Read Me First Before using RUBY XL HD for the first time, you must charge its battery. Afull charge takes approximately three hours.Refer to Charging RUBY XL HD on page 11 for battery chargingprocedures.Refer to Battery LED Descriptions on page 13 for battery statusdescriptions. For the basics to help you get started using RUBY XL HD, read QuickStart on page 8. For an overview of RUBY XL HD and its operation, review the information inthis guide first.1

OverviewThank you for purchasing RUBY XL HD.RUBY XL HD is a portable, handheld video magnifier that can magnify an objectfrom two to 14 times its size. It has a 5-megapixel, auto-focus camera thatprovides sharp HD quality images that are easily viewed on its full color, 5-inchLCD screen. RUBY XL HD supports five default color modes, and 15 additionalcontrasting color modes that can easily be enabled.The unit has both an integrated fold-away handle and a reading stand. Thehandle allows you to hold the magnifier close to an object, press themagnification buttons for continuous zoom from 2x to 14x, and then freeze theimage on the screen. If you like, you can then make any necessary magnificationadjustments. This is ideal for viewing clothing labels, prescription labels, pricetags, receipts, business cards, and more.2

With the reading stand open, you can place the unit directly on a document andread printed text or images in magazines, catalogs, menus, photographs, andother printed material.3

RUBY XL HD can save and store up to 80 images that can easily be copied to acomputer through a simple USB connection.The unit also has a reading line and reading mask feature that you can turn onand use to quickly locate and maintain your place while viewing an image orreading text on the LCD screen.4

Quick StartBelow are steps to quickly set up and use RUBY XL HD for the first time.1. Make sure the unit is fully charged. Refer to page 11.2. Turn the unit on by pressing the green/yellow button. Refer to page14.3. Do one of the following.8 Rotate and extend the handle to hold and use the unit like amagnifying glass. This is useful when it’s necessary to magnify andread objects such as labels or details on cans, packages, pill bottles,and more. Refer to page 15. Open the reading stand to place the unit on a flat document such asa newspaper or magazine, a bill or receipt, a letter, and so on. Referto page 16.

4. Adjust the magnification using the yellow buttons (or). Refer topage 19.5. Select a color mode (or ) for contrasting colors that best suit yourvision needs. Refer to page 20.6. Freeze the imageon the LCD screen so that you may take yourtime reading details in the image. Refer to page 26.7. Save the image or return to live view. Refer to page 31.Once you become comfortable using RUBY XL HD, try the following advancedfeatures. Turn the LED reading lights on or off to adjust for glare and reflectionswhen viewing photographs or glossy magazine pages. Refer to page27.9

Use the reading line or reading masks to help you maintain your placewhile reading text. Refer to page 28. Save, view, and delete images stored on the unit as described on pages31 through 34. For additional storage, transfer images from the unit to your computeras described on page 36.10

Charging RUBY XL HDNote: You must use the supplied power adapter to charge the unit. It cannot becharged using the computer’s USB port.1. Plug one end of the power adapter into the unit and the other end into awall outlet (1).2. The battery indicator LED blinks green to show that the battery ischarging (2).11

3. The LED stops blinking and glows a steady green once the battery ischarged. Unplug the power adapter from the unit. The battery indicatorLED turns off.4. You can now use RUBY XL HD for approximately three hours ofcontinuous use. When the battery is low, the battery indicator LEDflashes red. Connect the power adapter and plug it in to recharge thebattery.12

Button DescriptionsPower (Green/Yellow): Press to turn power on. Press it again toturn power off.Magnification (Yellow): Press and HOLD for continuous zoommagnification with live images. When viewing frozen images, pressand release to incrementally increase or decrease magnification.Color Mode (Blue): Press to cycle through five default colormodes and 15 additional color modes. For a complete list, refer toColor Modes on page 24.Freeze Frame (Red): Press to freeze the current image. Press itagain to turn off Freeze Frame mode and return to live view.14

Opening and Closing the HandleThe handle rotates to two open positions so that the unit can be held like amagnifying glass.15

