Dear Girl Scouts,GIRL SCOUT MISSIONGirl Scouting builds girls ofcourage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.GIRL SCOUT PROMISEOn my honor, I will try:To serve God* and my country,To help people at all times,And to live by the Girl Scout Law.GIRL SCOUT LAWI will do my best to behonest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, andresponsible for what I say and do,and torespect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, andbe a sister to every Girl Scout.* You may substitute the word God in accordance withyour own spiritual beliefs. As Girl Scouts, you have lots of opportunities to explore five exciting areas ofprogramming, and as you do, you’ll discover more of what you love, more of whatexcites you, more of what brings you joy! You’ll also discover your innerG.I.R.L.! Are you more of a Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker,or Leader? The 2019-2020 GSSNE Program Guide is a greatresource to help plan where YOU want to go on yourGirl Scout adventure. When looking at my sash from when I was growing up asa Girl Scout, I discovered that most everything I love doingtoday, I first did in the Girl Scouts! My love of spending timeoutdoors, traveling, and meeting people all around the worldstarted with Girl Scouts. I’ll admit that I wish growing up I hadknown more about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). I love to solve problems, but I never knew that’s whatscientists and engineers work towards every day! Today in Girl Scouting there are lotsof opportunities for you to learn about STEM—and what excites you!As a young Girl Scout, I went on a two-week trip throughout New England. I learnedso much and had so much fun exploring parts of the northeast that I had never beento. We camped every night in some of the most beautiful places and I loved fallingasleep listening to the babbling brooks and rivers along which we pitched our tents.Fast forward to a few years ago when I camped in beautiful Glacier National Park inMontana, and yes, you guessed it, pitched my tent right next to the water, this timebeautiful Lake McDonald! Girl Scouting opened my eyes to the beauty of the outdoorsand I am so grateful! Here are a few of my favorite activities included in this Program Guide that I hopewill open your eyes to what you love: Join new Daisy Girl Scout friends while you find the “G” in G.I.R.L. as everyGo-getter Daisy Girl Scout explores the outdoors at our Daisy Outdoor Journey! Explore the “I” in G.I.R.L. with our Innovation Badge Series for Brownies, Juniors,Cadettes, and Seniors or the Mechanical Engineering Program for Daisies andBrownies. Courageous enough to live the “R” in G.I.R.L.? Come with your Daisy Girl Scoutfriends to Buttonwood Park Zoo for their Animal Twilight Tour or take a sneak peekinto your potential future at the Girl of the Future STEM Career Day where Daisies,Brownies, and Juniors can explore an array of potential awesome jobs! Make an impact in your community by earning your Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, orGold Award. Find in your heart the issues that matter to you and then create asolution to make a long-lasting change. Get started thinking about these awardsby first participating in the Citizen Badge Series for Cadettes, Seniors, andAmbassadors. This is where you’ll become the “L” in G.I.R.L.!I hope you try something new this year and discover a skill or passion that will staywith you forever. Every activity in this guide, along with everything you do in yourtroop will unleash your Go-getter spirit that will energize you to take advantage ofevery opportunity your world has to offer! The options for adventure are endless, andthey’re all up to you!Wishing you a year of adventure, fun, and self-discovery,Pam HylandCEO, Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England2

Girl Scouts offers the best leadership development experience for girls inthe world—one that is defined with, by, and for girls.Girl Scouts unleashes the G.I.R.L (Go-getter, Innovator,Risk-taker, Leader)TM in every girl, preparing her fora lifetime of leadership—from taking a nighttimehike under the stars to accepting a mission on theInternational Space Station; from lobbying the citycouncil with her troop to holding a seat in Congress;from running her own cookie business today to tacklingcybersecurity tomorrow.results. It is based on time-tested methods and researchbacked programming that helps girls take the lead—intheir own lives and in the world. The inclusive, all-female environment of a Girl Scouttroop creates a safe space where girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles, andjust be themselves. Our Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a one-of-a-kindleadership development program for girls, with provenFive Important Ways Girls Benefitby Participating in Girl Scouts:STRONG SENSE OF SELFGirls have confidence in themselves and theirabilities, and form positive identities.POSITIVE VALUESGirls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, andshow concern for others.CHALLENGE SEEKINGGirls take appropriate risks, try things even if theymight fail, and learn from mistakes.HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPSGirls develop and maintain healthy