I am a bit of an oldfashioned teacher, and I stillfeel that formal lecture has itsplace in the classroom. Soyou do notes. You’ll need tobuild up your notetakingmuscle for college, which hasa lot of lecture, and I want youto be really prepared. To start, you’ll be watching afour-and-a-half-minute videoabout note taking. It willexplain why we need to takenotes, give a few differentnote taking techniques thatyou can try, and explains howto use your notes to your bestadvantage. So let’s get itstarted.Video length is4:39WHEN THIS VIDEO IS OVER ASK IF THERE’S ANY QUESTIONS BEFORE MOVING ON.Slide 4.THE CORNELLMETHOD OFNOTETAKING:IntroductionMost of you are familiar withthe Cornell method of notetaking. A page is divided intotwo. The first third is taken upwith a column called “Cues”which you are supposed to fillin after class with the mainideas, prompts, andquestions. The other 2/3rds istaken up with the notesthemselves, the main pointsand details from class. Howyou take your notes is up toyou and you might even wantPowerPoint Script / 12th Grade Economics / Modified Cornell Notes1

SLIDEDESCRIPTION OF THE SLIDETHE SLIDESUGGESTED SCRIPTto use some of the techniquesin the video we just saw.NOTESFinally, the bottom part of thepaper is reserved for thesummary. Again, you do thisafter class and you distil thenotes on the page into a good, strong paragraph.Slide 5.THE CORNELLMETHOD OFNOTETAKING:ExamplesHere is the Cornell method inoutline form. I’ve made acopy of it which I’ll havedistributed.GIVE STACK OF PAPERS TO A STUDENT TO PASS OUT AS YOU CONTINUE Slide 6.Slide 7.Slide 8.Slide 9.Slide 10.Here’s another example of amodified Cornell. It’s the backpage of your handout. On theone to the left the column“cues” has been replaced withthe term “questions.” It isalso evident that the notetaker has reviewed the notes. You can see it in thehighlighting in yellow and theadditional information in red. There is more than one way totake notes during apresentation or lecture. Somepeople like the outlinemethod others brainstorming while others use picturesand symbols. Here’s another video in whichalternative forms ofnotetaking are shared. Thepresenter’s name is Doug Neilland he teaches a skill called“sketch-noting.”PowerPoint Script / 12th Grade Economics / Modified Cornell Notes2

SLIDESlide 11.Slide 12.DESCRIPTION OF THE SLIDETHE SLIDESUGGESTED SCRIPT“Sketch-noting” video.NOTESThis video is9:00 minutes. You’ll be taking notes in thisclass using a modified versionof regular Cornell notes whichI feel works best for my styleof teaching.Have a student distribute a copy of the note-taking sheet.Slide 13.Slide 14.As you can see here, eachnote page contains four parts:the notes themselves, yourquestions, key ideas andadditions, and a pagesummary. This is a pretty cute cartoon .During a presentation you areexpected to take notes usingthe method that fits yourstyle. You can write them inpencil or in dark blue or blackink. Save the colors for later.Slide 15.Slide 16.And no laptops for takingnotes. It has been provenbeyond a shadow of a doubtthat students who type theirnotes do not do as wellacademically as students whodo it the old-fashioned waywith ink or pencil. After class, on your own orVERY IMPORTANTLY, incollaboration with peoplefrom this class, you areexpected to review andhighlight yournotes CLICK Add keyideas and additionalinformation in that column, which you can help oneanother with (it needs to be inred ink) CLICK Fill in thequestion column CLICK PowerPoint Script / 12th Grade Economics / Modified Cornell Notes3

SLIDESlide 17.Slide 18.Slide 19.Slide 20.DESCRIPTION OF THE SLIDETHE SLIDESUGGESTED SCRIPTWrite a pagesummary CLICK andwhen the whole presentationis finished, write a finalsummary.NOTESBy the way, since eachpresentation will probably lastfor more than one day, whena new day of notes comes up,skip a few lines, add the datedead center, and then takenotes.A quick note on collaboration. You are not in competitionwith anyone in this classroom, which means that it’sperfectly fine to worktogether to make your notesas good as they can be. Youhave to take the notes andwrite the summaries on yourown, but I encourage you toshare your notes with oneanother. What you mighthave missed your friend mighthave gotten. CLICK Inaddition, if you can help oneanother out on the questioncolumn, that would be great! If you’re absent on a notetaking day, no problem, justborrow someone’s notes andcopy them (not Xeroxed).Make sure you mark on thepaper, big and plain to see, that these are copied notesbecause you were not in classthat day. Give me the nameof the person, or persons thathelped you out as well. The grading is prettystraightforward. 100 lecturenote points are possible, divided into notes at 50points, your questions at 10,page summaries at 10, keyideas and additions at 20, andPowerPoint Script / 12th Grade Economics / Modified Cornell Notes4

SLIDESlide 21.Slide 22.Slide 23.DESCRIPTION OF THE SLIDETHE SLIDESUGGESTED SCRIPTthe final summary at 10points. Notes are usually dueon the day of the test orcomp, so you’ll have plenty oftime to get it all together.Really, there is no excuse foranyone not to get an “A” innotes at the end of thesemester.NOTESI’ll be providing the paper fornotes. You’ll find them on theside table. Take about two orthree sheets at the start andjust get up and pick up acouple when you need them.Don’t be selfish and take morethan you need at a time. Ifyou do I will stop providingpaper which means there ismore of a chance of youmessing up and getting alower grade. You’ll beattaching a separate sheet forgrading as well before yousubmit your notes.Okay, that’s about it. Anyquestions?
