In the preseason, our staff frequently meets to look over last year’s team to determine what the mostappropriate path moving forward is. Recently we tried to be as comprehensive with our defensive systemand philosophy as possible. The questions we raised generated some great discussion amongst our staff. At Xavier, we truly believe in coaching to our system; at the same time, we recognize that within the contextof our system from year to year we should make subtle changes that best fit our personnel.Below is an outline that covers our best attempt to place our defense “under the microscope” and put ourplayers and team in the best position to be successful.I.Transition DefenseA)B)C)How many players are we going to send to the offensive glass?Do we need to add any simple rules that will improve our transition defense?Do we like the drills we have to teach transition defense?II.Man DefenseA)B)C)D)E)F)G)What hurt us most last year defensively? How do we defend dribble penetration better? What screening actions created problems for us?Where do we want to pick up the dribbler? How do we want to defend the post? How do we want to defend ball screens?Note – we need to watch our stance off the ball and activity in gaps more closely.III.Zone DefenseA)B)C)D)How much zone do we want to play?Would it help us to have an even front and odd front zone so we can attack them both offensively inpractice? (We saw a lot of zone last season.)Do we want to be able to trap out of our zone defenses? How do we best teach rebounding out of our zone?IV.½ Court TrapA)B)C)D)E)F)How much do we want to play it?How big are our trappers? How do we want to rotate out of the trap?Do we want to stay in the trap or go “one and done”?When do we want to look to play it – dead balls, FT’s, end of half Do we have a better trapping line-up than others?V.PressesA)B)C)How much do we want to use the press? When do we want to press? How aggressive do we want to be with our press?Xavier

CONTINUEDD)E)F)Do we have a better pressing line-up than others?Who are our best trappers?Do we deny the point guard back once they pass out of the trap?VI.Inbound DefenseVII.Special DefenseA)B)C)D)A)B)C)Do we want to play strictly man?Do we want to trap the inbound pass? How do we want our inbound defender to play UOOB and SOOB?Scouting or System? (Scouting!)Do we want to have any “junk” in our system?Who would be our best denial defender?Does any team on our schedule potentially warrant a special defensive tactic? Some of the questions we asked ourselves are very simple, but it is always a good thing to have everyoneon the same page as well as examine ourselves and why we do the things that we do. It is also good tohave affirmation that we have reason to “sell out to the system” because we believe in it so strongly. We take great pride in our man defense. In the last five years, Xavier has been in the top 20 defensively –fewest points allowed per game. In four of those five years, our teams have held opponents under 40%from the field. So as comprehensive as we wanted to be in our evaluation of our entire defensivescheme, our “bread is buttered” with our man defense. We believe that you can only emphasize so muchand that you teach what you emphasize. Below are our “4 Core Defensive Values.”1)2)3)4)Transition Defense – no lay-upsBall Pressure – no free looksAwareness – no surprisesRebounding – no giftsWe coach our defense and rebounding every day. We do not want our players to ever be confused aboutour team identity – defend and rebound! We wish you the best of luck with your season.PLEASE CONTACT MARIO MERCURIO FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:513-745-3149 - mercuriom@xavier.eduXavier

Basketball Plays: The Art of Running Set Plays andScoring More PointsIt seems that almost everyone loves to draw up set plays and come up with new ways to get easy buckets fortheir team. It’s not surprising because there’s nothing more exciting than drawing up a special play to get a basket whenyou really need it!Imagine for a moment Your team is down by one. There’s 8 seconds left in the game. You draw up a special play during time a out.Your players execute to perfection And your team makes a wide open lay up right as the buzzer goes off and they win the game!!!Does it get any better than that?I think this is why so many people are intrigued by the set play and they’re always trying to find new ones. It’sa lot of fun!But before we get too far, let’s define a set play so we’re all on the same page What is a set play?A set play is a strategically planned and choreographed sequence of movements to get open shots and scorepoints. Generally speaking the sequence is run through just one time.Set plays are quick hitters to score points at a certain point during the game. They should not be your entireoffensive system. When should you use set plays?A set play typically adds a twist to an offense. It gives you the opportunity to show the defense somethingdifferent to keep them off balance. Plays can run into your motion offense, or you could choose to run a playafter running your offense for a certain amount of time.Page 5 Copyright 2008 Breakthrough Basketball, LLC.www.BreakthroughBasketball.com

