Join in andbe part of the world’s largestdemonstration of support foraction on climate change.The celebrations have grown each year,spreading round the world, with a record178 countries taking part last year.Iconic landmarks across the UK switched outtheir lights, from Big Ben and BuckinghamPalace, to Brighton Pier and Edinburgh Castle.And this year is set to be the biggest yet as it’sthe 10 year anniversary of Earth Hour. You canbe part of it.2016 was the hottest year on record and a newhigh for the third year in a row. That means 16of the 17 hottest years on record will have beenthis century.With our new Prime Minister announcingthat she is still committed to keeping climateaction a priority, it’s now more importantthan ever to show your support for action onclimate change by taking part in Earth Hourand ensuring that those promises are turnedinto action.This inspiration pack offers lots of ideas tohelp you create your perfect Earth Hour. Six simple stepsto making your Earth Hour matterONE25fourGet the date inpeople’s diariesTWONo need to worry about whenyou’re going to hold your EarthHour event. This year it’s Saturday25 March, between 8.30 and9.30pm (although you can ofcourse start earlier or end later tosuit your plans). But do tell peopleto hold that date as early possible,to make sure lots of guests attendyour event.Build fundraisinginto your eventWhether your event is big or small,there are many different ways youcould raise money to support ourwork in tackling climate change.Perhaps you could ask for donationsfor any tasty treats you’ve cookedup, forfeit those who use technologyduring Earth Hour or ask people todonate during the event by text oronline. Or why not trysomething different? Have a pot luck mealwhere everyone brings a dish, or a movingdinner where you have one course at eachhouse. makE your Earth Hour matter for future generationsWith over 80% of the peoplewho took part in last year’sEarth Hour feeling inspiredto do more to protect ourplanet, Earth Hour offers agreat opportunity for you, yourfamily and your friends to takesome time out and reflect onwhat action you can take toprotect our planet for futuregenerations. Here are our topsuggestions of what you can do– positive steps we’d love you toencourage your guests to do atyour event.Add yournameThrow lessstuff awayto show yoursupport foraction onclimate changeat wwf.org.uk/EHtakepartwhich means recycling asmuch as you can, putting leftover food ina compost bin and trying to sell or giveaway possessions you don’t want, ratherthan sending them to a landfill site.Switch off lightsand other electric appliances whenyou’re not using them. Lightingaccounts for 18% of a typicalhousehold’s electricity bill. Youcan significantly cut your lightingbill and energy use by switching offlights when you don’t need them andfitting energy-saving light bulbs.Become a WWF memberand you’ll be supporting our vital work toprotect the planet for future generations.With your help we can protect some of theworld’s most iconic and vulnerable animals,places and people, and tackle some of ourbiggest threats like climate change.Buysustainably,Avoidusing plasticcarrier bags,or if you have to, make surethey’re biodegradable.Get yourself a few strong,reusable and stylish bagsfrom wwf.org.uk/shopwe can all consciously tryto buy less. But we canalso make simple changesto our shopping patternsand use our purchasingpower to support ecofriendly products, whichare less damaging to theenvironment.Drop thetemperature inyour home,as this can save you money onyour heating bills and reduceyour household carbon dioxideemissions.BuysecondhandUse your car less,either by walking more, getting onyour bike or taking public transport.to prevent items going tolandfill, reduce the amountof materials being used andhelping to save you moneyat the same time.Reduce yourwaterconsumptionby having shorter showers rather thanbaths and turning off the tap when youbrush your teeth.
