Tonight, sunset will be at 6pm, the sun is shining, the weather is nice, andpeople are even wearing light jackets. Except for my neighbor who is out and aboutin cargo shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. Definitely an optimist. But that is what we are like here in north and central Alberta, B.C. and Yellowknife. We look for the best. And I am seeing that all around our great Lions District as Itravel and meet with you. As of this morning, for the fourth month in a row, ourDistrict is showing positive membership growth. This is a testament to all your hardwork in your communities and clubs. It reflects the excellent job you are doingbringing in new members and giving them something meaningful to do. And itreflects how well you are accepting not just the new members, but the new ideas andmethods they are bringing to your club and your service to your communities. It isnever easy when you bring in new voices and ideas. It can be hard work foreveryone both new and old members to mesh together those differing ideas andcultures (and yes, every club has its own club culture). But you are doing it. And forthat I thank you. It is part of what makes our organization so great. It is a largereason why Lions has become and will remain the largest and most responsiveservice organization in the world. We are now entering the spring season and that is a period of rebirth. We are electingour new executives for our clubs, working on new projects, and getting ready for theupcoming Lions years. So, I would ask you to ensure that your reporting is up to date, both for membership, service and most importantly of all, your new executive.Remember, even if your executive is not changing, we still need you to report yourofficers. At 11pm MDT on June 30, any club that has not reported their new club officerwill lose access to MyLCI. You will not be able to report the officers in July, you will notget those all-important communications from Lions about things that are happening.Even your DG will only have restricted access.Continued next pageSIGNIFICANT EVENTS / DATES to REMEMBERpage2020LERF LCIF Grant Update .2Fund for Mental Health .3Lions going green 4Up-coming Fundraisers. 5C-1 Service Co-ordinator 6In Memoriam . 7MDC Registration form .8&9Project Pride order form 10&11LCI Payments for Canada 12Campaign 100 Pledge 13Dist. It only takes a few minutes to report your newexecutive. Please take that time. It helps us help you.Until next month, I wish you all the success youdeserve going forward in service. And I wish you andyour families good health and good weather!LERF Update – LCIF Matching GrantDonna Bong and her team of technicians at the Eye Institute ofAlberta are currently testing the most-advanced ultra-wideimaging camera – the CLARUS 700. This leading-edge equipmenttakes clear, sharp, high-resolution pictures without causingdiscomfort to patients. It is also easy to use. Both staff andpatients are excited to soon have the CLARUS 700 on site at theRoyal Alexandra Hospital. In 2003, Lions Club members in Edmonton andacross northern Alberta established the LionsEye Research Fund (LERF) with the goal tosupport the Eye Institute of Alberta and theDepartment of Ophthalmology at the RoyalAlexandra Hospital. Since then, the progressivecollaboration between the Lions Clubs of Albertaand the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundationhas been successful in soliciting funding forpriority equipment, education, and innovativeprograms. On November 3rd last year, Lion NeilGourley presented the latest LERF fundraisingproject at the District C-1 Lions Clubs conventionin Devon. The cost of this camera is approximately 160,000.00. It produces extremely clear, sharp,high-resolution pictures in true colour, whichenables physicians to detect subtle changes ofthe retina, including tumors, retinal tears, andother diseases or infections without causingstress or discomfort to patients. Previous editionsof the District C-1 newsletter have featured thisfundraising campaign, as well as an introductionto the camera, and the goal of submitting amatching grant application to the Lions ClubsInternational Foundation (LCIF) in support of theCLARUS 700.Together, members of the LERF committee andstaff of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation(RAHF) prepared the matching grant applicationof 80,000.00, and Lion Neil presented it to theDistrict C-1 Cabinet at the Devon Convention. The Cabinet approved the submission of thisgrant application, and District Governor TerryKozma signed and endorsed it. The members ofLERF and RAHF officially submitted the grantapplication to the LCIF at the end of November2019. District Governor Terry recently