EnglishSafety Precautions andWorking TechniquesSpecial safety precautions must be observedwhen working with thispower tool because it hasvery sharp, high-speedcutting blades.It is important you readand understand theinstruction manual beforeusing your unit for thefirst time and keep themanual in a safe place forfuture reference. Nonobservance of the safetyprecautions may result inserious or even fatalinjury.Observe all application local safetyregulations, standards and ordinances.If you have not used this type of powertool before: Have your dealer or otherexperienced user show you how tooperate your power tool or attend aspecial course in power tool operation.Minors should never be allowed to use apower tool.Bystanders, especially children, andanimals should not be allowed in thearea where a power tool is in use.When the power tool is not in use, shut itoff so that it does not endanger others.Secure it against unauthorized use.The user is responsible for avoidinginjury to third parties or damage to theirproperty.2Do not lend or rent your power toolwithout the instruction manual. Be surethat anyone using it understands theinformation contained in this manual.consult a servicing dealer. EnglishWear safety glasses andhearing protection, e.g.earplugs or ear muffs.Wear heavy-duty gloves.STIHL offers a comprehensive range ofpersonal protective clothing andequipment.Transporting the Power ToolAlways turn off the engine.Always fit the blade guard (scabbard)before carrying your hedge trimmershort distances.Carry the power tool by the handle –cutting blades behind you. Avoidtouching hot parts of the machine,especially the muffler and gear housing– you could suffer serious burns.Transporting in a vehicle: Properlysecure your power tool to preventturnover, fuel spillage and damage.FuelingGasoline is anextremely flammablefuel. Keep clear of nakedflames. Do not spill anyfuel – do not smoke.Always shut off the engine beforerefueling.Hedge Trimmer Safety ManualDo not fuel a hot engine – fuel may spilland cause a fire.Open the fuel cap carefully to allow anypressure build-up in the tank to releaseslowly and avoid fuel spillage.Fuel your power tool only in wellventilated areas. If you spill fuel, wipethe machine immediately – if fuel gets onyour clothing, change immediately.Your power tool comes standard witheither a screw-type or bayonet-type fuelcap.–Engage the blade lock (if fitted).–Slide control / stop switch mustmove easily to STOP or 0–Smooth action of throttle triggerinterlock and throttle trigger – thethrottle trigger must returnautomatically to the idle position.–Check that the spark plug boot issecure – a loose boot may causearcing that could ignite combustiblefumes and cause a fire.–Cutting blades securely mountedand in good condition (clean, movefreely, not warped), properlysharpened and thoroughly sprayedwith STIHL resin solvent (lubricant).–Check cutter guard (if fitted) fordamage.–Never attempt to modify the controlsor the safety devices in any way.–Keep the handles dry and clean –free from oil and dirt – for safecontrol of the power tool.After fueling, tightendown the screw-type fuelcap as securely aspossible.Insert the fuel cap withhinged grip (bayonet-typecap) correctly in theopening, turn it clockwiseas far as stop and fold thegrip down.This reduces the risk of unit vibrationscausing the fuel cap to loosen or comeoff and spill quantities of fuel.To reduce the risk of serious of fatalburn injuries, check for fuel leakage. Iffuel leakage is found, do not start or runthe engine until leak is fixed.Before StartingCheck that your power tool is properlyassembled and in good condition – referto appropriate chapters in the instructionmanual.To reduce the risk of personal injury,do not operate your power tool if it isdamaged or not properly assembled.Starting the EngineStart the engine at least 3 meters fromthe fueling spot, outdoors only.Place the unit on firm ground in an openarea. Make sure you have good balanceand secure footing. Hold the unitsecurely. The cutting blades must beclear of the ground and all otherobstructions because they may begin torun when the engine starts.3

Wrap your fingersand thumbs around the handles.Right-handersDuring OperationIn the event of impending danger or inan emergency, switch off the engineimmediately by moving the slide control/ stop switch to 0 or STOP.Check that there are no bystanders inthe general work area.Watch the cutting blades at all times –do not cut areas of the hedge that youcannot see.Be extremely careful when cutting tallhedges, check the other side of thehedge before starting work.Right hand on the control handle and lefthand on the front handle.4If the cutting blades still run, have yourdealer check your machine and makeproper adjustments or repairs. Checkand correct the idle speed setting atregular intervals.Make sure the idle speed setting iscorrect. The cutting blades must not runwhen the engine is idling with the throttletrigger released.The gearbox becomes hot duringoperation. To reduce the risk of burninjury, do not touch the gear housing.Take special care in slippery conditions– damp, snow, ice, on slopes or unevenground.Clear away fallen branches, scrub andcuttings.Watch out for obstacles: Roots, treestumps or holes which could cause youto trip or stumble.Make sure you always have goodbalance and secure footing.When working at heights:–Always use a lift bucket–Never work on a ladder or in a tree–Never work on an insecure support–Never operate your unit with onehandBe particularly alert and cautious whenwearing hearing protection becauseyour ability to hear warnings (shouts,alarms, etc.) is restricted.To reduce the risk of accidents, take abreak in good time to avoid tiredness orexhaustion.Hedge Trimmer Safety Manual
