The Coming of BeowulfBefore King Hrothgar, Beowulf boasts ofhis background and accomplishments,then tells him he intends to kill Grendelwith his bare hands.5

The Battle with GrendelThat night, Beowulf and his men stay inHerot.Grendel lurks inside and kills a Geat; then,he meets his match in Beowulf whorips off the monster’s arm and hangs itfrom the rafters.Grendel escapes, but is mortally wounded.6

The Battle with GrendelThe Danes and the Geats celebrateBeowulf’s victoryBut Grendel’s mother comes that nightseeking revenge. She killsHrothgar’s friend and takes backher son’s claw.7

The Battle with Grendel’s MotherBeowulf leaps into the lake and sinksfor hours (superhuman powers)Grendel’s mother’s claws have noeffect on Beowulf (his divine mailshirt protects him) so she carrieshim to her underground home9

The Battle with Grendel’s MotherBeowulf tries to kill her with his sword,Hrunting, but her enchanted skincannot be pierced.Fortunately, a sword appears that wasforged by giant.Beowulf takes the magic sword and useshis supernatural strength to strike theshe-beast dead.10

The Battle with Grendel’s MotherThe Danes see the lake water churn withblood and think Beowulf is dead, sothey head home.But the loyal Geats wait Meanwhile, Beowulf finds Grendel’s bodyand cuts off his head. He and theGeats carry it back to Herot as atrophy.11

The Last BattleBeowulf is honored by Hrothgar, thenreturns to Geatland where he rulesas king for 50 years.Now an old man, a dragon menaceshis kingdom.12

The Last BattleBeowulf tells his people that he will fight thefire-breathing dragon using his armor,without shame, since he will fight to thedeath if necessary.13

The Last BattleBeowulf and the dragon face off, butBeowulf’s weapons fail him and herealizes he is going to die.All the Geats run away, except Wiglaf.14

The Last BattleWiglaf and Beowulf kill the dragon, butBeowulf is mortally wounded.Beowulf asks Wiglaf to bring him thetreasure that the dragon was guarding.15

The SpoilsWiglaf brings Beowulf the gold and treasurejust as Beowulf is about to die.Beowulf gives Wiglaf his necklace, helmet,rings, mail shirt, as signs that Wiglafwill be the new king.16

The FarewellThe Geats build the tower and mournand praise their perished leader.Beowulf asks Wiglaf to build atowering tomb to honor him.17

The FarewellBeowulf lives on in memory andhistory because he is the epic hero!He embodies the Anglo-Saxon warrior cultureof bravery, strength, leadership, goodreputation, loyalty to king, and the beliefthat goodness will always triumph overevil!

EPIC is a long narrative poem about a hero, who exemplifiesthe culture. It is told in an elevated style. It normally includes a quest or a series of trials. Often, the hero will descend into the underworld (likeOdysseus, Achilles). Note that Beowulf descends intoan underworld of his own, when he travels to the lair ofGrendel’s mother.

EPIC HERO Normally a male of high birth (i.e., noble/royal/divine) Often has superhuman powers, and Exemplifies the cultural values of his community. He goes on quests. He tends to conquer things or people or lands.
