Mike recently resigned from the position ofCoordinator with Via de Cristo, which he held for several years. Mike touched not only VDC but other Cursillo organizations inMN and beyond with his spirit of unity, his wisdom and his compassion. He met with the UEC Council within the last year andbegan an effort by which we are learning from one another how we might improve both movements. It has been our pleasure todialogue with Mike and learn from his experience.Mike, we wish you well in your pastoral endeavors and ask God’s blessings on your life.Page 5

Sponsor TipsNew Brochure:“Why Married Couples Attend Together”It is often difficult to sponsor a married couple when one of them doesnot want to attend. This new brochure will help you, as a Sponsor, to better understandwhy UEC has chosen to continue to require married couples to attendtogether. This new brochure can also be used as a tool to be given to a couple. It may persuade the partner who does want to attend to wait patiently untilthe other is ready. It may also help the partner who does not want to attendto compromise and attend on behalf of the partner who does desire to attendUnidos en Cristo.Either way, we believe the couple will be happy in the end.Either way, God’s timing can be honored. These brochures will be available at the July/August Clausuras and will beavailable for download from the web site.God ’s Timing is Perfect!UEC for Emotional Healing? On the weekend application, at the line on which the Clergy signs the applications, it states:“My signature acknowledges that the applicant will be supported and is emotionally and spiritually ableto attend a UEC weekend.”On the back of the application, under “What is UEC?”, it states:“UEC is not sensitivity training, nor a treatment for personal problems or emotional difficulties.”These statements have been intentionally placed for many reasons. As a sponsor, it is important that youare sending someone to UEC who is emotionally stable. It is easy to hope that UEC can help someonewho is struggling emotionally. We want to believe that if only they could experience God’s love andgrace in the cursillo way, they will be fine, perhaps even healed. While we can’t really predict what will occur on a UEC weekend, it often happens that UEC bringsemotional issues to the surface in ones’s life. For someone who is emotionally stable, this is oftenpositive. They are capable of giving these issues to God and discovering better ways to cope. However, for those who are not emotionally stable, having these issues come to the surface can be very scary anddebilitating. This may lead them to seek out guidance from team members who may not be qualifiedto handle such issues. Sometimes, the weekender may end up going home, not completing the UECweekend. This can have a negative impact on the team and on other weekenders. On behalf of those you wish to sponsor and on behalf of the team and clergy that watch over them, please be careful when sending us weekenders who may be emotional unstable. If you are unsure ofsomeone’s emotional stability, please discuss the situation with your UEC pastor or contact a CouncilClergy member and they can help you determine whether it is good time to sponsor or to wait.Page 3

Council QuartersConvenor’s CornerNew UEC ChurchesExpectationsThe new definition of a UEC church allows for a church to beinvolved in UEC even if their pastor has not attended a UECweekend.Over the years, I have pondered the question, “What issatisfaction? How is success measured?” All areas of lifeare brought into question when considered in these terms. Ihave come to realize that I usually measure results against myexpectations, but I wonder how appropriate this is. ConsiderUEC weekend attendance. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, weekendswere full, and many churches had waiting lists of people toattend. If this is the expectation based on past experience, thendoes this mean we are not successful and dissatisfied withUEC due to declining participation? Ultimately, it is up to Godwhether or not He chooses to use UEC to further His purposes.Just as the weekends are bathed in prayer, so too are thedeliberations of the UEC council. Based upon prayer and inputfrom the 4th Day Community, several changes have beenimplemented to make weekend admission requirements lessrestrictive. These changes are discussed elsewhere in this issueof the Palanca Press. While it is tempting to evaluate changesbased upon expectations, I submit that God will makeHis will known to us as long as we seek Him.The UEC Council encourages yourparticipation, patience, and prayer support.Thank you for being a part of the UECfamily.God’s Blessings,Dick Hamblin, UEC Council ConvenorIf you are a Cursillista in a church without a UEC pastor, youare a UEC community as long as your pastor gives his/herblessing for UEC involvement in the church. You may approach your pastor on your own, educating themabout UEC, inviting them to attend a weekend (which is stillhighly encouraged), or asking them for their blessing.Or, you may solicit the help of the Council. Darla O’Flanagan,Council New Church Coordinator, can provide a New Churchpacket and suggestions about how to get started. Any of theCouncil Clergy are willing and available to meet with you andyour pastor as well. This opens the door for many new UECchurches and for the gift of UEC tobe extended to more people, whilepreserving unity with our clergy.InspirationUEC VolunteerOpportunitiesAmazing Love, How Can it Be?from “A Year with C.S. Lewis” - January 12Assist with Manuals UpdatesWhen Christianity says that God loves man, it means thatGod LOVES man, not that He has some disinterested, reallyindifferent, concern for our welfare, but that, in awful andsurprising truth, we are the objects of His love.Nancy Sundeen is our new Manuals Manager. She willbe keeping all team, weekend and council manualsorganized, up-to-date and consistent. She would likesome assistance. We need people who have access to and arefamiliar with Microsoft WORD. Please call Kathy Walkerat 612-483-6151. (You may have called previously whenwe were looking for a manager . please call again if you areinterested in helping.)You asked for a loving God: you have one. The great spirityou so lightly invoked, the ‘lord of terrible aspect’ is present;not a senile benevolence that drowsily wishes you to be happyin your own way, not the cold philanthropy of a conscientiousmagistrate, nor the care of a host who feels responsible for thecomfort of guests, but the consuming fire Himself, the Lovethat made the worlds.New “4th Day” Parking / Direction Signs NeededWhen arriving to a church to deliver Palanca or hear a Rolloor attend a Clausura, you are greeted by the red, apple shapedsigns that say “4th Day” and point the direction you should gofor parking or for entering the building. How this should be, I do not know; it passes reason to explainwhy any creatures, not to say creatures such as we, should havea value so prodigious in their Creator’s eyes. This deep loveis certainly a burden of glory that is, except in rare moments ofgrace, beyond our desiring and understanding. Our signs are falling apart. They have served us well and arebegging retirement.I John 3:1How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that weshould be called children of God! And that is what we are!If you would be interested in making new signs or researchingother solutions for these signs, please call Kathy Walker at612-483-6151 or email walker@unidosencristo.com.—Kathy WalkerPage 6