EnglishWork calmly and carefully – in daylightconditions and only when visibility isgood. Stay alert so as not to endangerothers.Your power tool producestoxic exhaust fumes assoon as the engine isrunning. These fumesmay be colorless andodorless and containunburned hydrocarbonsand benzol. Never runthe engine indoors or inpoorly ventilated locations, even if your modelis equipped with a catalytic converter.To reduce the risk of serious or fatalinjury from breathing toxic fumes,ensure proper ventilation when workingin trenches, hollows or other confinedlocations.To reduce the risk of accidents, stopwork immediately in the event ofnausea, headache, visual disturbances(e.g. reduced field of vision), problemswith hearing, dizziness, deterioration inability to concentrate. Apart from otherpossibilities, these symptoms may becaused by an excessively highconcentration of exhaust gases in thework area.Operate your power tool so that itproduces a minimum of noise andemissions – do not run the engineunnecessarily, accelerate the engineonly for cutting.To reduce the risk of fire, do not smokewhile operating or standing near yourpower tool. Note that combustible fuelvapor may escape from the fuel system.Hedge Trimmer Safety ManualIf your power tool is subjected tounusually high loads for which it was notdesigned (e.g. heavy impact or a fall),always check that it is in good conditionbefore continuing work – see also"Before Starting". Check the fuel systemin particular for leaks and make sure thesafety devices are working properly. Donot continue operating your power tool ifit is damaged. In case of doubt, have themachine checked by your servicingdealer.Do not operate your power tool with thestarting throttle lock engaged – enginespeed cannot be controlled in thisposition.Inspect the hedge and work area toavoid damaging the cutting blades:Opening the throttle while the blades areblocked increases the load and reducesengine speed. The clutch then slipscontinuously and this causesoverheating and damage to importantcomponents (e.g. clutch, polymerhousing components) – and this canincrease the risk of injury from theblades moving while the engine is idling.If the hedge is very dusty or dirty, spraythe blades with STIHL resin solvent fromtime to time during cutting. This helpsreduce blade friction as well as theaggressive effects of sap and the buildup of dirt particles.The dust that occurs during operationmay be harmful to health. If dust levelsare very high, wear a suitable respirator.–Remove stones, rocks, pieces ofmetal and other solid objects.Before leaving the power toolunattended: Shut off the engine.–When working close to the ground,make sure that no sand, grit orstones get between the blades.–Take particular care when cuttinghedges next to or against wirefences.Check the cutting blades at regular shortintervals during operation orimmediately if there is a noticeablechange in cutting behavior:To avoid the risk of electrocution, donot touch electric power lines – never cutthrough electric power lines.Do not touch the cuttingblades while the engine isrunning. If the cuttingblades become jammedby thick branches orother obstructions, switchoff the engine immediately before attempting tofree the blades.–To shut down the engine–Wait until the cutting blades havecome to a complete standstill.–Check condition and tightness, lookfor cracks.–Check sharpness.To reduce the risk of fire, always cleanplant residue, chips, leaves and excesslubricant off the engine and muffler.After Finishing WorkAlways clean dust and dirt off themachine – do not use any greasesolvents for this purpose.5

Run the engine briefly so thatthe solvent is evenly distributed.VibrationsProlonged use of the power tool mayresult in vibration-induced circulationproblems in the hands ("white fingerdisease").No general recommendation can begiven for the length of usage because itdepends on several factors.The period of usage is prolonged by:–Hand protection (wearing warmgloves)–Work breaksThe period of usage is shortened by:–Any personal tendency to sufferfrom poor circulation (symptoms:frequently cold fingers, tinglingsensation)–Low outside temperatures–Amount of gripping force (holdingthe power tool tightly restrictscirculation)Users who use the machine periodicallyor for long periods or users whorepeatedly experience correspondingsymptoms (e.g., tingling sensation infingers), should undergo a medicalexamination.Maintenance and RepairsService the machine regularly. Do notattempt any maintenance or repair worknot described in the instruction manual.Have all other work performed by aservicing dealer.STIHL recommends that you haveservicing and repair work carried outexclusively by an authorized STIHLservicing dealer. STIHL dealers areregularly given the opportunity to attendtraining courses and are supplied withthe necessary technical information.Only use high-quality replacement partsin order to avoid the risk of accidentsand damage to the machine. If you haveany questions in this respect, consult aservicing dealer.Use only a spark plug of the typeapproved by STIHL and make sure it isin good condition – see "Specifications".Inspect the ignition lead (insulation ingood condition, secure connection).Check the condition of the muffler.To reduce the risk of fire and damageto hearing, do not operate yourmachine if the muffler is damaged ormissing.Do not touch a hot muffler since burninjury will result.Vibration behavior is influenced by thecondition of the AV elements – check theAV elements at regular intervals.STIHL recommends the use of genuineSTIHL replacement parts.
