calledThe Sacrament of Holy OrdersLIFE NIGHT OUTLINEGoal for the Life NightThe goal for this night is to help teens understand therole and effects of Holy Orders for bishops, priests anddeacons. This night will also give teens practical tools todiscern their own vocation. Finally, this night will give theteens an opportunity to affirm and appreciate the priestsand deacons in the parish.Life Night at a GlanceIt is very important that your parish priest(s) and deacon(s)are present this night. Be sure to invite them to cometo Life Night well in advance. The night begins with agame that will help the teens get to know the priests alittle better. The game will lead into a teaching on theSacrament of Holy Orders. During the break the guys andgirls will split up into different groups. The girls will discussthe universal priesthood given to us in Baptism. The guyswill discuss the sacramental priesthood. At the end of thediscussion, the teens will have an opportunity to write anaffirmation letter to the priests or deacons thanking themfor their service. The Send will give the teens who arediscerning a vocation to the priesthood or religious life anopportunity to be prayed over by the priests and in returnthe teens will then pray over the priests of the parish forstrength and renewal.EnvironmentCALLEDThe environment for this night is very simple yet subtle.Hang floor-length black sheets across the whole frontof the meeting room. Down the center drape one whitecloth stripe. The idea is to make the environment looklike an enormous priest collar. Have a large cross and afew chairs or stools for the priests to sit on. There willalso need to be another meeting space that can be usedduring the girls/guys sessions.GATHER15 MinutesWelcome and Introductions (5 min)The youth minister gathers the group together andwelcomes everyone to the Life Night. He/she introducesany teens at Life Night for the first time.Know Your Clergy Game (10 min)(Disclaimer – you will need at least two priests and/ordeacons from your parish for this game, but if you can getmore – even better!)The youth minister should ask for four volunteers (onefrom each class). Give each contestant some sort ofnoisemaker—bell, whistle, kazoo, etc. Explain that manyof us don’t know much about the priests and deaconswho serve us but it’s time we learned a little bit aboutthem. The youth minister should read a fact about oneof the priests or deacons without giving his name. Thefirst teen to guess the correct priest or deacon will geta point. Have a Core member record the points. Makesure the facts span the priest’s whole life. For example:“This person’s favorite TV show is Lost” or “in high school, this person was a star pitcher on the baseball team.” Ifpossible, try to discover some really interesting and funnyfacts about the priests that the teens will relate to. If timeallows, have the priest tell a story corresponding with thefact. After 10-12 facts, award the teen with the mostcorrect answers a prize.PROCLAIM12 MinutesThe Party: Episode 7 (2 min)This semester features a reoccurring video series called“The Party.” Each Life Night of this semester features anew episode in which a teen hosts a party and the guestsare personifications of the seven sacraments. These shortvideos are designed to introduce the teaching for eachLife Night in the semester. In Episode 7, the sixth guest,Preston (representing Holy Orders), arrives. The persongiving the talk can point out the following ways that herepresents the sacrament:84EN CURRICULUMGUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE

Our universal priesthood serves theChurch in just as powerful a way as the sacramentalpriesthood. We as women have a very unique gift tooffer the Church. As women we have an example ofservice and sacrifice in Mary. She models for us surrenderand dedication to God in the way she followed her sonfaithfully and brought others to him. We too are called tobe a witness of faith and bring those to God through ourprayers, love and witness. The Party: Episode 7 can be found on Video Support 5Teaching can be found on pages 87-90.BREAK 35 MinutesGuy/Girl Rap Sessions (35 min)Break the group up into guys and girls rap sessions. Thegoal of these rap sessions is to discuss the priesthoodas it applies to each gender and give the teens anopportunity to ask questions. The girls will discuss theircall to the universal priesthood and the guys will discusstheir call to the sacramental priesthood. If possible, haveat least one priest at each rap session. Begin each groupin prayer thanking God for the gift of the sacrament. What are some things that we as a part of the universalpriesthood can offer as a sacrifice to serve the Church? If someone asked you, how would explain why womencan’t be priests in the Catholic Church? What questions do you have about the Sacrament ofHoly Orders? How can we better serve and lift up those who serve theChurch in the ordained priesthood?3. Affirmation LettersToo often the service and sacrifice of our priests goesunnoticed or unappreciated. End the large group byhaving all the girls write a letter of