OPTICAL CONNECTOR CONTAMINATIONWHAT HAPPENS IF THE OPTICALCONNECTOR ENDFACE BECOMESCONTAMINATED?Examples of common contaminants adhering to end face:Troubles caused by connectorend face contamination:Light istransmittedpoorly ornot at all.Hand LotionFiber ResidueDirt and DustFiber ResidueLight isreflectedback toconnectionpoint**returning to the transmission point, causingequipment breakdown or bit errors.Optical connector must have no contaminationprior to matingWhat can happen when the optical end face is dirty? The beam of lightmay not be able to travel through the core. Optical connectors becomecontaminated from a variety of reasons. Usually 2 - 15 micron sized contaminants will have an impact on the signal transmission and could causedamage to the optical end face. The majority of network down time iscaused by optical connector contamination.Light RayLight beam is prevented from passing through due to contaminants onthe end face, resulting in light reflection.Reflected LightWHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN CONTAMINANTS ADHERE TO THE CORE?Mating a clean connector to a dirty connectorWhen the unclean optical connector is mated, the contaminant is forcedinto the ferrule and may become permanently damaged. In this situation, the damage cannot be removed with an optical cleaner. Contaminants at the side of the ferruleprevent light from properly passingthrough due to poor alignment.OCCFIBER.COM 6When contaminants adhere to the core, they will cause increase in signalinterruption and increase amount of insertion loss and degradation ofreturn loss. Also, these kinds of contaminants can cause chips, pits, andscratches in the connector end face under the pressure of the physicalconnection. Large contaminants can result in gaps in the physical connection, resulting in increased loss. These kinds of contaminants can actually spread and migrate by the physical connection.

Fiber damage, changes in the fiber wall structure, reduced single softwood kraft fiber strength and fiber deformations (curl, kinks and dislocations) all affected the fiber network properties. Mechanical treatment at the end of kraft cooking conditions resulted in fiber damage such that single fiber strength was reduced.

C A B L E B L O w i N ghand held Fiber Blower The Condux hand held fiber blower is ideal for shorter run fiber optic cable or micro fiber optic cable installations. properties of fiber composites [1]. A number of tests involving specimens with a single fiber have been developed, such as single fiber pull-out tests, single fiber fragmentation tests and fiber push-out tests [2-4]. Yet it still remains a challenge to characterize the mechanical properties of the fiber/matrix interface for several reasons.