Opening and Using the Reading StandRUBY XL HD also incorporates a reading stand so that it can be set on adocument allowing you to read an item at a convenient and consistent distance.1. On the top edge of the unit, use one thumb to push the ridge (1) in onedirection while using your other thumb to push one of the tabs (2a or 2b)in the opposite direction.16

2. The unit is spring loaded and opens to its full reading position. If the unitis off, it automatically turns on when the reading stand opens.17

3. Next, place the unit on a flat item, such as a document or photo, to viewand read it.4. When you close the reading stand, the unit automatically turns off.18

Magnifying Live ImagesWhen viewing a live image, you can use continuous zoom magnification between2x and 14x. Press and HOLD the yellow PLUS buttonPress and HOLD the yellow MINUS buttonto zoom in.to zoom out.Magnifying Frozen or Saved ImagesYou can freeze and then save an image that displays on the LCD screen. Whenviewing a frozen or saved image, you can zoom in or out in incremental steps bypressing the yellow buttons ( or ).For steps to freeze an image, refer to Freezing an Image on page 26.To access saved images, refer to Saving and Deleting an Image on page 31.19

Changing Color ModesA color mode is a pre-defined color combination (for example, yellow text on ablue background) that you can select when reading items with RUBY XL HD.The unit has five default color modes: Full Color; Black on White (high-contrastpositive); White on Black (high-contrast negative); Yellow on Blue; Yellow onBlack; and 15 additional color modes. For a complete list, refer to Color Modeson page 24. Press the blue arrow buttons ( or ) to change the current colorcombination on the LCD screen.The blue UP arrow button cycles in one direction through the colorcombination list while the blue DOWN arrow button cycles in the otherdirection.20

Switching Between the Last Used Color Mode and Full ColorRUBY XL HD provides the convenience of quickly switching between the lastcolor mode used and full color, or vice versa.This shortcut is useful when looking at a live image (for example, while holdingand reading a document) and using a color mode that provides the best contrastfor you. If you need to move the unit to a different part of the document, it maybe easier to switch to full color, move to the new location, and then return to yourcolor mode selection and continue reading.To do this, Press and HOLD the green/yellow button , and then press the blueDOWN arrow button . The screen changes from one mode to the other. To switch back, repeat the same button sequence again.21

Displaying More Color ModesRUBY XL HD has five default color modes. You can also activate and choosefrom a variety of 15 other color modes. Once a color mode is available, you caneasily switch to it using the blue arrow buttons ( or ).To add or remove other color modes,1. Press and HOLD the green/yellow buttonarrow buttonand then press the blue UPto enter Color Selection mode.The Enable check boxis active.displays indicating that the current color mode2. To disable the current color mode, press the blue DOWN arrowSTILL holding the green/yellow buttonthe check box. .22while. This button sequence clears

3. To scroll to the next color mode, press the blue UP arrowwhile STILLholding the green/yellow button. If the check box is selected (If the check box is cleared (), the color mode is enabled.), the color mode is disabled.4. To enable or disable a color mode, press the blue DOWN arrowwhileSTILL holding the green/yellow button to select or clear its check box.5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to continue adding or removing color modes.6. When you are finished loading color modes, release all buttons. Anycolor mode changes made will be saved, and the unit will return tonormal operating mode.23

Resetting Default Color ModesIf you have added or removed color modes that display on the screen, you canalways restore RUBY XL HD to its five default color modes. Press and HOLD the green/yellow buttonsimultaneously for 15 seconds.and the blue UP arrow buttonColor ModesThere are five factory default color modes and 15 additional color modes thatyou can make active.Default Color Modes1. Freezing an ImageFreezing an image on the LCD screen can be useful for reading labels on itemson a store shelf. By holding the unit close to the item and freezing the image, youcan then hold it close enough for you to read.1. Press the red buttonto freeze the image.If you like, press the yellow PLUS buttonto increase magnification, orthe yellow MINUS buttonto decrease magnification.2. Press the red buttonagain to turn off Freeze Frame mode andreturn to the live view.Note: To save a frozen image, press and HOLD the red buttonforthree seconds. Refer to Saving and Deleting an Image on page 31 formore information.26

