BB 2017-43October 27, 2017BID OPENING FOR WV CAPITOL DOME REPAIR CONTRACT POSTPONEDThe bid opening for a major, complex project to repair critical water leaks and structural damageto the Capitol dome has been postponed for three weeks to allow time for contractors to gain amore comprehensive understanding of the scope of the work. “We want to make sure anyonewho bids on the project has a full understanding of the specifications,” Department ofAdministration spokeswoman Diane Holley-Brown said Tuesday. The bid opening for theproject to repair “significant water infiltration” into the interior dome, as well as to replace a failedtensioning system that helps support the inner dome, is scheduled to bid on November 15.The bid package calls for replacing the tensioning system and installing a new system that willfeature computer monitoring to measure tension in each of the metal rods, with the ability toadjust each rod if the tension becomes slack. A three-week delay in the bidding process shouldnot be critical, given that the overall project is expected to take two years to complete, duringwhich time the Capitol Rotunda will be closed to the public.
