Lecture 2: SolidWorks 1 – Solid Modeling and ManufacturingProfessor Erik Cheever

Remember Wednesdays 7:30-9:30 E5 Wizards in Hicks 212 9/9: Lab 1 due – submitted on moodle page 9/10: Mouse Escape – 4:15 p.m. Arrive about 4:05 in front of Hicks for Ball Drop (if you are able tocome). Choose one person to describe project: from 1 to 3 minutes. Engineering Department Picnic starts at about 4:30 in front of Trotter 9/14: Mouse Escape Report due – submitted on moodle 9/17: Lab 2 due – submitted to moodle Shop class (not required – only if you are interested). Youshould have received an email about it.

The Big PictureThe next 3 weeks we will be exploring CAD (ComputerAided Design) with SolidWorks. You will:1. Design a part and have it printed in plastic.2. Design a part and simulate stresses on it. Wewill build a model and test the accuracy of yourpredictions. This part will be part of a robot youwill build3. Design an assembly of moving parts.Today we’ll talk about some manufacturing techniques, and get a brief introduction to SolidWorks.

Making and Designing Parts Today we will discuss how parts are made, andhow we can design them. We won’t be doing much in terms of makingparts, but if you are really interested take theshop course. Design of parts is largely done with CAD(Computer Aided Design) software. We will use asoftware tool called SolidWorks to do this.

Making parts (2) Additive prototyping(Build up part one layer at a time). Visible Human project does reverse. Human body oneslice at a time. From the NIH VisibleHuman Project http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/visible/mpeg/umd video.mpg

3D Printers (additive prototyping)Powder Deposition1. Print carriage spreads a layer of powder from the feed box to cover thesurface of the build piston.2. Print heads spray binder solution onto loose powder, "printing“ firstcross-sectional view. Remaining loose powder supports part as it isbeing printed.3. After cross-section is printed, build piston is lowered slightly, a newlayer of powder spread over its surface and the next cross sectionalview is printed.4. The process is repeated until the build is complete. From: http://www.rapidprototyping.co.nz/desc.htmAlso sintering.

3D Printers (additive prototyping)Fused Deposition Modeling1. Print carriage lays a melted filament on a single layer (like a hot-gluegun)2. Layer cools and hardens.3. The process is repeated until the build is complete.http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR 1&feature endscreen&v yKHMmKqdI68/desc.htm

Designing parts ‐ SolidWorks Creating parts with SolidWorks makes theprocess a very methodical one (as opposed todrawing by hand). Keep in mind that parts of the drawing canhave explicit relationships that makesreusing/rescaling the part easier. Examples of SolidWorks designed parts. SolidWorks demo. . .

saved, the documents are not accessible in earlier releases of the SolidWorks software. Converting Older SolidWorks Files to SolidWorks 2001 Because of changes to the SolidWorks files with the development of SolidWorks 2001, opening a SolidWorks document from an earlier release may take more time than you are used to experiencing.

Establish a SOLIDWORKS session. Comprehend the SOLIDWORKS 2018 User Interface. Recognize the default Reference Planes in the FeatureManager. Open a new and existing SOLIDWORKS part. Utilize SOLIDWORKS Help and SOLIDWORKS Tutorials. Zoom, rotate and maneuver a three button mouse in the SOLIDWORKS Graphics window.

SOLIDWORKS HARDWARE RECOMMENDATIONS Below is a summary of key components of an ideal SOLIDWORKS PC, all of this document is important but if you only . From SOLIDWORKS 2015 SOLIDWORKS is 64Bit Only64Bit Only64Bit Only, also SOLIDWORKS 2014 onwards will NOT NOTNOT install on Vista or XP.

The following commands within the Autodesk VaultPro 2015 client are not supported for SolidWorks files: Copy Design. SolidWorks offers the own functionality 'Save As Copy' Update preview If SolidWorks is configured as the default viewer in Microsoft Windows for SolidWorks files, SolidWorks will be launched when using the View feature of VaultPro.