Unidos en Cristo New Policies(approved by Council on various dates through May, 2008)In the February Palanca Press, we shared with you the Applicant Policies and AppealsProcess. At the February Women’s Clausura, we asked the 4th Day Community for prayeras we were approaching some policy issues that would involve difficult discussion andcomtemplation. In this issue, we’d like to thank you for your prayers and share with you thenewest policy changes. The New Definition of a UEC Church is:“A UEC Church is any Christian church with a Clergy member who has either attended acursillo-type weekend or has given his/her blessing for UEC involvement in the church andone or more Cursillistas.”The Policy Regarding Application Clergy Signature has changed to:“Clergy (UEC or non-UEC) signature is required for acceptance of a weekend application.Signature of the Liaison will be accepted in situations where Clergy is not availablefor an extended period of time (transition, sabbatical, etc.) If the Clergy (UEC or nonUEC) chooses to welcome the ministry of UEC in the church, but doesn’t wish to beincluded administratively, the Liaison can be designated to sign all applications. Signatureacknowledges that the applicant will be supported and is emotionally and spiritually able toattend a UEC weekend.”Over the next year, we will be contacting each UEC church to update contact information. What about the Married Couples Policy? For over a year, we have been surveying and listening to the 4th Day Community regardingwhether to continue to require married couples to attend together. Many cursillo movementsno longer require couples to attend together. However, when we approached this policy, itbecame clear to the Council that it was not time to make this decision. Instead, we voted tostay the decision for one year. During the next year, we will be talking with other cursilloorganizations to find out how this policy change has affected their ministry. We will alsocontinue asking God for direction. As always, your continued feedback is welcome. At the men’s Clausura on July 27, a Council member will review the UEC policies. At theLiaison Gathering on August 3 (3:00 pm before the women’s Clausura), several Councilmembers will be available to answer questions regarding all policies. Everyone is welcome. For a complete document showing the UEC Mission & Faith Statements, the Definition of aUEC Church, Allocation Policies and the Appeals Process, including explanation of how theCouncil arrived at these policies, visit our web site at www.unidosencristo.com or contact aCouncil member.Again, we want to thank the 4th Day Community for partnering with the Council in prayerand dialogue.UEC Council2007-2008ConvenorDick Hamblin952-949-0779Co-Convenor/CommunicationsKathy Walker612-483-6151SecretaryMike Meier507-775-7036TreasurerTeresa VanBatavia763-542-9506AllocationsDon Henrich952-922-4918Leader DevelopmentDick Hamblin952-949-0779Nancy Adsem952-474-2663Leader TrainingSusan Stevens952-937-0483Tod Paulson320-252-7210Linda Shirley952-881-4504Liaison CoordinatorKory Everson612-866-7606New ChurchesDarla O’Flanagan763-675-3960PalancaGordy Nagel952-934-2033Site SelectionKathy Nelson952-937-2016SuppliesBrian Laluzerne(technical supplies)952-440-3794Don May(truck supplies)651-437-6905ClergyPamela Jensen (Advocate)952-937-2024Richard Townsend-Anderson763-323-7640Janice Knight952-292-2138To e-mail a Council member, usetheir last name plus@unidosencristo.com, i.e.:hamblin@unidosencristo.comPage 7
