The human mind is fertile soil fornew ideas to take root. WelcomeWelcome to the Australian StringQuartet 2018 season. From thesurging momentum of Philip Glassto the contemplative closure ofShostakovich’s tenth string quartet,we are pleased to present a menuof works that will traverse the vastspectrum of human emotions.Major works of the mastercomposers, Mendelssohn,Beethoven, Schubert andShostakovich headline eachprogram. Interspersed amongthese milestones are a selectionof audacious contributions fromleading figures of the contemporarymusical world. Through the lensof these modern works, themasterworks of the past are viewedin a new light, restoring the potencyof their uplifting spirit.Mendelssohn banishes the cloudsto allow the sun to radiate gloriouslyin the most uplifting of all of hisstring quartets. Beethoven’slife traversed magnificenceand struggle, reflected in theextraordinary trajectory of thesixteen string quartets that spanhis career. His very first and lastquartets, whilst worlds apart, areremarkably similar in the sense ofunshaded classicism they share.Schubert warms the soul with abeguiling concoction of musicaltenderness and dramatic sensibility, alongside the tenth quartet ofShostakovich, which journeysthrough a rich landscape of shiftingcharacters, all evoking a senseof the composer’s search forunderstanding and wisdom. We eagerly anticipate the premiereof a newly commissioned stringquartet by Perth-based composer,James Ledger. Brett Dean’s brilliantfirst string quartet, Eclipse, will bepaired with the iconic Americanminimalist, Philip Glass, andJörg Widmann’s wildly theatricalHunt Quartet will offer a flightof fantasy amidst two toweringachievements of Beethoven. This is a journey of contrasts that willignite your senses and provide foodfor thought. In the spirit of curiosityand adventure, we invite you tojoin us as we uncover these musicalgems, old and new.Dale, Francesca, Stephen & Sharon

GlassDeanMendelssohnTour 1Philip Glass reflects upon the lifeof the iconic poet Yukio Mishima ina work of great evocative power, gripping in its vivid musical imageryof the controversial artist’s turbulentlife. Brett Dean’s art is driven byserious concerns and his first stringquartet responds to the events ofthe refugee crisis, through musicof haunting eeriness and explosiveanger reaching tentatively towardsthe hope for peace. The intensity of these openingworks finds a perfect counterpoisein Mendelssohn’s radiant StringQuartet in D major, where thecomposer marshals the fullresources of his prodigiousmusicality in a virtuosic creationof musical sunshine. With all theecstatic brilliance of the composer’smost joyful music, the quartetreminds us of music’s power torevive the spirit.Philip Glass String Quartet no 3 MishimaBrett Dean String Quartet no 1 EclipseMendelssohn String Quartet in D major op 44 no 1Canberra Sun 11 February, 2pmSydney Mon 12 February, 7pmAdelaide Thu 15 February, 7pmMelbourne Fri 16 February, 7pmPerth Mon 19 February, 7pmBrisbane Thu 22 February, 7pm

BeethovenWidmannBeethovenTour 2The spirit of Beethoven fuelsthis dramatic recital, juxtaposingthe first and last of his masterfulquartets.Beethoven String Quartet in F major op 135Jörg Widmann String Quartet no 3 Hunt QuartetBeethoven String Quartet in D major op 18 no 3In 1826, Beethoven’s personal lifehad descended into swirling chaos. But the majestic opus 135 Quartethe composed in that year gives nohint of it. The quartet is a miracleof transcendent beauty whereBeethoven reconciles the competingsensibilities of classical orderand radical Romanticism, tofind consolation in the work’srestorative harmony.Brisbane Tue 26 June, 7pmSydney Fri 29 June, 7pmCanberra Sun 1 July, 2pmMelbourne Tue 3 July, 7pmAdelaide Thu 5 July, 7pmPerth Mon 9 July, 7pmGerman composer Jörg Widmannchannels the spirit of Beethoven theinnovator in a work of mischievousiconoclasm, transforming the drivingrhythms of the seventh symphonyinto a startling tour-de-force of theart of performance.Published in 1801, the first quartetannounces Beethoven’s arrival asmusical wunderkind of the newcentury. The young composerexhibits his command of the style ofthe master composers, Mozart andHaydn, and points forward to theways he would transcend them.

SchubertLedgerShostakovichTour 3Works by two of the great quartetcomposers bookend this fascinatingprogram. Schubert consideredhis thirteenth quartet to be a newbeginning, where a command ofdramatic expressiveness, gatheredfrom his recent experiments incomposing for plays and opera, infuses his natural lyrical gift witha new dimension of emotionaland pictorial power.Shostakovich wrote his tenthquartet at the idyllic spa resort ofDilizhan and the spirit of respiteand communion with nature lendsthe work a rare sense of ease. Butpowerful feelings are by no meansabsent and in its wild twists of moodand pace, the quartet essays a richjourney towards emotional wisdom.A contemporary flavour isadded with an electric new work byJames Ledger, now a leading figureamong Australia’s composers, renowned for his ability to createstriking imagery in musical form.Schubert String Quartet no 13 in A minor RosamundeJames Ledger String Quartet no 2 Transmissions*Shostakovich String Quartet no 10in A-flat major op 118*World premiere performancesPerth Wed 26 September, 7pmBrisbane Mon 1 October, 7pmMelbourne Tue 2 October, 7pmSydney Wed 3 October, 7pmCanberra Sun 7 October, 2pmAdelaide Tue 9 October, 7pm