receivedconfirmation of the approval of the matchinggrant application. Terrific news indeed! With the support of many donors, includingseveral Lions Clubs Chapters, LERF and theRAHF have exceeded 50% of their fundraisinggoal of 80,000.00 to match the LCIF grant. Aspecial Thank-You goes to the EdmontonMillwoods Lions Club for their generous donationof 25,000.00 in support of this important pieceof equipment. To tip the scales, further supportfrom the District C-1 Lions Clubs would begreatly appreciated. With your direct involvement, the Eye Institute of Alberta could soon have theCLARUS 700 on site to provide more advancedand faster treatment to those who suffer fromretinal infections and diseases in Alberta andbeyond. The current project of LERF is to fundraise forthe CLARUS 700 from Zeiss, the most advancedultra-wide imaging camera currently available.LIONS MDC-1 NEWSLETTERV 5 N 6 MAR 2020Submitted by Neil Gourley, South Edmonton Lions Club& Nina Muster, Royal Alexandra Hospital FoundationPage 2 of 15

DISTRICT C-1 SERVICE CO-ORDINATORIt’s hard to believe there are only four months leftin this Lionistic year! Where has the time gone?It seems when you’re doing good things in yourcommunity, time just flies. Thank you to all theclubs that have scheduled at least ONE newservice activity this year. That’s the goal ofInternational President Dr. Jung Yul Choi, thatevery club hold ONE more service activity thisyear. It’s still not too late! Four months to go.Let’s end this year on a high note, and have yourcommunity benefit even more from yourendeavours. Personally, I believe true Servicecomes from your heart. So what Service can youdo in your community that tugs on theheartstrings? Is it helping the less privileged, children, seniors, persons with disabilities, peopleconfined to hospitals or care centres? Servicedoesn’t have to have a cheque attached to it.Just being there to make a difference insomeone’s life, the one bright spot in their day,the person to talk to, the person to laugh with, maybe even the person to cry with. That isService from the heart and something everycommunity needs.Lions in Canada celebrate 100 years in 2020!Have you got your Centennial project for yourcommunity planned yet? I hope you’ll make itsomething special and memorable as a lastingreminder of your Service in the community. I’dlove to hear what your club has planned for theCentennial. Please email me,davensuzie@shaw.ca, and I’ll include yourproject in future newsletters. One of theCentennial goals across Canada is to plant100,000 trees. Where could your community usemore trees? Parks, playgrounds, walking trails, boulevards, memorial parks, campgrounds, schoolgrounds, etc? The powers that be, aretrying to make this service project very costefficient for both clubs and communities to takepart in. Start the conversation with yourcommunity leaders to get them excited aboutLIONS MDC-1 NEWSLETTERtaking part. Let them know it’s one of the waysWE SERVE our communities! More details onacquiring trees will be out in the very near future. It’s not often I’ve had the opportunity to saysomething good and exciting about MyLion. Aswe already know, the challenges have beenmany! However, I would sincerely like to thankLCI’s Global Action Team and IT personnel, forlistening to clubs concerns and challenges withMyLion. I think the changes made to the NEWMyLion make it sooooo easy to report yourservice activities and volunteer hours. I hope theclub Secretaries and/or Service Chairs had theopportunity to view one of the webinars I passedalong on a previous email. If you haven’twatched it, but would like to, let me know and I’llpass on the link. Finally, I’d like to thank all the clubs in the Districtthat have been reporting their service andactivities on MyLion, especially those clubs whohaven’t reported in some time and are now backat it. Reporting is part of your responsibility as aLion. Not only does it help your club keep trackof your volunteer hours, it helps Lions ClubsInternational know how much time members aregiving to their communities worldwide. Thesenumbers help LCI show prospective partners thededication of our membership and theunmatched funding and aid distribution system ofLions. Future partnerships could find that curefor diabetes, could find that cure for childhoodcancer, and will certainly make life much betterfor so many around the world. Where there’s aneed, there’s a Lion, and right now we NEEDclubs to report their activities and volunteerhours. If you are having challenges withreporting or have any questions, please email meat davensuzie@shaw.ca, and I’d be happy tohelp out.Yours in LionismLion Dave LeshchyshynDistrict C-1 Service Co-ordinatorV 5 N 6 MAR 2020Page 6 of 15
