at www.synology.com.Section 2. Limited Warranty and Remedies2.1Limited Warranty. Subject to Section 2.7, Synologywarrants to Customer that each Product (a) will be free ofmaterial defects in workmanship and (b) under normal usewill perform substantially in accordance with Synology'spublished specifications for the Product during the WarrantyPeriod. Synology warrants the Software as set forth in theaccompanying end user license agreement provided with theProduct, if any.2.2Product Registration.Customers may registerProducts with Synology and may obtain the manufacturingdate for Category I Products, Category II Products andCategory III Products at the Web Site. The failure to registera Product at the Web Site will not diminish the warrantyrights set forth in Section 2.1. Synology is not responsiblefor Customer's failure to identify the manufacturing date ofany Product.2.3Exclusive Remedy. If Customer gives notice ofnoncompliance with any of the warranties set forth inSection 2.1 within the applicable Warranty Period in themanner set forth below, then, upon verification of thenoncompliance by Synology, Synology will, at Synology'soption: (a) use commercially reasonable efforts to repair theProduct, or (b) replace the noncomplying Product or partthereof upon return of the complete Product in accordancewith Section 2.4 The foregoing sets forth Synology's entireliability and Customer's sole and exclusive remedy for anybreach of warranty under Section 2.1 or any other defect ordeficiency in the Product. Customer will reasonably assistSynology to diagnose and validate any nonconformity withthe Product. The warranty set forth in Section 2.1 does notinclude: (1) any warranty relating to the Software;(2) physical installation or removal of the Product fromCustomer's site; (3) visits to Customer's site; (4) labornecessary to effect repairs or replace defective parts otherthan during Synology's or its contracted service providers'normal local business hours, exclusive of weekends andservice providers’ holidays; (5) any work with any third partyequipment or software; (6) any warranty of the hard disk ifinstalled by Customer or any other third party; or (7) anywarranty of compatibility with the hard disk.2.4Return. Any Product returned by Customer underSection 2.3 must be assigned a Return MerchandiseAuthorization ("RMA") number by Synology before shipmentand must be returned in accordance with Synology's thencurrent RMA procedures.Customer may contact anyauthorized Synology distributor or reseller or SynologySupport to obtain assistance in obtaining an RMA, and mustprovide proof of purchase and product serial number whenasking for such assistance. For warranty claims, Customermust return the complete Product to Synology in accordancewith this Section 2.4 to be eligible for coverage under thisWarranty.
