The wordAdvent comes from the Latin word meaning “coming.” Jesus iscoming, and Advent is intended to be a season of preparation for Hisarrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it isalso intended to be a period of preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and fasting are appropriate during this season. This seasoninvites us to be awake and watchful for His coming. Few of the mainrecommendations of this season are: we personally prepare our soulby a genuine and good Confession, Charity- being thoughtful aboutthe poor, less fortunate and under privileged and support them in ourbest ability and capacity to alleviate their sufferings and Offer hopeto the hopeless and challenged. I encourage everybody in our faithcommunity to work on these above recommendations. Because it isnot only the way to prepare ourselves for a meaningful and joyfulcelebration of “Christmas” but also to stretch ourselves a little bitmore to show our love for God and neighbors. During this whole Advent season here at St. Anthony’s we will keep the main church openfor Confession on Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. And onDec. 11, 2019 Wednesday from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM we will have the“Penance Service” done by Fr. John Sheraton, pastor of St. Mary’sChurch, Revere. Kindly save the date to get to church on that dayto make use of this great opportunity and prepare yourselves for theChristmas celebration.Next weekend Dec. 8, 2019 Sunday we will be doing the joy and funfilled event – “Pancake with Santa”. The tickets for this beautiful andjoyful event are being sold at the rectory and the church vestibuleright after the weekend Masses. Kindly buy the tickets and bringyour kids to our church Bingo Hall right after the 7:30 AM Mass tohave food and fun. It is our faith community event. We have to support and make it successful. In the afternoon of that day the SpanishPrayer Group which gathers every Monday evening at the chapelfor prayer service will be having a “Consecration Mass” at 3:00 PMin the main church. They have been preparing themselves alongwith their children to consecrate themselves to the Lord through ourBlessed Mother Mary for three months with prayers, retreat andconfession. I tell you; their demonstration faith is very moving!Advent Giving Tree is out there in our Church vestibule. You havebeen very generous and supportive to make this program very fruitful and successful in the past, I seek you to do the same in this yeartoo. I thank and appreciate it in advance.7:30In Thanksgiving to our Blessed Mother bySuzanneWell, I hear the bell to go and hold the wheel of St. Anthony’s! I willsee you next weekend! FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENTBackground on the Gospel ReadingSounds of Christmas ConcertToday is the first Sunday of Advent, which is also the first Sunday of a new liturgical year for the Church. The Advent seasonincludes the four Sundays that precede Christmas. It is a timeof preparation for the coming of the Lord. In this season, werecall two central elements of our faith: the final coming of theLord in glory and the incarnation of the Lord in the birth ofJesus. Key themes of the Advent season are watchful waiting, preparation, and justice.St. Anthony’s will host the annual Robert A.Marra Memorial “Sounds of Christmas” concert featuring the North Shore PhilharmonicOrchestra here on Sunday, December 15 at4 p.m. Admission to the concert is free inexchange for a generous donation of non-perishable food to the Food Drive that is organized by the St. Anthony’s Holy Name Societyto benefit the Revere Food Pantry. In this new liturgical year, the Gospel of Matthew will be theprimary Gospel proclaimed (Lectionary Cycle A). In today’sGospel, we hear Jesus speak about the need for wakefulness, for watchful waiting, for the coming of the Son of Man.Ladies SodalityFriday December 6, 2019 Ladies Sodality willbe having their Annual Pot-Luck Christmasparty in the following the 7:00 PM Mass, please meet at the Church at 6:30 PM toparticipate at the Holy Rosary. If you like toparticipate in the Yanke Swap please bring awrapped gift in the amount of 10.00. Therewill be no meeting January and February.Matthew’s Gospel is dated by most scholars after 70 A.D.Most believe that Matthew wrote for a primarily Jewish community, but one that was no longer centered on the Templein Jerusalem. These were Jewish Christians trying to come toterms with their relationship to Judaism in a new situation: Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Theremay have been Christians who believed that the events of theworld around them gave evidence of the imminent return ofthe Lord in glory.Holy Name SocietyThe passage from Matthew we read today is rather straightforward. No one knows the precise time of the coming of theLord in glory, so watchful waiting and vigilance are required. The passage speaks to the uselessness of looking for signs;there will be none. As a thief sneaks in during the night, so willthe Lord’s coming in glory be.Wil be meeting on Sunday December 8, at the7:30 AM Mass, please meet 15 minutes early to be able to process down with the priest. After Mass we will have a brief meeting andthen we will be participating in the Breakfastfor Santa to support our Faith Formationprogram down stairs in the parish hall. The question for us as members of the Christian community, then, is how do we prepare for this? Today’s passage speaksmore about the manner of waiting, rather than the details of thepreparation. Jesus compares the vigilance required of Christians to the vigilance of a homeowner who knows the plansof the thief. If one knows that the thief’s action is imminent, one remains watchful. As Christians, we know that our Lordis coming even if we cannot know the precise timing. Jesuscalls us to be watchful and vigilant, like the homeowner. If webecome lax in our Christian living, we may be caught unprepared.5