relationshipsby communicating their feelings directly andresolving conflicts constructively.COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVINGGirls desire to contribute to the world inpurposeful and meaningful ways, learn how toidentify problems in the community, and create“action plans” to solve them. Why do these fiveoutcomes matter? When girls exhibit these attitudesand skills, they become responsible, productive, caring, and engagedcitizens. Studies show that thedevelopment of attitudes, behaviors, and skills like confidence, conflictresolution, and problem solvingare critical to well-being and rivalacademic and technical skills in theircapacity to predict long-term positivelife outcomes.GIRL SCOUTS OF SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND PROGRAM GUIDE1

Growing with Girl ScoutsDid you know Girl Scouts are more likely than other girls to get excellentgrades, graduate from high school and college, and to expect a great future forthemselves? Through Girl Scouts, your daughter will grow in ways that changeeverything about the way she holds herself, the way she expresses herself, and how big she dreams. This kind of growth is the most important outcomeof her Girl Scout experience and what will help her harness her potential andlive her best life.Although some youth-oriented organizations pride themselves on handingout medals and awards to boost a child’s sense of self, at Girl Scouts webelieve in education over decoration. By that, we mean that our programcomprises meaningful experiences that have been proven to teach girlsabout themselves and their own potential in their schools, communities, andsociety at large. When your girl takes part in Girl Scouting, she’s following in the footsteps ofnumerous female world leaders, astronauts, inventors, entrepreneurs, and artists. Alongside caring mentors and strong role models, everything aGirl Scout does centers around STEM, the outdoors, developmentof life skills, and entrepreneurship, and is designed to meet herwhere she is now and to grow along with her.Whether she’s building a robotic arm, codingher first app, or packing for her first hike, aGirl Scout has an exciting array of choices to suither interests at every age.Last summer, Girl Scouts of the USA(GSUSA) rolled out 30 new badges and twonew Journeys! Event and Program EtiquetteGSSNE offers council-sponsored programs and events fortroops and girls. These events bring together girls fromacross three states to enjoy an opportunity that they mightnot be able to create on their own. Please note that eachevent has a registration deadline and that some eventsmay fill before this date. Don’t worry, program waitlists areavailable! Full payment will reserve your Girl Scout’s spot onthe waitlist; you’ll be notified if a space becomes available inthe program, and you will be fully reimbursed for fees paid ifa space does not become available for your Girl Scout. Here are some tips and tricks for proper event andprogram etiquette: Registration closes two weeks prior to program date.Register early to make sure you don’t miss out on the fun! Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-servedbasis. We cannot hold a space without payment. All programs have a minimum attendance requirementand may be canceled if there is low enrollment. Have the girls plan. Show them this guide or visit the“Events” tab on the gssne.org homepage. Let girls and their families know that individual girls withan adult may attend most events. Questions about registering should be directed to If you have special needs or specific questions aboutevent programming, contact customercare@gssne.org. Please be aware that programming often isn’t fine-tuneduntil the registration deadline, when we know how manygirls to expect. Bring only those who registered for an event to an event. Some sites are very limited in space. Please don’t assumewe can just “add one more.” Be prepared. Be sure to have directions to the site andplan on arriving with enough time to walk to check-in.Double check that you have what you need for the day. Please be sure to dress appropriately. Wear your Girl Scoutuniform and check the weather. Your Welcome Letter willhave more information on appropriate attire. Adults: It’s great to meet and network! If you’d like tohave conversations, ask the facilitator if it’s OK if you stepoutside. Conversations can be distracting to the girls, and we want them to have the most fulfilling programexperiences. Whether it is a GSSNE staff member, volunteer, orcommunity partner, whomever is facilitating theprogram loves sharing their skills and experiences withthe girls, and puts a lot of effort into what they do. A“Thank You” is always appreciated.customercare@gssne.org.BADGE VS. PATCH:What's the difference?Patches, sometimes called fun patches, are emblems signifying participating inGirl Scout activity. Patches are placed on theback of the sash or vest. Think of them as ascrapbook of her Girl Scout experience.Badges are official symbols that indicate anincrease in knowledge or skill in a particularsubject. Badges can be earned at every agelevel and are placed on the front of her sashor vest.GIRL SCOUTS OF SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND PROGRAM GUIDE5
