PURPOSE OF MPA:It is the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) Music PerformanceAssessment (MPA)To provide opportunities for students and directors to perform in anenvironment which provides critical evaluation of its performance bynoted experts in the field of band performanceTo provide the opportunity for students and directors to perform fortheir peers in a formal concert settingTo provide a performance opportunity which will serve as amotivational goal for students and directorsTo provide an opportunity for students and directors to hearperformances of their peers and learn from hearing thoseperformances, and to provide a goal which is so compelling that thepreparation for attaining that goal becomes the vehicle forcontinued growth and to demonstrate students' abilities to applymusical fundamentals and concepts in an ensemble performancesetting.IMPORTANCE OFATTENDANCE AT MPAMusic Performance Assessment performance dates and times willbe announced as soon as we receive them. This is the only time during the year that the band is evaluated byother music education professionals. This event allows us to gaugethe quality of music education being provided at our school alongwith the quality of student participation In the program. The band will earn a rating from a panel of judges. The rating will bebased on preparation and correctness of the music. The rating willalso be based on uniformity and presentation of the group. The band will also earn a rating for sight-reading. Students anddirector must perform a piece at first sight with only a few momentsof preparation time.It is vital to have an audience at our assessment! Parents, we highlyencourage you to join us at our performance!

STAY IN BANDwe know.your kids have a lot of choices when it comes to the activities they are involvedin. Please begin to consider the following when planning for next school year:Band is both an art and an academic subject. In order for students to create the artistic product of music, they must use languagereading skills, math computation skills, fine motor skills, and physical movement insideand outside the body to create sounds on their instrument. After learning to create the correct sound at the correct time, students work toincorporate artistic elements into the music. We teach many qualities of being a coachable, employable, and, more importantly, a goodindividual. Even if your child never plans to have a career in music, the discipline and teamwork taught through band will stay with your child forever!Students learn to be on time, be prepared, work as a large team, and learnresponsibility, amongst many other things. This is the only place where all students in the room must be accountable to themselvesand everyone else simultaneously. They learn that what they do in the moment affectsevery single person in the room. They are a very important part of something bigger than themselves.Opportunities through band are endless!Students have the choice to audition for honor bands, perform at Solo & Ensemble, joinour WMS Marching Wolves, next year's Jazz Band, earn High School Credit in 8th grade, travel with the band, etc.It doesn't end with us! Students move on to bigger things after 8th grade. The StonemanDouglas Eagle Regiment is an amazing organization giving students even moreopportunities!Students can also continue through college as a music major or playing as a non-majorin marching and concert bands at Colleges and Universities. This gives students theopportunity to earn scholarships towards their education, even if they don't studymusic! We love your students enough to teach them how to be successful. We set high expectations for the students daily in our classroom and teach them toachieve. We want them to be successful and we have their best interest at heart.Students get new teachers every year, except in band! We can be their anchor throughthe constant changes of middle school. The group of students involved in band are some of the best students at Westglades!Students aim high--both academically and behaviorally. Many of them become life-longfriends!