affirmation to the parishpriests thanking them for their yes to God’s call in their lifeand for the ways they serve the parish. Give the letters tothe priests at the end of the night.Girls1. Universal PriesthoodStart the session with an introduction similar to this. Besure to adapt as necessary for your group.Guys1. Sacramental PriesthoodStart the session with an introduction similar to this. Besure to adapt as necessary for your group. Many girls feel like a night on Holy Orders doesn’t reallyapply to us since we cannot be priests. Well, I havegood news for you! The priesthood does apply to us aswomen. Through our Baptism we are anointed PRIEST,prophet, and king. Each and every baptized Christian, man and woman, is called to what is known as theuniversal priesthood. The universal priesthood is like theFor many guys, the topic of priesthood is scary. We sayor think things like “What if God is calling me to this?” “ Idon’t really want to be a priest.” “I like girls too much tobe a priest.” “Priesthood is for holy people.” We start tomake up our minds without knowing what the vocation isreally about.CALLEDTeaching (10 min)The purpose of this teaching is to help the teens betterunderstand Holy Orders and how this sacrament impactsthe life of the Church. It should also address some of thecommon questions about the sacrament (i.e. celibacy,male-only, etc.). If possible, see if a priest or deacon fromthe parish can give this teaching.2. Discussion QuestionsUse the following questions to start a discussion. Ifpossible, have a priest or deacon available to answer anyquestions from the girls.85LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM

calledThe Sacrament of Holy OrdersLIFE NIGHT OUTLINE2. Priest WitnessInvite one of your priests to give a witness on his journeyof becoming a priest. Be sure to have him include someof the struggles and obstacles as well as how he knewthat God desired him to be a priest. Have him share howthe Lord is moving in his priesthood now. Allow time atthe end for the priest to answer questions from the guys.3. Discussion QuestionsUse the following questions to start a discussion: What are some tasks a priest gets to do that a mancalled to the married life or single life does not? How would you answer someone who asked why priestcannot get married in the Catholic Church? What are some of your reservations about the possibilityof God calling you to the priesthood? How can you be more open to God’s calling for yourlife?4. Affirmation LettersToo often the service and sacrifice of our priests goesunnoticed or unappreciated. End the large group byhaving all the guys write a letter of affirmation to the parishpriests thanking them for their yes to God’s call in their lifeand for the ways they serve the parish. Give the letters tothe priests at the end of the night.SEND 15 MinutesCALLEDRecap (5 min)The youth minister should recap the night and explain thatwe are never to young to discern God’s calling in our lives.Prayer is essential to vocation. We need prayer to helpguide us in our discernment as well as in our vocation. Itis through prayer that we will find strength to embrace thevocation God has planned for us. One of the oldest waysof calling upon the Holy Spirit is the laying on of hands. This ancient action is used in both the Sacrament of HolyOrders and Confirmation. Through the line of apostolicsuccession we receive the same Holy Spirit that camedown upon the apostles at Pentecost. It is the Holy Spiritthat will guide us in our discernment of God’s will and planfor our lives.Praying over Teens and Clergy (10 min)Invite all the teens who are discerning a religious vocation, whether a religious sister, brother, priesthood or deaconateto come forward. Be aware that there might only be twoor three teens come forward. Be sure to thank them fortheir openness to the calling of the Spirit in their lives.Have one of the priests lead a prayer over these teens.Ask all the other teens to extend their hands to pray withthe priest. The prayer should ask for an outpouring ofthe Holy Spirit as a guide in the teen’s discernment. Afterthose teens are prayed over, the youth minister should askall the priests and deacons to come forward. Invite one ortwo teens to write a prayer for the priests and deacons ofthe parish. The prayer should ask for a strengthening oftheir vocation and thanksgiving for answering God’s call tothe priesthood. Have all the teens extend their hands onemore time and the selected teens to pray over the priests.Close the night with the Hail Mary and Ave Maria.Community Connection Make sure to invite all the priests and deacons in yourparish to be a part of this Life Night well in advance. Invite a religious sister or a woman who is discerning thereligious life to share during the girls session. If your priest cannot stay for the guy’s breakout, invite aseminarian from the diocese to share with the guys.Making It Work If you only have one priest at your parish and/or LifeNight, have the Gather game be a true or false questiongame. If there is not enough time for the teens to write anaffirmation letter for the priests and deacons, challengethe teens to write one at home and bring it in next week. Work with the teens to plan a “clergy appreciation party.”This is a great way to create connections between theteens and the clergy of the parish. Let the teens takethe lead in the planning of this event. Follow up with any teens who came forward duringthe Send. Encourage them to pray and connectwith a priest or nun to answer any questions aboutdiscernment.86EN CURRICULUMGUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE

calledThe Sacrament of Holy OrdersTEACHINGWhat it is:If you’ve been to Mass, you’ve probably noticed thegentleman in the front. He’s there for a reason. He wascalled by the Lord, probably a long time ago, to serve theChurch in a way unlike anyone else can on this earth. Heis the priest—a member of the clergy. Someone whowalks in the footsteps of a continuous line of men thatdates all the way back to the first century when Christour Lord instituted the ecclesial fraternity of the HolyPriesthood. His calling in life—his vocation—is to receivethe Sacrament of Holy Orders. The priesthood and deaconate were instituted, as allsacraments were, by Christ. At the end of His time withhis apostles, “Jesus approached and said to them, ‘Allpower in heaven and on earth has been given to me.Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizingthem in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and ofthe holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I havecommanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.’” This command from the Lordwas specially given to this group of believers becausethey were to become the first bishops of the Church.Their work in the world became instrumental in the earlyChurch as customs were established through observingthe teachings of Christ that would later develop into thesacred Tradition with which we are familiar today.Note to the Presenter:In each of the sacramental teachings, we will attemptto cover the sacraments in three broad topics (what itis, how it is done, how it is lived). How you choose tomake these come to life is dependent on the night andon the people you have doing the teaching. This mightbe a semester that you choose to have teens take apart of the teaching each night. This will allow them toeducate themselves (which is great!) and be creative.Perhaps they create a video teaching, perhaps it isdone within a skit let your imagination run with it!Matthew 28:18-20CCC 876CCC 875The idea of having a mediator between man and God isnot new. We read about priests in the Old Testament. There was even an entire tribe of families in which the menwere born into the role of serving the other Hebrew tribesas the temple priests. They were responsible for makingthe sacrificial offerings to the Lord and conducting otherliturgical services.CCC 1539The role of the temple priest was fulfilled in Christ andin His sacrifice on the cross in which He serves as boththe man (the priest) making the offering on behalf ofthe people of God and as the actual sacrifice. Whenour parish priests celebrate the sacraments, they areCCC 1544CALLEDHoly Orders is a sacrament but also a vocation—anintrinsic calling by the Lord to follow and to serve in aspecial and complete way. As Christ washed the feet ofthe apostles at the Last Supper, so to does the clergyassume the role of Christ in service to the Church, even tothe point that they are literally acting in the person of Christ(in persona Christi).87LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM

calledThe Sacrament of Holy OrdersTEACHINGperforming a service in the place of Christ, as Hisrepresentative in the sacrament as Christ is the One HighPriest. How it’s done:To become a priest or deacon, you must be ordained.Ordination is a process that is the meat of the sacrament. It essentially is the sacrament. When Jesus sent out theapostles to evangelize the world, He “said to them again,‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I sendyou.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on themand said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’”The Holy Spirit truly changes the soul of the manbecoming a priest. It is the same sort of intrinsic changethat takes place during Baptism and Confirmation—itleaves an indelible mark on the soul. Once a man isa priest; he will always be a priest. This is called asupernatural vocation because it forgoes the naturalvocation of a person to find a spouse and raise a family.During the ceremony (which is held during a Mass), thebishop lays hands upon the man who is to becomeordained and says the words of ordination. At thismoment the Holy Spirit seals the heart of the man andhe is ordained either to the fraternity of bishops, theholy priesthood or the deaconate. For the ordination ofbishops and priests, holy oil is also used.CALLEDDeacons have always helped the Church throughout herexistence. They have been specially ordained men whoassist the priests in their pastoral responsibilities. They arenot, however, the same as a priest. They are not able tohear confessions, anoint