Three Bach ChoralesPerformance NotesThese arrangements of THREE BACH CHORALES are intended to provide young bands with highquality material for working on balance, blend, and intonation, in a flexible format.Bach’s four part writing has been left intact - only the keys have been changed, to the commonlyused young band keys of Concert B flat and E flat.A percussion part is provided, although we would be more comfortable if you did not use it. It isthere in case you have percussionists who are unable to play mallets and would cause problems ifthey had nothing to do. The part should be played very softly it is used.In the score the parts are labeled according to which of the four harmony parts each instrument isplaying. That way, it is easy for the conductor to see at a glance which instruments have the samepart.Bach did not always follow the voice leading rules that many of us learned in Harmony 101. Thereare a few awkward leaps (even tritones!) in a some spots (for instance, measures 9 and 10 in Part 3of #93). Brass players who may struggle a bit with this should be helped by the fact that there arewoodwind instruments who have the same part. Rehearsing the entire group that has the same parttogether will help the brass players with the awkward jumps.Generally, the parts are distributed as follows:Part 1 - flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, malletsPart 2 - clarinet, alto sax, trumpetPart 3 - clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, horn, trombone, baritonePart 4 - bass clarinet, baritone sax, trombone, baritone, tubaThe oboe part is the same as the mallet part.Note that, due to range considerations, the part distribution is not exactly the same in all threechorales. The scores reflect this. On the student parts, the following adjustments have been made.Clarinet Part 3 - no part for #342. Part 2 has been substituted on the Part 3 page.Alto Sax Part 3 - no part for #342. Part 2 has been substituted on the Part 3 page.Horn - moves to Part 4 for two measures of #308 (noted on part).Trombone/Baritone Part 3 - no part for #308. Part 4 has been substituted.Note - dynamics and tempo variations have not been stipulated. Conductors should feel free to addexpressive elements as they see fit.

Bach himself. Many of Bach's chorales are harmoniza-tions by Bach of pre-existing melodies (not by Bach) and certain melodies (by Bach or otherwise) form the basis of multiple chorales with different harmonizations. We extend this harmonization task to the completion of chorales for a wider number and type of given parts. Let

Bach used these four-part chorales in larger works, such as cantatas or oratorios. Today, 371 of these chorale harmonizations still survive. What these chorales have provided for music theorists and historians is a large data-set of music from the Baroque era

Bach’s vocal chorales have had in harmony curricula ever since C. P. E. Bach’s first publication of them in 1765.5 The aim of this article is to take the first steps in developing a curriculum centered around the keyboard chorale that can replace our current focus on Bach’s vocal chorales.
