RSP-1572 SURROUND SOUND PROCESSOR16About RotelGetting StartedOur story began 50 years ago. Over the decades, we have receivedhundreds of awards for our products and satisfied hundreds of thousandsof people who take their entertainment seriously- like you!Thank you for purchasing the Rotel RSP-1572 Surround Sound Processor. The unit is a full-featured audio/video control center for analog anddigital source components. It features digital processing for a widerange of formats including Dolby Surround , Dolby Digital and DTS source material.Rotel was founded by a family whose passionate interest in music ledthem to manufacture high-fidelity components of uncompromising quality.Through the years, that passion has remained undiminished and the familygoal of providing exceptional value for audiophiles and music lovers, regardless of their budget, is shared by all Rotel employees.Rotel’s engineers work as a close team, listening to, and fine tuning, each new product until it reaches their exacting musical standards. Theyare free to choose components from around the world in order to makethat product the best they can. You are likely to find capacitors fromthe United Kingdom and Germany, semiconductors from Japan or theUnited States, while toroidal power transformers are manufactured inRotel’s own factory. We all have concerns about our environment. And, as more and moreelectronics are produced and later discarded, it is especially importantfor a manufacturer to do all it can to engineer products that have aminimum negative impact on landfill sites and water tables. At Rotel, we are proud to do our part. We have reduced the lead contentin our electronics by using special RoHS solder, while our new Class D(not digital) amplifiers are up to five times more efficient than our legacydesigns and still deliver power and performance. These products runcool, give minimum wasted energy, are good for the environment andgive better sound too.Video Features Analog input and output video connections for use with Compositevideo and Component Video signals, including conversion to HDMIVideo output. HDMI switching for digital video signals up to 1080p, and HDMIBypass video. Compatible with DVI components with HDMI-DVIadapter. For more information see the section ‘HDMI: FrequentlyAsked Questions’ in this manual. Videophile line-doubling and scaling up to high-definitionresolutions. Accepts any type of video input: NTSC 480i, PAL 576i, NTSC 480p,PAL 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 1080p 24Hz and 1080p 3D. Outputs digital or analog video at any resolution (NTSC 480i, PAL576i, NTSC 480p, PAL 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p,1080p 3D)to match any digital or analog TVs.Audio Features Rotel’s Balanced Design Concept combines advanced circuit boardlayout, comprehensive parts evaluation, and extensive listening testsfor superior sound and reliability. Analog bypass mode for pure 2-speaker stereo with no digitalprocessing. Optical digital, coax digital, and analog input and output audioconnections. (HDMI video connections also carry digital audio, sowhen using HDMI there is no need for separate audio cables.) DVD-A high-resolution multichannel audio signals are automaticallydetected. MULTI Input for 7.1 channel analog signals from DVD-A and SACDplayers. Subwoofer options include .1 channel pass through orbass redirect feature with an analog low-pass filter for a summedsubwoofer output from seven channels. Finally, we have printed this brochure on recycled paper stock. While we understand that these are small first steps, they are still importantones. And we continue to pursue new methods and materials for a cleanerand greener manufacturing process. All of us at Rotel thank you for buying this product. We are sure it willbring you many years of enjoyment.Manufactured under license from Dolby Laboratories. Can be optimized for Music or Cinema sources. Rotel XS (eXtra Surround) automatically ensures proper decoding andoptimum performance from any multichannel digital signal on 6.1and 7.1 channel systems. Always active in any system with centerback speaker(s), Rotel XS even works with signals that would nototherwise activate the proper decoding (such as non-flagged DTSES and Dolby Surround EX discs) or for which there is no extendedsurround decoder (such as DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, and evenDolby Pro Logic II decoded Dolby Digital 2.0 recordings.) Surround modes for playback of surround sound material on 2channel and 3 channel systems for total compatibility. Four DSP Music modes. Audio Return Channel (ARC) allows the Rotel system to act as yourTV’s loudspeakers.Other features Zone 2,3, and 4 outputs with independent input selection and volumeadjustments for multi-zone custom installations along with IR-repeatercapability for operation from the remote zone. User friendly ON-SCREEN DISPLAY (OSD) menu system withprogrammable labels for all inputs. Choices of languages. Upgradable microprocessor software to accommodate futureupgrades. Assignable 12V trigger outputs for remote turn-on of power amplifiersand other components.UnpackingRemove the unit carefully from its packing. Find the remote controland other accessories. Save the box as it will protect the product if youmove or need to return it for maintenance.PlacementPlace the unit on a solid, level surface away from sunlight, heatmoisture, or vibration. Make sure that the shelf can support the weightof the unit.Place the unit close to the other components in your system and,if possible, on its own shelf. This will make initial hookup, andsubsequent system changes easier. The unit can generate heat during normal operation. Do not blockventilation openings. Allow a minimum of 10 cm or 4 inches ofunobstructed space around the unit. If installed in a cabinet, makesure that there is adequate ventilation.Do not stack other components or objects on top of the unit. Do not letany liquid fall into the cabinet.17Overview of ConnectionsAlthough the rear panel may look daunting, connecting the unit to yoursystem is straightforward. Each of the source components in the systemare connected to the unit’s inputs with a pair of standard RCA cables foranalog audio, a video connection (Composite, Component Video, and/or HDMI), and an optional digital audio cable (coax or optical)Note: Surround formats like Dolby Digital and DTS are digital formatsand the unit can only decode them when a digital input signal isavailable. For this reason, you should always connect your Blu-ray orDVD player’s digital outputs to the unit, using either the HDMI, opticalor coax inputs. The outputs of the RSP-1572 processor are sent to power amplifier(s) withstandard RCA cables from the preamp audio outputs. The video signal fromthe RSP-1572 is sent to the TV monitor using the HDMI connections. In addition, the processor has MULTI input connections for use witha source component that does its own surround decoding, remote IRsensor inputs, and 12V trigger connections for remote turn-on of otherRotel components.Note: Do NOT plug any system component into an AC source untilall connections have been properly made. Video cables should have a75 ohm impedance. The S/PDIF digital audio interface standard alsospecifies a 75 ohm impedance and all good digital cables adhere to thisrequirement. Do NOT substitute conventional audio interconnect cablesfor digital or video signals. Standard audio interconnects will pass thesesignals, but their limited bandwidth reduce performance. When making signal connections, connect LEFT channels to LEFT channeljacks and RIGHT channels to RIGHT channel jacks.
