Duringsudden braking or a collision, youcan slide under the lap belt and sufferserious internal injuries. Formaximum protection, sit well backand upright.Unlocked Seatback:A seatback plays an important role inyour protection in a vehicle. Leavingthe seatback unlocked is dangerous asit can allow passengers to be ejectedor thrown around and baggage tostrike occupants in a sudden stop orcollision, resulting in severe injury. After adjusting the seatback at anytime, even when there are no otherpassengers, rock the seatback to makesure it is locked in place. To change the seatback angle, leanforward slightly while raising the lever. Then lean back to the desired position andrelease the lever.LeverMake sure the lever returns to its originalposition and the seatback is locked inplace by attempting to push it forward andbackward.CAUTIONWhen returning a rear-reclinedseatback to its upright position, makesure you support the seatback whileoperating the seatback lever. J07L(02MY).book Page 4 Monday, June 11, 2001 4:52 PMEssential Safety EquipmentSeat Belt SystemsSeat Belt PrecautionsSeat belts help to decrease the possibility of severe injury during accidents and suddenstops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belts. All of the seat belt retractors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the waywhen not in use.The driver’s seat belt has no provisions for child-restraint systems and has only anemergency locking mode. The driver may wear it comfortably, and it will lock during acollision. However, the passenger’s seat lap/shoulder belt retractors operate in two modes:emergency locking mode, and for child-restraint systems, automatic locking mode.2-4Form No. 8Q42-EA-01F

J07L(02MY).book Page 5 Monday, June 11, 2001 4:52 PMEssential Safety EquipmentSeat Belt SystemsWARNINGNot Wearing Seat Belts:Not wearing a seat belt is extremely dangerous. During a collision, occupants notwearing seat belts could hit someone or things inside the vehicle or even be thrownout of the vehicle. They could be seriously injured or even killed. In the samecollision, occupants wearing seat belts would be much safer. Always wear your seatbelt and make sure all occupants are properly restrained.Seat Belt Damaged During an Accident:Using a damaged seat belt is dangerous. An accident could damage the belt webbingof the seat belt in use. A damaged seat belt cannot provide adequate protection in acollision. Have an Authorized Mazda Dealer inspect all seat belt systems in use duringan accident before they are used again.Twisted Seat Belts:Twisted seat belts are dangerous. In a collision, the full width of the belt isn’tavailable to absorb the impact. This puts more force on the bones beneath the belt, which could break them or cause other serious injury or death. Don’t wear twistedseat belts. One Belt, One Passenger:Using one seat belt for more than one person at a time is dangerous. A seat belt usedin this way can’t spread the impact forces properly and the two passengers could becrushed together and seriously injured or even killed. Never use one belt for morethan one person at a time.CAUTIONBelt retraction may become difficult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep themclean.Ring2-5Form No. 8Q42-EA-01F

J07L(02MY).book Page 6 Monday, June 11, 2001 4:52 PMEssential Safety EquipmentSeat Belt Systems Pregnant Women and Persons with Serious Medical ConditionsPregnant women should wear seat belts. Ask your doctor for specific recommendations. The lap belt should be worn SNUGLY AND AS LOW AS POSSIBLE OVER THE HIPS.Persons with serious medical conditions also should wear seat belts. Check with yourdoctor for any special instructions regarding specific medical conditions. Emergency Locking ModeIf the belt has fully retracted, it will always be in the emergency locking mode until youmove it into automatic locking mode by pulling the belt all the way out to its full length. Inthe emergency locking mode, the belt remains comfortable on the occupant and theretractor will lock in position during a collision. If the belt feels tight and hinders comfortable movement while the vehicle is stopped or inmotion, you may be in the automatic locking mode because you have pulled the belt too farout. To return to the more comfortable emergency locking mode, wait until you can stopthe vehicle in a safe area, retract the belt fully to convert it back to emergency lockingmode and then again extend it around you. Automatic Locking ModeAlways use the automatic locking mode to keep the child-restraint system from shifting toan unsafe position in the event of an accident. To get the seat belt into the automaticlocking mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instructed on the child-restraintsystem. It will retract down to the child-restraint system and stay locked on it. See thesection on child restraint (page 2-12).2-6Form No. 8Q42-EA-01F

The pretensioners take upslack in the seat belts as the air bags areexpanding. The load limiting systemreleases belt webbing in a controlledmanner to reduce belt force on theoccupant’s chest.NOTEIf a belt does not fully retract, inspect itfor kinks and twists. To secure the passenger's seat belt whennot in use, insert the belt tongue into theslot.2-8Form No. 8Q42-EA-01F

You could accidentallyactivate it or make it inoperable whichwould prevent it from activating in anaccident. The occupants could beseriously injured. Never modify thecomponents or wiring, or useelectronic testing devices on thepretensioner system.NOTE The pretensioner system will onlyactivate in a moderate or greaterfrontal or near-frontal collision. Itwill not activate in side or rearimpacts. Some smoke (non-toxic gas) will bereleased when the air bags andpretensioners deploy. This does notindicate a fire. This gas normallyhas no effect on occupants, however, those with sensitive skinmay experience light skin irritation. If residue from the deployment ofthe air bags or the pretensionersystem gets on the skin or in theeyes, wash it off as soon as possible. The seat belt pretensioners will onlyfunction once. After they areexpended, they will not work againand must be replaced immediately, even if there was no seat occupantseated at the time.Pretensioner System Disposal:Improper disposal of the pretensionersystem or a vehicle with nondeactivated pretensioners isdangerous. Unless all safetyprocedures are followed, injury couldresult. Ask an Authorized MazdaDealer how to safely dispose of thepretensioner system or how to scrap apretensioner-equipped vehicle.2-9Form No. 8Q42-EA-01F
