November 2011Page 9PROGRAM REPORTCurator of Collections Speaks at Club MeetingMr. Peter Wisbey, Curator of Collections at theGenesee Country Village and Museum in Mumford, was our program speaker on October 24th.He was invited to our meeting by Dorothy Welch.Mr. Wisbey gave a PowerPoint presentation aboutthe Village which was founded in 1966 by John(Jack) L. Wehle who wanted to preserve the craftsmanship of carpenters and home builders of the19th Century. Mr. Wehle arranged to dismantle& transport buildings from around western NewPeter Wisbey and Dorothy WelchYork to a site in Mumford where the buildings wererebuilt, restored and furnished. There are currently 68 buildings at the Village ranging froma simple, one-room log cabin to a grand mansion, the Livingston-Backus house. In addition, there are many 19th Century businesses as well as public and religious buildings.Mr. Wisbey related that Mr. Wehle was a collector of wildlife and sporting art. The John L.Wehle Art Gallery at the Village houses many fine paintings, prints and bronze sculpturesthat he accumulated over his lifetime. The Art Gallery was closed in 2011 for a 2 milliondollar renovation and is scheduled to reopen in 2012 totally redesigned as a modern, energyefficient building.Throughout the year, there are many special events scheduled at the Genesee CountryVillage and Museum. Beginning in March there are maple syrup making demonstrations;in summer there is a Civil War re-enactment and Fiddler’s Fair; in fall there is an Agricultural Society Fair and Spirits of the Past tours and in December there is a Yuletide in theCountry celebration, just to name a few.The Genesee Country Nature Center, featuring woodlands, fields & wetlands, is adjacent tothe Village and is open year-round with trails for hiking and snowshoeing.Mr. Wisbey concluded his presentation by reading passages from a couple of 19th Centuryletters written by a teenage girl visiting the Geneseo area.****************************************Mr. Wisbey has a B.A. in History from St. Lawrence University, a M.A. in History Museum Studies at SUNY Oneontaand a M.A. In Early American Culture from the University of Delaware.
