RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION IN THE MIDWEST REGIONThis year we wish to acknowledge Mrs Lynda Jolliffe, EducationAssistant. Lynda has been an integral part of our students’ lives inEarly Childhood for many years now. She goes above and beyond herrole and is thoroughly invested in supporting and guiding students toachieve their potential. She is very dedicated and her high level ofenergy as well as experience in the K and PP classes is valued verymuch by staff and parent/carers alike.Lynda, along with staff from Midwest schools will be acknowledged ina Recognising Excellence in Education in the Midwest Region threepublication in the December 4 Midwest Times that Karin Van Dongen,Principal of Beachlands PS and myself have coordinated on behalf ofMidwest Schools. Here is a message from our Regional Executive Director, Steve Watson which I think exemplifieswhat our schools are about.“The Midwest Education Region is full of remarkable educators, administrators, support staff, volunteers, and community partners dedicated to making sure that every student can engage in the highest qualityeducation. To be part of a school is not without challenges and this year, as with others, has required many Midwestschool leaders, teachers and support staff to go to extraordinary lengths to support students, families andtheir colleagues. The region is very fortunate to have four highly effective education networks and much of the support thatschool leaders contribute and receive is a direct result of their connection to a network of schools. The impressive student results which includes overall progress across the majority of NAPLAN domains andyear levels and is a testimony to the collective effort of schools and the success of the education networks. But what really gets every teacher, school leader and support staff member to work each day is much morethan those impressive NAPLAN results. They know the work of their school contributes so much more totheir community and in ways that can’t be measured.A sense of belonging and connection to a school is lifelong. There is nothing more rewarding as aneducator to see a student return as an adult and positively reflect on their time at the school. As educatorswe sometimes have to wait awhile before that kind of recognition comes around. To be part of a school and the education journey of a child is without doubt one of life’s privileges and itdoesn’t matter what your role, they all count.”Steven Watson, Regional Executive Director, Midwest Schools.CLASS STRUCTURES FOR 2020 and PARENT REQUESTSIt is at this time of year we work on the long process of looking at our current and anticipatedenrolments in order to determine what class structure options we have in 2020. Whether it's anxiety around school, separation from a parent, exams, a performance, sports, the dentist, orthe type that isn't connected to anything in particular, 'Hey Warrior'empowers kids with the information they need to feel stronger, braver, calmer, more able to manage their anxiety and thrive. She has a lovely video (click on the link below) titled Hey Warrior – Anxiety Explained, KidsEmpowered that you can view. She also has a book of the same title “Hey Warrior” - A book for kidsabout anxiety.Understanding where anxiety comes from, and why it feels the way it does is a powerful step in turninganxiety he-first-time-can-stir-anxiet/775582152641870/What to Do (and Not Do) When Children Are AnxiousHow to respect feelings without empowering fears by Clark Goldstein, PhD1. The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety, but to help a child manage it.2. Don’t avoid things just because they make a child anxious3. Express positive—but realistic—expectations.4. Respect their feelings, but don’t empower them.5. Don’t ask leading questions.6. Don’t reinforce the child’s fears.7. Encourage the child to tolerate their anxiety.8. Try to keep the anticipatory period short.9. Think things through with the child.10. Try to model healthy ways of handling anxiety.

Tackling back-to-school anxietyThe hot, sticky weather has reached its sweaty peak and you’re being bombarded with stationeryand uniform adverts. It can only mean one thing: the holidays are almost over and it’s time to headback to school.Starting a new school year can be an exciting time, but also an anxious one. Lots of kids – and theirparents – feel nervous in the buildup to their first day back. This is really common, but that doesn’tmake it any less stressful! Having your child attend school for the first time or starting a new schoolcan create even more anxiety.Preparation is key to dealing with situations where there are lots of unknowns. The more things feelfamiliar and controlled, the more your child or young person can relax and feel confident aboutwhat’s happening. Here are some strategies and tips to make the transition back to school a positive experience.(Click on the link above to access the Beyond Blue website)Starting school for the first time?Sending your little one off to ‘big school’ can be daunting – for parents as much as kids.As well as the tips for primary school children above, you could try some of the followingstrategies:1. Have a few ‘dry runs’ of the trip to and from school so your child is familiar with the routeand what to expect.2. Set up some playdates in the holidays with local kids who are also starting school so theysee some familiar faces on day one.3. Visit the school – check out the playground, find their classroom and have a wander roundso they can get used to where things are.4. Invent a fun routine to make saying goodbye a bit easier – try a high-five, bear hug or secrethandshake.5. Talk positively about the day ahead on the way to school and remind your child whereyou’ll be at pick-up time.6. Drawn-out goodbyes can be upsetting, especially if other kids are getting emotional. Onceyour child is settled in their classroom, give them some final positive reassurance and beat ahasty retreat.7. Try to limit other activities during the first few weeks – the transition to school can be tiringand kids need down time.8. Schedule a family celebration or a Skype call from grandparents on the weekend to mark themilestone – after all, starting school is a pretty big deal! And finally, check your own behaviour. The start of the school year can be a nervous timefor parents as much as kids, but it’s important to try and keep your own anxiety levels undercontrol. The more you can stay calm and present school as a fun, positive experience – the better.RegardsJacqui Quartermaine, Principal