Set plays are most commonly run out of the following special situations: after time outsat the beginning of games (right after the tip off)at end of gameswhen you really need a basketwhen your offense is stagnantafter your secondary breakHow do you choose the right set plays for your team? Not everything in this eBook will be applicable to your situation, but I’m confident you’ll find at least a coupleplays that will work great for your team. And don’t be afraid to experiment, create your own variation of theseplays, or make up your own.To choose the right set plays, you need to consider the following: Your offensive set. It’s best to choose set plays that have the same formation as your offensive set. So forexample, if you run your primary offense from a box set, it’s best to choose plays that have a similar boxformation. This way the defense doesn’t get a cue to what’s coming. Your personnel. This is important. If you have a phenomenal post player that is great at scoring inside, then you’ll want to choose lots of plays that will get them open inside. If your post game is poor but youhave great shooters and ball handlers, then choose plays that spread things out and keep the defense offbalance. You’ll need to carefully consider your players strengths and weaknesses when choosing your setplays. Your coaching preferences and philosophy. Not much needs to be said about this because it happensnaturally. But this is a consideration. Are you a conservative coach that likes to slow things down andexecute in the half court? Do you want to run and gun? Do you want to shoot lots of three pointers? Allthis will reflect the plays that you choose. Will you run the same plays and set offense every year? Or will you find new ones each year? This couldobviously eliminate the plays you ran last year. What are your plays designed to do? Most coaches have a dozen or so plays in their back pocket to dealwith various situations. So the first thing you should is do make a list of the various situations you want tobe prepared for. To give you an idea, you might want a couple plays to get post players open, a coupleplays when you need a basket during the game, a couple plays for end of game situations, and a coupleplays for the end of periods. But keep in mind, it’s better to just have a few good plays, that your playersbecome really good at, rather than overloading your team with too many options.Page 6 Copyright 2008 Breakthrough Basketball, LLC.www.BreakthroughBasketball.com

How to Score More Points: 16 Tips for Running Effective Set PlaysTip #1 - Stress executionThe reason that set plays work so well is that you have the opportunity to practice them ahead of time. However, if you don’t stress execution and make sure your players are doing things correctly, then your playswill be lack luster. You’ll need to make sure that your players are setting solid screens, rubbing off screens shoulder to shoulder, setting up their man before the screen, cutting quickly to the basket, and so on.Tip #2 - Stress concentrationAgain, the reason set plays can be effective is because they can be practiced and executed to near perfection. This means your players really need to concentrate to run it correctly. The concentration starts in your practicesand continues into games.Tip #3 - Make sure players know their rolesIf the key to a certain play is to have a screener that jab steps to set up their man and set a solid back screen, make sure they know their job. It takes five players all working together to make the play successful. As always, communicating with your players and letting them know their roles makes you more successful. This gets your players to take ownership, feel more involved, and improve the execution of your plays.Tip #4 - TimingTiming is critical in order to run plays effectively. It can also be one of the trickiest things for coaches andplayers to master. If your screener leaves too early, then your shooter will be open before the ball gets to them. And by the timesthe ball arrives, the defense has already recovered and the open shot is gone! You’ll need to constantly monitor and be aware of your timing.Tip #5 - PracticeThe recurring theme to all these tips revolves around practice. Practice is where points arescored. You should continually practice and refine your plays so your players know their roles, fundamentals, and everything so they can run the play in their sleep. Repetition, repetition, repetition!Tip #6 - Run your plays for the right peoplePage 7 Copyright 2008 Breakthrough Basketball, LLC.www.BreakthroughBasketball.com

Great coaches get the ball in the hands of the players at the right time so they can succeed. At the end of thegame, you might want to get the ball in the hands of your best player. Or perhaps you’ll want to position yourplayers on their favorite side of the floor. Bottom line, your plays have to fit your players.Tip #7 - Maintain good spacingPlenty of spacing between your players is important because it keeps the defense honest and spread out -- soyour offense has more room to cut and drive to the basket. It’s much easier to play good defense against a
