I still have some ofthe plans and will make them available at 4 each. The November meeting of the Saturday MorningFurniture Makers Group will be held at John Twedt’sshop, 2546 NW 84th Ave., Ankeny, IA. I spent sometime going around to the group at the Septembermeeting and got some suggestions for topics. Thetopics that will be demonstrated/discussed will be:-Miter joint on the shaper-Miter joint on the table saw-The box joint on the table saw-Line and berry, mostly line-Steps needed to install the keyway like in Nakashima furniture. Please joint us November 17th at 9:30 AM. If youneed to leave early then try to arrive late. There is abig driveway and room to park on the lawn. Hope tosee you then!Club Community ServiceOn Saturday October 6th, members Eugene Harms,Frank Waterman and Jamie Spellman traveled toCamp Mitigwa, a Boy Scout camp 40 miles Northwest of Des Moines. There were various activities forCub Scouts throughout the day. Eugene, Frank andJamie helped with the woodworking event.Outside a covered tent was set up over 4 picnic tables. The cub scouts with their parents could pick from oneof 3 projects to complete. The projects were a birdhouse, a tool tote and a bird feeder. The projects andtools were supplied by the camp. The event kicked offat 9AM and at 9:10 every available seat at the picnictables was full and stayed that way until the eventended at 4 pm.5Brad PrestonEventually the supplies for the birdhouse andtool tote were exhausted but the supplies for thebird feeders held out. All parts were precut andthe Cub Scouts with their parents had to figureout how the parts went together and nail them.At times there were three dozen or so hammersall pounding at the same time. The weather was acool and a damp 50 degrees, but the Cub Scoutswere universally excited about the projectsand very patient. Many of them were holding ahammer for the first time. One small girl (CubScouts are both boys and girls) after successfullyhammering a nail yelled “I LOVE TO BUILDTHINGS!” The woodworking members returnedsafely to Des Moines even though at least one ofthe members had a thumb that was a little flatterthen the start of the day.Susan Sevedge

Checkout the following DVD to guide you throughthe process.Super-Tune a Handplane by ChristopherSchwarz An excellent, visual, detailed instruction how to restore a vintage Stanley/Recordhand plane. The author also goes over set uphints for newer high quality planes from Veritas and Lie Nielson. The Woodwright’s Shop: A Practical Guideto Traditional Woodcraft by Roy UnderhillMore than 330 photographs illustrate historical information on traditional woodworkingand detailed introductions to specific tasks, projects, and techniques, from tree felling totimberframe construction. Underhill is a very good6Tom Brumbackwriter. He’s descriptive, clear & concise whetherhe’s describing a bark pattern or a how-to project.Yet, at the same time, he takes time to go beyondthe necessities & provide tidbits that made mewant to read beyond his books. Often these arehistorical (e.g. Thomas Jefferson’s carpenter) oralternate methods to try. This book is a good reference for any carpenter, history buff or writer. Forthe carpenter today, with all the power tools, itshows methods that are still valid & often forgotten in the mass of machines & paint-by-numberinstructions. Historically, he’s a gold mine. Hehelped rebuild Colonial Williamsburg & is wellknown for his attention to authenticity. Writerscan learn how it was really done before the invention of electricity and what kind of trees and woodwere available in an old growth forest. Most getit wrong. There are a number of projects outlinedin this book, both practical & fun. It assumes youhave some knowledge of woodworking, but not alot of tools are needed.Help improve the club’s Library! The library willtake any woodworking books and DVD’s thatare not already in our library collection. Members wishing to make contributions to the libraryshould contact the Librarian. Upon request, a labelbearing the donor’s name can be placed on thedonated items. If you have suggestions on itemsto add to the Library and Resource Center, contactthe Librarian.
