Theenergy content available during operationis lower.Operate the electric product in a dry place,indoors only.Do not dispose of the product with yourhousehold waste.4Safety Precautions4.1Warning Signs4.1.1Warning SymbolsMeanings of warning signs and labels on thebrushcutter, battery and charger:Observe safety notices and take thenecessary precautions.Read, understand and keep the UserManual.Wear safety glasses.Observe the safety advice concerningflying objects and associated meas‐ures.Remove the battery during work stop‐pages, transport, storage, maintenanceor repair.Protect brushcutter and charger fromrain and dampness.4Maintain a safety distance.Observe the permitted battery temper‐ature range.4.2Intended UseThe STIHL FSA 60 R brushcutter is designed formowing grass.Never use the brushcutter in the rain.The STIHL AK battery feeds the brushcutter withpower.The STIHL AL 101 charger is used to charge theSTIHL AK battery.WARNING There is a risk that batteries and chargers thatare not explicitly approved by STIHL for thebrushcutter can cause fire or explosion. Per‐sons may be seriously or fatally injured andproperty may be damaged. Use the brushcutter with a STIHL AK battery. Recharge the STIHL AK bat‐tery with a STIHL AL 101,AL 300 or AL 500 charger. Using brushcutter, battery or charger for pur‐poses for which they were not designed cancause material damage and serious or fatalinjuries. Use brushcutter, charger and battery asspecified in this user manual.4.3The OperatorWARNING Users without adequate training or instructioncannot recognize or assess the risks involvedin using the trimmer, battery and charger. 4 Safety PrecautionsEnglish If you pass the trimmer, battery and chargeron to another person: Always give them theinstruction manual. Make sure the user meets the followingrequirements:– The user must be rested.– The user must be in goodphysical condition andmental health to operateand work with the trimmer,battery and charger. If theuser’s physical, sensory ormental ability is restricted,he or she may work onlyunder the supervision of oras instructed by a responsi‐ble person.– The user is able to recognize and assessthe risks involved in using the trimmer,battery and charger.– The user must be of legalage or is being trained in atrade under supervision inaccordance with nationalrules and regulations. Wear close-fitting safety glasses.Suitable safety glasses are tested inaccordance with EN 166 or nationalregulations and available commer‐cially with the corresponding mark‐ing. Wear face protection. Wear long trousers made from resistantmaterial.Dust can be whipped up during operation.Whipped up dust can damage the respiratorypassages and cause allergic reactions. If dust is generated: Wear a dust respiratormask.Inappropriate clothing can snag on wood,brush or the brushcutter. Users not wearingsuitable clothing are at risk of serious injury. Wear close-fitting clothing. Remove scarves and jewelry.The user may come into contact with the rotat‐ing cutting attachment during operation. Thismay result in serious injury to the user. Wear robust footwear. Wear long trousers made from resistantmaterial.There is a risk of the user coming into contactwith the cutting attachment or the line limitingblade during cleaning and maintenance workand when the cutting attachment is mountedor removed. This may result in injury to theuser. Wear work gloves made from resistant mate‐rial.Wearing unsuitable footwear may cause theuser to slip. This may result in injury to theuser. Wear sturdy, closed-toed footwear with highgrip soles.– The user has receivedinstruction from a STIHLservicing dealer or other4.5Work Area and Surroundingsexperienced user before4.5.1Brushcutterworking with the trimmer forWARNINGthe first time. Maintain a distance of 15 m from objects. Do not leave the brushcutter unattended. Ensure that children cannot play with thebrushcutter.5

English4 Safety Precautions The brushcutter is not waterproof. If you workin the rain or in a damp environment, an elec‐tric shock may occur. The user may be injuredand the brushcutter may be damaged. Do not work in the rain or in a dampenvironment. Electrical components of the brushcutter canproduce sparks. Sparks can cause fires andexplosions in a flammable or explosive envi‐ronment. This can result in serious injuries ordeath and damage to property. Do not work in a flammable environment orin an explosive environment.4.5.2ChargerWARNING Bystanders, children and animals are notaware of and cannot assess the dangers of acharger or electric current. Bystanders, chil‐dren and animals may be seriously or fatallyinjured. Keep bystanders, children and animals awayfrom the work area. Make sure that children can‐not play with the charger. The charger is not waterproof. If you work inthe rain or in a damp environment, an electricshock may occur. The user may be injuredand the charger may be damaged. Do not operate it in the rain or in adamp environment. The charger is not protected against all ambi‐ent conditions. 6 Charging the Battery, LEDs3Mounting the Charger on aWall2The charger can be mounted on a wall.21a341bea e0000-GXX-0609-A0dCheck the following pointswhen mounting the charger ona wall:– Suitable fixing materials.– The charger is level.The following dimensions are maintained:– a at least 100 mm– b (for AL 101) 75 mm– b (for AL 300 and AL 500) 120 mm– c 4.5 mm– d 9 mm– e 2.5 mm6.2The charging process startsautomatically when the plug isinserted in a wall outlet and thebattery is fitted in the charger.The charger switches itself offautomatically when the battery isfully charged.The battery and charger become hot during thecharging process.0458-832-0121-B. VA0.B21.5 Insert the plug (6) in a convenient wall outlet(7).The charger (3) runs a self test. The LED (4)glows green for about 1 second and then redfor about 1 second. Fit the connecting cable (5). Insert the battery (2) in the guides in thecharger (3) and press it home as far as stop.The LED (4) glows green. The LEDs (1) glowgreen and the battery (2) is being charged. If the LED (4) and the LEDs (1) stop glowing:The battery (2) is fully charged and can betaken out of the charger (3). If the charger (3) is no longer required. Dis‐connect the plug (6) from the wall outlet (7).6.3State of Charge80-100%60-80%Charging the BatteryThe charging time depends on several factors,e.g. temperature of the battery or the ambienttemperature. The actual charging time may differfrom the specified charging time.
