That was when he moved from Florida and settled in St. Joseph, Missouri. Prior to that he had quilted a little, embroidered, knittedand crafted. He rediscovered his love of quilting, found wonderful quiltshops and the rest is history.Carl started to design quilts because he wanted to create somethingthat no one else had done. He wanted to be original. After seeing hisquilts at quilt shows, people began asking if patterns were available, sohe decided to begin his own quilt pattern company - 3 Dog DesignCompany. He has published patterns for purchase using the brand. One day while looking at the LeMoyne Star block, he knew there hadto be something that he could do to make it more interesting. The ideakind of hit. It was the merging together of the Rail Fence block with theLeMoyne Star block. When he put them together, he came up with theStars ‗N Strips Block. He has added several patterns and is in the currentissue of Fons and Porter Love of Quilting with Swallows of Capistranopattern. His lecture will be Color 101 which will include a trunk show. Hisworkshop will be Spinning Stars. This workshop will be great, with noY-seams to worry about!

President’s Notesby Mayleen VinsonWhat’s a Luddite, Stealth Member, Hermit DoingServing as Guild President?!?I‘ve got to ask myself the same question. Actually, Ido know why - my love of quilts is definitely the onlything which will motivate me to get up in front of agroup!I love color, fabric, history, quilts and I especiallylove to hear stories about why people make quilts. Quilting is my stress reliever, emotion lifter, and it challengesme. Quilting provides me with instant connections and Ican and have talked to just about anyone anywhere aboutquilts. In my stealth member days, I‘d zip in and zip out ofguild meetings, I had (still do have) fabric to get back to!My very messy sewing room is my hermit comfort zonewhich, by the way, will NEVER be on the quilt roomtour. Its my happy place. So what‘s a Luddite? I‘ll giveyou a hint, its not a religious denomination, ha. You‘llhave to look it up in a dictionary.New PQG Board MembersWe have had two board resignations since our boardelection in August. The following guild members agreedto serve and the board has voted them into office:- Cheryl Jacklovich is our new Advertising Chair. Please contact her about any ads you wish to place in thenewsletter.- Donna Bradbury will be taking over as Vice President from Peggy Lawless who resigned due to her husband‘s health concerns.Lynette OliphantPQG Board Secretary2015 PQG ChallengeBy Nila AlbrechtThe PQGchallenge is here. The kits will be for sale at the guild meeting.Join in and take the challenge! So this year, I‘m going to learn to like technology andlearn to enjoy being on stage. I‘m going to learn I can‘tjust zip in and zip out, a president‘s day at guild is a longone. I‘m looking forward to serving you as guild president and getting to know you and your quilts!See you at guild, MayleenDonations WantedDouble-knit fabric at least ¾-yard lengths for makingbags for Wichita Children's Home. I can pick up the fabric at your home.Contact Rose Marie Mintz at 316-788-3547.Thank you for your donation!Next Meeting - October 142Prairie Quilt Guild

Library LinesI love the excitement of starting something new.(That might help to explain why I have so many unfinished projects.) I want to start something new, even whenI haven‘t finished what I‘m currently working on. Anyway, I am excited to start this year in the library. It‘sthrilling to contemplate what the year will bring—all thenew books! Tami and I have some ideas for startingsomething in the library - you‘ll have to come by at themeeting and check out what we have in store for you thisyear.Because this is the beginning of Prairie Quilt Guild‘syear (2014-2015), I think this is a good time to review thelibrary‘s policies and procedures and to remind you ofwhat all is available.WHAT WE HAVE Over 1,800 volumes (quilt-related Fiction and Non-fiction). Four quilt-related magazine subscriptions Quilt-related DVDs One game (you guessed it; quilt-related!) Online catalog—located on the guild‘s website; justclick on the library button on the left side of the page Paper listing of all holdings located in the library nextto the computer, which is also available for you to useat the meetingsTo use these items, you simply need to follow theseoutlined procedures:Now you can use Word on your computer to do thesame thing. Her instructions sound easy to follow so, ifyou are interested in designing your own quilts, this maybe an article that you will want to read.Come by the library and check out the guild‘s copy ofthe magazine. I know I said that I like to start somethingnew, but I‘m not sure I‘m up for starting on the designingaspect yet. If you try Debbie‘s method on Word, let meknow if it is as simple as it seems.By Olivia JacobsCares and ConcernsContact Cindy Stacey at 316-207-7229 or e-mailpshugs@hotmail.com if you know of any members whoneed to be added to this list.Sandy BrantleyLynda FichterSanday HatcherSharon HuddlestonLeslie LanePeggy LawlessDonna MeaseRoberta PearsonBrenda PfortmillerPat RosingIllnessHusband SurgeryAuto AccidentHusband IllHeart CathHusband IllFather Passed AwayPassed AwayDaughter-in-Law Passed AwayHusband Passed Away Show a current membership card Have no outstanding obligations Return all borrowed items at the next monthly meeting(there is a 1.00 fine per item, per month)If we have missed anyone experiencing health issuesor bereavement, please know that we are concerned, andforgive us the oversight. Browse our collection online or on the carts at themeeting (titles are arranged alphabetically)As I was processing some materials to add to our collection, I read an article in the October/November 2014issue of Quilter’s Newsletter that you may be interested inreading. The article is entitled, ―My Word‖ by DebbieCaffrey. She gives instructions on how to use MicrosoftWord to draw and design quilts. QuiltTechSince I‘m a Luddite, it mayseem a little odd that I‘m writingthis first quilt technology articlebut I‘ve learned to let technology help me quilt! My favorite quilting tech itemis Robert Kaufman‘s ―TheQuilter‘s Little Helper – Essential Quilting Calculator‖ app onmy iPhone. (Android versionalso available) For years, ShirleyBinder would figure out howmuch backing I needed but, aftershe sold her shop, I realized how math challenged I amand quickly found this app.Prison QuiltersMany of our members have donated fabric to thequilting project at the El Dorado Correction Facility andnow that project has grown to include the Oswego location as well. They have completed over 100 quilts thatwill be given to the Red Cross as comfort quilts for winterdisasters. Its free to download and has eight different calculators. I use the Backing and Batting Calculator and theBinding Calculator the most. After entering the width offabric and quilt dimensions, the calculator determines theamount of yardage I need for backing. I confess I alsodraw it out on paper to see if I can reduce the amount offabric needed by piecing the backing. The Binding Calculator will compute for both bias and regular binding.I almost always have my phone with me so if I unexpectedly find fabric I need, I can use my calculator app tofigure out how much fabric to purchase. Who am I kidding? I use the calculators on a regular basis and not justwhen I ―unexpectedly‖ find fabric!Mayleen VinsonGuild members will be sharing their favorite quiltingtechnology with us throughout the year in this column.6The population at the prisons are creating other crafts, including wheat weaving, but the quilting allows them toalso donate their efforts to a worthwhile charity. Thisproject is a win-win for all who are involved. Watch foran article in the Wichita Eagle in the future.Prairie Quilt Guild
