From the PresidentMy two years as President of the Shaker Schools Foundationhave reminded me of the factors that make Shaker Heightsa remarkable place to live: ours is a caring and generouscommunity that values its public school system; the ShakerHeights City Schools offer an exceptional education to everychild who is enrolled; our teachers, administrators, and staffare a dedicated group of talented individuals; our studentsare capable of greatness.Furthermore, the 32-year-old Shaker Schools Foundationis an extraordinary resource for our schools and ourcommunity. I have enjoyed working with our trustees,who so generously share their time, intelligence, andcontributions to ensure that the Foundation upholds itsmission to enrich the educational experiences of Shaker’sstudents.I am pleased to report that the Foundation continues togrow in stature and capacity. Our Strategic Plan providesguidance, our Board provides leadership, and our loyaldonors provide the means to fulfill our mission. Weexperienced growth during the 2013 fiscal year, and ourindependent audit was clean. The Annual Fund exceeded 123,000, and we contained our operating expenses andended with a surplus for the fourth consecutive year. FromJuly 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013, we focused on four broadgoals: raise permanent, unrestricted endowment; increasethe number of alumni donors; increase the Foundation’svisibility in the community; and increase the number ofdonors in Northeast Ohio. kertionShadahools FounScProvides OpportunityDuring fiscal year 2013, the Foundation wasinvolved in a number of activities in supportof its mission to provide resources to enrichthe educational experience of students ofthe Shaker Heights City School District.And, we upheld our Strategic Plan bycontinuing to attract permanent unrestrictedendowment, increasing the Foundation’svisibility in the community, serving ouralumni, and encouraging a growing numberof Northeast Ohioans to donate. A special event on October 2, 2012, AnEvening with David Pogue, supportedthe Legacy Fund. Legacy Societymembers were invited at no charge tothis ticketed presentation, and they alsoattended a post-event reception with Mr.Pogue. As part of the Centennial of the City ofShaker Heights, the Foundation hostedDr. Michael Roizen on October 16, 2012in a program that was free and open tothe public. The Foundation introduced an onlinedonation option in November 2012. On March 5, 2013, the Foundationhosted a special percussion concertthat featured Shaker graduates, LukeRinderknecht and Dinesh Joseph,and two other professional musicians.Proceeds from the evening added 3,400 to the Charlotte BravermanMusic Enrichment Fund. The Marketing Committee madearrangements to create a display at VanAken Shopping Center. Posters aboutthe Foundation’s activities, including ourCorporate Sponsors, were in place fromApril through mid-June of 2013. Also as part of the Centennialcelebrations for the city and schooldistrict, the Foundation partneredwith the Band Boosters to help funda commission by P. A. A second, three-week SummerAcademy was offered in summer 2013 tothe students who attended in 2012. The Foundation partnered with theDistrict to upgrade the projector andsoftware in the planetarium. Our shareof the expenses was 135,000.
