Church musicians of our Metropolis have certainly missed our ministry of singing! With the COVID-19restrictions on church attendance and the dangers of virus spread from singing, our liturgical lives havedrastically changed over the past six months - only one chanter, sometimes two, has been participating whilechoirs have had to remain silent. However, we realize that we’re not alone in this separation from our belovedstewardship to our Church. This is happening all over our Archdiocese as well as in churches and temples of allreligious faiths, in the schools, within community choruses, and in other popular professional concert venues.Research is telling us that singing is one of the “spreaders” of the virus, muchlike shouting and cheering, especially where there are closely-spaced largegroups in enclosed places over long periods of time such as happens in ourchurch services. So we must be careful.Given that, what have we been doing for our ministry? Our chanters have takenthe full load of the responsibility for rendering the hymns of our services – notonly the Orthros and Divine Liturgy on Sundays, but also for Vespers, Matins,Paraklesis, Heretismoi, and other services since last March. We owe them manythanks and kudo’s for their service, their stamina, and their dedication.Choir members have tried to be patient, taking advantage of time to participatein services via live-streaming, often “visiting” other parishes to learn from theirpractices. Some choirs have held ongoing meetings via Zoom, providingopportunities to keep connected as a “choir family.” We’ve also been listening toOrthodox and other choirs on the Internet, experiencing new hymns and evenwatching a few vocal lessons to help keep our voices in shape. Most of all, therehas been much talking about the future and consideration of ways we may beable to “come back” that are safe for us as well as the congregation. In looking towards the future, we will await word from His Eminence,Metropolitan Nicholas, to learn of his guidance about the return of choirs. We foresee we may be able to sing, masked, in smaller groups for shorter periods of time during the Liturgy for a while, collaborating with ourchanters to share in the presentation of the service. We’ll also have to reconsider rehearsal spaces so that wecan physically distance and practice safely. In the meantime, some other exciting things have happened to increase our knowledge about coping during theCOVID-19 crisis and planning for beyond it. As part of the Clergy-Laity Congress, the National Forum of GreekOrthodox Church Musicians presented a webinar for parish delegates and clergy entitled, “COVID-19 andChurch Music in the Parish.” As National Chairman, Vicki Pappas presented information about what researchtells us about singing and its impact on virus spread, including the implications this has for parish musicprograms. She suggested some practical ideas for the safe return of church music in the parishes – for theirchoirs, chanters, and youth music activities. This webinar took place on Wednesday afternoon, September 9th,as part of a series of Ministry Webinars being sponsored by the Clergy-Laity Congress. In addition, immediately following the Clergy-Laity Congress, the National Forum of Greek Orthodox ChurchMusicians held its 44th Annual Meeting via Zoom, and church musicians from MEFGOX participated in this virtualevent. As part of this gathering, there were two webinars for all church musicians in the Archdiocese (clergy, chanters, and choir members), one a repeat of “COVID-19 and Church Music in the Parish” on Friday,September 11th and a second, conducted by prominent vocal music professionals from across the Archdiocese, entitled “Tips and Tricks for Vocalizing During COVID-19” on Monday, September 14th. All thoseinterested were welcome to participate! For more information about attending future webinars and the Internet links needed to participate, feel free tocontact Vicki at pappas@ondiana.edu.

Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,We are living in difficult and uncharted times. With COVID-19disrupting our normal routines, work programs and our generalsocial interactions, I have faith that we will collectively worktogether to get through these challenges with the support ofone an another and in our belief that our Lord will be beside usthrough these trials. One of the challenges we have, deals with the Pension andBenefits Fund for our Priests of the Greek OrthodoxArchdiocese of America. This fund provides for the health care and pensions of our clergy andthose that are currently in retirement. This program has been underfunded for many years andhas reached a point that significant changes need to be made to the fund for it to be able toprovide the current level of benefits that are being received by our clergy. Alternatives that arebeing discussed are: a. funding the current benefits and pension to the required level to meetcurrent and long term benefit distribution; b. grandfather the current benefits and pension planfor those who are currently retired; c. establish a new pension plan for those priests that are notpart of the current health and pension plan; d. possibly a blend of these proposals. Thesealternative options are still in review and discussion. This situation has added an additional burden to our priests who are ministering to theircongregations during these unchartered times with limited attendance for our sacraments, limitedservices of our church and limited access to our individual parishioners and their families.I want to ask that you join me and letting our Priests know that we as a family support them, careabout them, love them as our Spiritual Fathers. As we navigate through these difficult times andthe discussions for the long term impact of the Health and Pension Benefits Plan that we will dowant we can and is necessary to resolve this issue in a loving and caring manner for the GreekOrthodox Archdiocese of America.Yours in Christ,Patrick R. CrossonVice ChairmanMetropolis of Detroit Council
