Section C. 2.University Emergency NT PLANS (Appendix)Emergency Management PlanSeptember 2008, Reviewed September 2009WEATHER EMERGENCIES(MUBOG GA-9, Revised 06/11/2013)Generally it is Marshall University’s policy tomaintain its normal schedule, even when conditionsare inclement. However, that is not always possible. In those instances when it is necessary to alter theschedule in response to weather conditions, everyeffort will be made to notify all those affected—students, faculty, staff and the general public—asexpeditiously and as comprehensively as possible inthe following ways:1.The university subscribes to a third-partyservice to provide notifications by e-mail, textmessage, and telephone, referred to as “MUAlert” at Marshall. All students, faculty andstaff will be enrolled in the MU Alert databasewith their university e-mail addresses, and, inthe case of faculty and staff, their officetelephone numbers. Students, faculty and staffmay provide additional contact methods, including those for text messaging and cellphone numbers, through the use of the myMUportal. In cases of weather-related or other s staff will use all contactpoints in MU Alert to send notification.2.The Television stations in Huntington andCharleston will be notified.3.Radio stations in Huntington and Charlestonwill be asked to announce the delay or closing.4.Time permitting; newspapers in Huntingtonand Charleston will be notified. Often, however, decisions must be made afterdeadlines of newspapers.5.The Office of University Communications willcommunicate the specific details of the delayor closing to the Office of Public Safety at 696HELP.Information about closing, cancellations, or delayswill ordinarily be disseminated to area radio andtelevision stations. These outlets may, however, publish the University’s notification incorrectly. Therefore, the authoritatively correct statement of theUniversity’s condition (Huntington) is stipulated tobe the message on the main page of the website athttp://www.marshall.edu.This section applies only to the Huntington campusand all releases should make it clear that it relatesonly to the Huntington campus. The weather-relatedclosings policy for the South Charleston campus andother education centers will be managed by the chiefadministrative officer (as designated by theUniversity president) for the respective location, andall releases should make clear that the release appliesonly to the affected location. The South Charlestonphone number is 746-2500. See Section 4 forinformation on procedures for other locations.Types of delays and closings:University Closed: All classes suspended and officesclosed.Classes Cancelled: All classes suspended; officesopen.Delay Code A: Means a delay in the opening ofclasses BUT no delay in the opening of offices.Delays will usually be in the range of one to twohours. Employees are expected to report to work attheir normal starting times unless they feel that travelis unsafe. If an employee feels that he/she cannottravel safely to work, they may charge accruedannual leave for the portion of the workday from 8:00a.m. (or their normal start time) until their arrival atwork.Delay Code B: Means a delay in the opening ofclasses AND a delay in the opening of offices.Delays will
