2-2Compaq ProLiant DL380 Maintenance and Service GuideElectrostatic Discharge InformationA discharge of static electricity can damage static-sensitive devices or microcircuitry. Properpackaging and grounding techniques are necessary precautions to prevent damage. To preventelectrostatic damage, observe the following precautions: Transport products in static-safe containers such as conductive tubes, bags, or boxes. Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at static-free stations. Cover workstations with approved static-dissipating material. Use a wrist strap connectedto the work surface and properly grounded tools and equipment. Keep the work area free of nonconductive materials such as ordinary plastic assembly aidsand foam packing. Always be properly grounded when touching a static-sensitive component or assembly. Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry. Always place drives PCB assembly-side down. Use conductive field service tools.

Removal and Replacement ProceduresSymbols on EquipmentAny product or assembly marked with these symbols indicates that the componentexceeds the recommended weight for one individual to handle safely.25 kg55 lbWARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, observe local occupational health and safety requirements and guidelines for manualmaterial handling.Any surface or area of the equipment marked with these symbols indicates thepresence of a hot surface or hot component.WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury from a hot component, allow the surface tocool before touching it.To reduce the risk of injury from electric shock hazards, do not open this enclosure.WARNING: Any surface or area of the equipment marked with these symbolsindicates the presence of electric shock hazards. The enclosed area contains nooperator serviceable parts.Any RJ-45 receptacle marked with these symbols indicates a Network InterfaceConnection.WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, or damage to the equipment,do not plug telephone or telecommunications connectors into this receptacle.Power supplies or systems marked with these symbols indicate the equipmentis supplied by multiple sources of power.WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment, disconnect power from the server by unplugging all power cords from theelectrical outlet or the server.CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCTThis label or equivalent is located on the surface of your CD-ROM drive. Thislabel indicates that the product is classified as a Class 1 Laser Product.2-3

2-4Compaq ProLiant DL380 Maintenance and Service GuidePreparation ProceduresBefore beginning to remove any serviceable parts, determine whether the part is hot-pluggableor non-hot-pluggable.Hot-Pluggable DeviceHot-pluggable devices in the ProLiant DL380 Server include SCSI hard drives andpower supplies.IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to turn off the server to replace hot-plug devices such as powersupplies, fans, or hard drives when they are not in active use.Non-Hot-Pluggable DeviceIf the part is non-hot-pluggable, the server must be powered down. Non-hot-pluggable partsinclude the processors, all boards, DIMMs, fans, and drive cages.Powering Down the ServerSystem power in ProLiant DL380 Servers does not completely shut off with the front panelPower On/Standby switch. The switch toggles between On and Standby, rather than On and Off.The standby position removes power from most electronics and the drives, but portions of thehot-plug power supply and some internal circuitry remain active. To completely remove allpower from the system, you must disconnect all power cords from the server.WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury from electric shock, remove all powercords to completely disconnect power from the system.WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, ensure that onlyone component is extended at a time. A rack may become unstable if more than onecomponent is extended for any reason.WARNING: Because the rack allows you to stack computer components in a vertical ratherthan a horizontal plane, you must take precautions to provide for rack stability and safety toprotect both personnel and property. Heed all cautions and warnings throughout the installationinstructions that came with the server.WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment: If the server isremoved from the rack for device accessibility, remove the server from the rack and place it ona sturdy table or workbench. Refer to the ProLiant DL380 Server Setup and Installation Guidefor further information on working with racks.CAUTION: The system power in the server does not completely shut off from the frontPower On/Standby switch. Moving the switch from On to Standby leaves some portions of thehot-plug power supply and some internal circuitry active. Disconnect all power cords from theserver to remove all power from the system.

Removal and Replacement ProceduresCAUTION: Electrostatic discharge can damage electronic components. Be sure you areproperly grounded before beginning any installation procedure. For more information, see“Electrostatic Discharge Information” earlier in this chapter.1. Press the Power On/Standby switch to Standby. This places the server in standby mode, thereby disabling the main hot-plug power supply output and providing auxiliary power tothe server. Standby does not completely disable or remove power from the system.2. Verify that the system LED indicator on the front panel, near the Power On/Standbyswitch, is amber and that the fan noise has stopped.3. Disconnect the AC power cord from the AC outlet, then from the server.4. Disconnect all external peripheral devices from the server.5. For stability and safety, properly positioning the server is critical.2-5

2-6Compaq ProLiant DL380 Maintenance and Service GuideRack WarningsWARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment:25 kg55 lb Observe local Occupational Safety requirements and guidelines for heavyequipment handling. Obtain adequate assistance to lift and stabilize the product during installationor removal. Remove all pluggable power supplies and modules to reduce the weight of theproduct. At least two people are needed to safely unload the rack from the pallet. Anempty 42U rack weighs 115 kg (253 lb), is over 2.1 meters (7 ft) tall, and maybecome unstable when being moved on its casters. Do not stand in front of therack as it rolls down the ramp from the pallet; handle it from the sides.Stabilize the server by keeping the unit on the rails.WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment: Always load the heaviest item first and load the rack from the bottom up. Thismakes the rack “bottom-heavy” and helps prevent the rack from becomingunstable. The bottom stabilizers on the equipment must be fully extended. Be sure thatthe equipment is properly supported/braced when installing options and cards. Be sure that the rack is adequately stabilized before extending a componentoutside the rack. Extend only one component at a time. A rack may becomeunstable if more than one component is extended.25 kg55 lbWARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, fire, or damage to the equipment, do notoverload the AC supply branch circuit that provides power to the rack.Server Warnings and PrecautionsWARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the internal systemcomponents to cool before touching them.CAUTION: Protect the server from power fluctuations and temporary interruptions with aregulating uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This device protects the hardware from damagecaused by power surges and voltage spikes and keeps the system in operation during a powerfailure.CAUTION: The ProLiant DL380 Server must always be operated with system unit covers on.Proper cooling will not be achieved if the system unit covers are removed.

Removal and Replacement ProceduresServer CoverTo remove the server cover:1. Complete the preparation procedures. See “Powering Down the Server” earlier in thischapter.2. Loosen the three captive thumbscrews on the rack-mount bezel .3.