the sick, or celebrate the Mass. They can baptize, preside over weddings, and assist in theMass. Deacons can also be married. They are ordainedinto the ministry of the priest, not into the ontologicalfraternity. The requirements to receive Holy Orders are simple. Onemust be a baptized male. The man must agree to livein celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom of God and amember of the Roman Catholic Church.John 20:21-22CCC 1581CCC 1582CCC 1558CCC 1575CCC 1561CCC 1569CCC 1578It is also important that a man is formally educated in theways of the Church. Just as in any other job, you wouldrequire some bit of vocational training before you beganto work. So to are men educated in seminaries for manyyears before their ordination.88EN CURRICULUMGUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE

calledThe Sacrament of Holy OrdersTEACHINGMen must also want to enter into a life-long commitmentto prayer and service for the sake of the Church. Thisrequires an able mind and body in order to effectively liveout the vocation. Men don’t receive the Sacrament ofHoly Orders because they merely desire it; God must callthem to the sacrament. It is the grace of the Holy Spiritthat enables a man to live a life in service to the Churchand sustain him through his journey.CCC 1578How it’s lived:According to the nature of the Sacrament, Holy Ordersmust be lived. The life of a priest is one of service, as allChristians should embrace. However, the life of a priestis unique. He is enfolded in the apostolic lineage of theChurch—acting as a “servant leader” in the person ofChrist for all the Church to witness and from whom theChurch benefits.CCC 1547Certain ordinations are lived differently. The roles andresponsibilities have already been mentioned for priestsand deacons. Bishops are unique. They are morerepresentative of the apostles. They govern the Churchand are at the highest seats of Church hierarchy under thepapacy. Bishops receive the fullness of the sacrament.CCC 1521CCC 1522Why can’t women be priests? And that brings us back to the question of symbols. Foras with water in baptism and wine in Eucharist, it is notthat a man is superior to a woman in being "matter" forthe priesthood. It is that man is a fitting symbol of theBridegroom and woman is not. The priest is an “alterChristus” -another Christ - to the Bride in the mystery ofthe Mass. He does not primarily just preach or pastor. Hesignifies.CALLEDChrist is the Bridegroom to the Church's Bride in the greatmarriage feast of the Kingdom (Matthew 25:1-13). Genderhas, in Christ's teaching, a real meaning and is not simplyan accident of nature. And He ought to know, since Hedesigned the human person and made us a participant inthe mystery of male and femaleness. And so every Mass isa local marriage feast of the Lamb whereby we enter intothe self-sacrificial love of that cosmic Bridegroom for hisBride.89LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM

calledThe Sacrament of Holy OrdersTEACHINGOrdination is a gift. It's a sacrament, and like allsacraments, it does what it symbolizes and symbolizeswhat it does. Symbols therefore matter-particularly thosethat Christ himself has instituted-and the Church has nopower to alter such symbols. Christ and the apostlesrevealed what the "matter" of ordination should be just asthey revealed what the matter of Baptism and Eucharistshould be. The Church merely obeys. Why can’t priests be married?A priest’s job is essentially to be a priest; he has to beChrist whenever he is called upon. In the same way amother never has a “day off” from being a mom, priestsare always “on call.” Yes, it is true that they have dayswhere they are not responsible for the day-to-day work ofthe parish, especially in parishes where there are severalpriests. There may be days full of meetings and specialliturgies, but unlike a traditional, 8 to 5 job, a priest isalways a priest. His vocation is complete, just as thevocation to be someone’s husband or wife is complete inand of itself.CALLEDImagine if a priest was married and “off the clock,” so tospeak. Where would his vocation lie? If someone neededconfession, but he was sitting down to dinner with his wifeand children, where would his duty lie? If a priest’s wifewere in labor in hospital, but someone in another sectionof the hospital was dying and in need of Anointing of theSick, to whom does he owe his time and fidelity? Thesacrifice to the Church is all encompassing, as a husbandto his wife and wife to her husband. The priest representsChrist to the members of the Church, the bride of Christ. The priest takes on the life in supreme imitation of thebridegroom. This is the meaning of his vocation.Only priests can celebrate Mass and only priests canabsolve sin, both by the power of the Holy Spirit, in thename of Jesus, by the power of God the Father. Thisspecial grace is given for the sake of the Bride of Christ, that they may one day go to heaven. This is a very uniqueand amazing role in the plan of salvation.90EN CURRICULUMGUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE LIFE TEEN CURRICULUM GUIDE
