3/28/2016RotaryGrams for March 23, 2016 (Mar 23, 2016)speaker as he brings a very important message that indeedcould be life changing. Amen. by Judy KelfstromPROGRAM REVIEWMarch 16, 2016"Zika Virus The Latest ThreatPosed by Mosquitoes"Bart Foster, Ph.D.Bill Clark Pest Control, Inc.by Ted MoorOur guest this week was Bart Foster who has his doctorate inentomology from Texas A&M. Bart grew up inMadisonville, Texas on his family’s farm raising horses andcattle. Now he is married and has four children, who mostlikely (due to a family genetic disorder) will want to go toTexas A&M.Dr. Foster started off his presentation by reading a documentfrom Memphis, Tennessee that was written in 1878. Thearticle was about the devastation caused by an outbreak ofyellow fever (which is transmitted by mosquitoes). In thatoutbreak over 759 people died, which accounted for 1/5 ofthe city’s population. Back then, outbreaks such as thesewere common, but even today, 2,000,000 to 3,000,000fatalities occur each year due to diseases caused bymosquitoes and other insects. Fortunately for us, the UnitedStates is spared from most of these outbreaks.Dr. Foster pointed out that there are different types ofmosquito borne illnesses. In cases such as malaria, themosquito infects an individual, but then that individual is notcapable of spreading the disease further. In other instances(such as bird flu and the Zika virus) an infected View/da7f90ca 3e82 4e63 ac18 039178c837d97/8

3/28/2016RotaryGrams for March 23, 2016 (Mar 23, 2016)can bite a human and then that human can spread the diseaseto other humans. In addition, the disease can be transmittedfrom an infected individual to a non infected mosquito. Themosquito will then become infected and spread the diseasefurther. This type of disease spreads much more rapidly. The Zika virus originally started in monkeys in Uganda. Thevirus was named after the Zika forest where these monkeyslived. Ultimately, humans became infected in Africa and thevirus then spread to South America and Central America.Although the virus is not actively in the United States, Dr.Foster believes the virus will spread to the US within thenext 12 months.Currently, there is no treatment for the Zika virus, butscientists have had a lot of experience developing vaccinesfor other mosquito borne viruses and believe that experiencewill shorten the time necessary to develop an effectiveremedy. This virus can cause miscarriages, microcephaly(which results in abnormal brain development in a fetus) andimpaired vision. Given that there is no vaccine, it’s evenmore important for everyone to eliminate mosquito breedingsites such as low spots that have standing water, wear insectrepellent that contains DEET, and wear long pants and longsleeve shirts when mosquitoes are present. (My personalplan of action to avoid the Zika virus is to stay inside, drinkbeer, eat chocolate and watch TV, until there is a cure forthis dreadful disease.)*******ROTARY OFFICE CLOSEDThe Rotary Office will be closedon Friday, March 25.Please leave a phone message orsend an email which will bereturned as soon as possible.
