I predict that whattranspires in 2020 will prove thisstatement true with a few descriptivewords attached such as – new, repurposed, really? wow! we did it . as the yearprogresses.” This was my opening paragraph in thearticle I wrote for the January, 2020 Newsletter. Idon’t think that I could have come any closer to thetruth regarding 2020!I am exhaling a cautious sigh of relief as 2020is almost over. It has been an unprecedentedtumultuous year that has generatedconsequences impacting the environment,a volatile racial justice system, a disparagingpolitical climate, the health and lives of 237,000people in Minnesota, resulting in economicdisparities, schools and businesses in flux, losses, daunting days, and questions that remain to beanswered. It sounds bleak but there is hopeand light at the end of the tunnel.(continued on p 2)

FiftyNorth Report DECEMBERAUGUST 202020203Director’s Message - cont. All I Really Need to Know . I Learned in KindergartenI leave you with these favorite words from:All I Really Need to Know I Learned inKindergarten by Robert Fulghum.ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about how tolive and what to do and how to be I learnedin kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top ofthe graduate-school mountain, but there in thesandpile at Sunday School. These are the things Ilearned:n Share everything.n Play fair.n Don’t hit people.n Put things back where you found them.n Clean up your own mess.n Don’t take things that aren’t yours.n Say you’re sorry when you hurtsomebody.n Wash your hands before you eat.n Flush.l Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.l Live a balanced life—learn some and think someand draw and paint and sing and dance and playand work every day some.l Take a nap every afternoon.l When you go out into the world, watch out fortraffic, hold hands, and stick together.l Be aware of wonder.l Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup:The roots go down and the plant goes up andnobody really knows how or why, but we are all likethat.l Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and eventhe little seed in the Styrofoam cup—they all die.So do we.l And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books andthe first word you learned—the biggest word ofall—LOOK.l Everything you need to know is in theresomewhere. The Golden Rule and love andbasic sanitation.l Ecology and politics and equality andsane living.Take any one of those items and extrapolate itinto sophisticated adult terms and apply it to yourfamily life or your work or your government or yourworld and it holds true and clear and firm.Think what a better world it would be if we all—thewhole world—had cookies and milk about threeo’clock every afternoon and then lay down with ourblankies for a nap. Or if all governments had a basicpolicy to always put things back where they foundthem and to clean up their own mess. And it is still true, no matter how old you are—whenyou go out into the world, it is best to hold handsand stick together.Until next time .

Although adventure tourism is rapidly growing South Africa, research on the subject in this region is relatively limited. A few studies have examined issues and challenges facing the adventure tourism industry as a whole. Rogerson (2007) noted some of the challenges facing the development of adventure tourism in South Africa. One was the lack of marketing, particularly marketing South Africa .
