Progress is being made on transfer Between 2015-16 and 2018-19, time-to-degree at UNM-Main (Albuquerque)for transfer students decreased by over one full year (from 3.6 years to 2.5years). The number of transfer students who graduated from the College of Nursingincreased by 142% (76 in 2016-17 compared to 184 in 2019-20). Both the School of Architecture & Planning and the College of Fine Artsmarkedly decreased the average number of credit hours earned at graduation(-11.1% and -10.4%, respectively). These decreases represent a savings ofone full-time semester for an average student.Several of our nationally funded grants are contributing to transfer successThe Student Experience Project, a grant under the APLU umbrella, demonstrates that academic outcomesfor transfer students were better in UNM classes taught by faculty using growth mindset and belongingtechniques in Fall 2020 than in classes without these techniques. This indicates that we can broaden use ofthese techniques for overall improvement in academic outcomes for transfer students.Other grants funded by Mellon (Humanities Now, with CNM) and NSF (Ecure and STEM success)13

What challenges do transferstudents face? How is UNM addressing thesechallenges? *These were measured: Student experience project(2019) Basic needs report (2020)Student financial and basic needs hardships*Navigating new environments and lack of sense of belonging*Articulation issuesMany B.A./B.S. courses and course sequences defined byprofessional accreditation and national education standards14

How can the state government help?18

Help with student financial challenges Additional support for State work study Explore why students lose Lottery Scholarship andconsider modifications to the program to addressthese Example: Greater latitude towards the 15 credit hourrequirement Completing a program in 120 credits over 8 termsrequires that the stars perfectly align – nothing can gowrong Transfer students especially are financially challengedand tend to have fewer support systems at home A single illness, sick parent, lost job, or other roadblockcan easily result in withdrawing from a course, fallingbelow 15 credits, losing a term, losing the Lottery, anddelay or loss from the system (these might bemitigating circumstances, but many students neverappeal) The need to drop a single course for performancereasons can result in the loss of the Lottery (this is notconsidered a “mitigating circumstance” in the code)Only 43% UNM NM resident students were onLottery in Spring 2021The majority lost Lottery eligibility on the hoursrequirement, not the GPA requirement19

Facilitate HEI’s to work together Sponsor a state-wide conference on high engagement teaching and learning practicesthat leads to transfer student completion Individually in our universities, faculty and advisors have developed ways to help studentsmove on and succeed. Much of this work is supported by various national grants (Mellon, NSF, APLU, etc.) and isdiscipline based A series of conferences (STEM, Humanities, Health Fields, etc.) around effective methods toimprove student achievement would let us learn from each other This would also build familiarity with curriculum, courses, teaching approaches, and studentchallenges across HEIs, improving potential for articulation Sponsor state-wide summit for support services and student affairs professionals Tutoring centers, culturally based support centers, etc., need to learn from each other Staff in these centers need to meet and know each other to provide warm hand-offs with trust inthe receiving institution UNM has offered an advising institute, but this could be expanded Show pride in the specialized accreditation and distinctive programs of different HEIs20

Myth and Reality on Transfer to UNMMYTH: UNM does not transfer all academic creditREALITY: UNM accepts validated academic credit fromaccredited HEIs; however, not all lower-division academic creditcan be applied toward completion of requirements for a UNMmajor. UNM is providing curriculum maps and advising to helpstudents understand the best path to graduation.MYTH: UNM does not participate equally in Common CourseNumbering.REALITY: UNM has renumbered all of its lower divisioncourses (except engineering– which has not yet beenimplemented by HED). Like all HEIs, UNM has some commoncourse numbered courses that are currently only offered in theUNM system. In these cases, the student learning outcomes forostensibly similar courses are, in fact, quite different. Forexample, UNM’s “Small Sculpture” has very different SLOsthan “Jewelry-making and metal-work”; these are not the samecourse.MYTH: UNM does not accept NM General Education creditsand/or does not accept them in the content areas in which thestudent took them originally.REALITY: UNM accepts all NM General Education credits inthe content areas in which the student took them originally or inthe area that best works to the student’s advantage. UNMaccepts completed NM General Education as a package fromtransfer institutions and does not require students to completeany additional general education credits if a student is “gen edcomplete.”MYTH: UNM Biology refuses to articulate smoothly withAssociates-granting institutionsREALITY: UNM Biology worked for many years on shared SLOsand learning goals for 200-level courses suitable for countingtoward the Biology B.S. When Associates-granting institutionsindicated that these SLOs and learning goals were too advancedfor their 200-level offerings, UNM Biology applied the advancedSLOs and learning goals to 300-level courses so thatappropriate articulation toward completion of the B.S. would beclear to students.MYTH: UNM does not accept Calculus or other math for creditREALITY: UNM accepts and transfers Calculus I, II, and III fromother HEIs; UNM’s sequence for teaching concepts in Calculusis different than the sequence at other HEIs and so UNM haddifferent numbers for Calculus to make this clear to students.Pre-college-level math cannot fulfill general educationrequirements.MYTH: UNM does not provide orientation or advising to transferstudentsREALITY: UNM offers a special new student orientation totransfer students in preparation for Fall and Spring semesters.UNM trains advisors to work with transfer students.27