Turning LED Lights OffWhen you turn on RUBY XL HD, the LED lights also turn on. To avoid glarewhen viewing reflective surfaces, you can turn off the LED lights.1. Press and HOLD the green/yellow buttonbutton, and then press the red. The LED lights turn off.2. To turn the lights on again, press and HOLD the green/yellow buttonand then press the red button.27,

Using Reading Line or Reading MasksThe reading line is a horizontal line that displays on the screen. Reading masksblock part of the screen to show a horizontal slice of the screen. Use these itemsto help you locate and maintain your place while viewing an image. When usingthe button sequence as described below, the unit cycles through displaying thereading line, the reading masks, and then no reading line or masks.Displaying Reading Line1. Press and HOLD the green/yellow button(1) and then press bothyellow buttons ( and(2 and 3)). The reading line displays on thescreen as shown in the next figure.28

2. Press and HOLD the green/yellow button(1) and then press theyellow PLUS button(2) or the yellow MINUS button(3) to movethe reading line up or down on the screen.Displaying Reading Masks1. Press and HOLD the green/yellow button(1) and then press bothyellow buttons ( and(2 and 3)) again to remove the reading lineand display the reading masks on the screen as shown in the nextfigure.29

2. Press and HOLD the green/yellow button(1) and then press theyellow PLUS button(2) or the yellow MINUS button(3) toincrease or decrease the distance between the masks.3. To remove reading masks from the screen, press and HOLD thegreen/yellow button (1) and then press and HOLD both yellowbuttons ( and(2 and 3)).30

Storage ModeStorage mode can save up to 80 images. When you first store an image, it issaved with the current magnification and color settings just as displayed on thescreen. When viewing a saved image, you can change the magnification level.Saving and Deleting an ImageAfter freezing an image on the screen, you can save it by doing the following.1. Press and HOLD the red buttonfor three seconds to enter Storagemode.2. The Save Image check boxis automatically selected and displays forthree seconds. This indicates that the image will be saved after exitingStorage mode and returning to live view.31

To delete an image while in Storage mode,1. Press and HOLD both yellow buttons (and ) to clear the check box. When you exit Storage mode, the image is deleted.2. Press and HOLD the red buttonfor three seconds to exit andreturn to live view.Viewing Saved ImagesRUBY XL HD can store up to 80 images. You can easily scroll through theimages using the blue arrow buttons ( and ).1. Press and HOLD the red buttonfor approximately six seconds toenter Review mode. 32To scroll forward through the saved images, press the blue UParrow ( ).

To scroll backward through the saved images, press the blueDOWN arrow ( ).2. Press and HOLD the red buttonfor approximately three seconds toexit and return to live view.33

Saving an Image When Memory is FullRUBY XL HD can store up to 80 images. If you try to save another image whenthe unit’s memory is full, the Memory Full icondisplays on the screen. Toadd another image, you must first remove one or more saved images frommemory.1. Press the blue UP arrow ( ) or the blue DOWN arrow ( ) to step to animage that you want to delete.2. Press both yellow buttons (and) to clear the check box.3. Press and HOLD the red buttonfor three seconds to exit Storagemode. The new image is saved, and all unchecked images are deleted.Note: To free space on the unit, you can also move images to acomputer. For more information, refer to Transferring Images to aComputer Using the USB Cable on page 36.34

Storage Mode IconsSave: Press the two yellow buttons ( and ) at the sametime to select the check box. The image is saved when you exitStorage mode.Delete: Press the two yellow buttons ( and ) at the sametime to clear the check box. The image is deleted when you exitStorage mode.Memory Full: Indicates that the maximum number of imageshave been saved on the unit. You must mark one or moreimages for deletionbefore you can save the current image.35

Transferring Images to a Computer Using the USB CableImages stored on RUBY XL HD can be transferred to your computer using thesupplied USB cable. To do this,1. Connect the supplied USB cable to the unit (1) and the computer.2. When connected, 36The USB symbol and battery icon briefly display on the LCD screen.
