General InformationTowingIf the vehicle needs to be towed, call a professionaltowing service. Never tow the vehicle behind anothervehicle with just a rope or chain. It is very dangerous. If the vehicle cannot be transported by flat-bed, itshould be towed with the front wheels off the ground. Ifdue to damage, the vehicle must be towed with thefront wheels on the ground, do the following:There are three popular methods oftowing a vehicle.Flat-bed Equipment- The operator loads the vehicleon the back of a truck. This is the best way oftransporting the vehicle. To accommodate flat-bed equipment, the vehicle isequipped with a towing hook (A) and tie down hooks (8).The towing hook can be used with a winch to pull thevehicle onto the truck, and the tie down hooks can beused to secure the vehicle to the truck.Manual Transmission Release the parking brake. Shift the transmission to Neutral.Automatic Transmission Release the parking brake. Start the engine. Shift to position, then rID position. Turn off the engine. It is best to tow the vehicle no farther than 50 miles (80km), and keep the speed below 35 mph (55 km/h).BINOTICEI Improper towing preparation will damage thetransmission. Follow the above procedure exactly. Ifyou cannot shift the transmission or start the engine(automatic transmission), the vehicle must betransported on a flat-bed. Trying to lift or tow the vehicle by the bumpers willcause serious damage. The bumpers are notdesigned to support the vehicle's weight.AWheel Lift Equipment- The tow truck uses twopivoting arms that go under the tires (front or rear) andlift them off the ground. The other two wheels remainon the ground.Sling-type Equipment- The tow truck uses metalcables with hooks on the ends. These hooks go aroundparts of the frame or suspension and the cables lift thatend of the vehicle off the ground. The vehicle'ssuspension and body can be seriously damaged. Thismethod of towing is unacceptable.1-18BACK
