European Refrigeration Controls CatalogueCatalogue SectionProduct BulletinIssue4P215PR/RMAugust 2016Series P215PR/RMDirect- and Remote-Mount Pressure-Actuated CondenserFan Speed Controllers for Single-Phase MotorsIntroductionThe Series P215PR/RM direct-mount and remotemount pressure-actuated condenser fan speedcontrollers are designed for speed variation of singlephase motors. Head pressure control of arefrigeration system, through speed variation of thefan on an air-cooled condenser, results in optimumperformance throughout the year. Once the outputdrops below 30%, the fan is cut off. The SeriesP215PR/RM controllers are designed for noncorrosive refrigerant systems. See Table 1 for a list offeatures and benefits.A pressure-actuated control provides the most directand fastest response to pressure variations in therefrigerant system. The controller varies the supplyvoltage to the motor from 30% to at least 95% overthe proportional band using the phase-cuttingprinciple. This principle provides speed variation of apermanent split capacitor or shaded pole motors thatdo not draw more than 4 A (RMS) full-load current. The motor manufacturer should have approved theproduct for this speed control principle.Figure 1: P215PR Direct-Mount PressureActuated Condenser Fan Speed ControllerWe recommend confirming with the electric motormanufacturer that the motor can be used with acontroller, using the phase-cutting principle for speedvariation. You can also provide a copy of this productdata sheet to the motor manufacturer or supplier forreview.Figure 2: P215RM Remote-Mount PressureActuated Condenser Fan Speed ControllerTable 1: Features and BenefitsFeatureBenefitFan Speed Variation CondenserPressure ControlCreates optimum condenser pressure control all year round and reducesnoise during colder periods (such as nights).Pressure InputAllows direct and fast response to pressure variations.Direct Mount OptionAllows for easy installation.Remote Mount OptionCreates flexibility in mounting location.Setpoint Screw Location onTop of DeviceAllows for easy setpoint adjustment after installation.Built-in Suppression FilterMeets electro-magnetic compatibility requirements.IP65 EnclosureAllows for controller mounting outdoors.Compact DesignFits into small units and has a small turnaround circle.Attractive StylingUpgrades your equipment.Quick Connector Plug IncludedAllows for easy wiring and quick replacement.Style 5 Remote MountEnables direct connection with flexible refrigeration hose.Pressure Range 5-42 barAllows compatibility with all HFC types from R134a to R410a. 2016 Johnson Controls, Inc.Order No. PD-P215PR-FCatalogue Section 4

IMPORTANT: Use this Series P215PR/RMPressure-Actuated Condenser Fan SpeedController only as an operating control. Wherefailure or malfunction of the P215PR/RM could leadto personal injury or property damage to thecontrolled equipment or other property, additionalprecautions must be designed into the controlsystem. Incorporate and maintain other devices, such as supervisory or alarm systems or safety orlimit controls, intended to warn of or protect againstfailure or malfunction of the P215PR/RMController.WiringThe built-in EMC filter is designed for a maximumdistance of 2 meters between the controller and themotor. Non-shielded cable must be used. The gasketmust be placed between the quick connector plugand the controller terminals. The cable jacket mustextend through the grommet. The rubberO-ring must be placed on the screw. Tighten screwsecurely. The screw fastens the connector plug to thecontroller terminals. The gasket, grommet, andrubber O-ring keep the IP65 protection class for thecontroller (see Figure 5).InstallationThe controller must be mounted in an upright positionon the refrigerant line, preferably at the condenseroutlet side, to reduce pressure pulsation as much aspossible.Mount the controller within a 45 angle on both sidesof the top of the high pressure line to avoidaccumulation of oil inside the controller bellows andmaintain the class IP65 rating. See Figure 3.If you are using a pump-down system, the controllerconnection must be made at the high-pressure sideof the system and upstream from the solenoid valveto avoid low pressure during pump-down.The controller (IP65) can be mounted outdoors. SeeFigure 4. When mounted inside a cabinet, holes forair circulation must be provided.Figure 5: Wiring Details!WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock.Disconnect or isolate all power supplies beforemaking electrical connections. More than onedisconnect or isolation may be required tocompletely de-energize equipment. Contact withcomponents carrying hazardous voltage can causeelectric shock and may result in severe personalinjury or death.Figure 3: Mounting Position Range!CAUTION: Risk of Property Damage.Do not apply power to the system before checkingall wiring connections. Short circuited or improperlyconnected wires may result in permanent damageto the equipment.Electro-Magnetic CapabilityThe controller includes a built-in suppression filterand meets required (EC) directives. However, whentwo or more Electro-Magnetic-Compatibility (EMC)compliant components are combined, the entiresystem may not be compliant. It is the end user’sresponsibility to make the entire system compliant.Multiple motors can be wired in parallel, provided thatthe total current does not exceed the maximum limit.MeasuringUse a True RMS meter for measuring amperes orvolt values.Figure 4: Cable Positioning2P215PR/RM Series Pressure Controllers

AdjustmentsSetpointThe setpoint is defined at 90% output value. Thefixed cut-off value is 30% of the supplied voltage. Both the load and the supply voltage can affect thecontroller characteristic. The pressure setpoint at which your equipmentoperates can be adjusted by using the setpointadjusting screw. See Figure 7.Figure 7: Setpoint Adjustment ScrewThe setpoint is factory set at the values shownin the following table.Control RangeFactory SetpointRange 5 to 15 bar9 barRange 10 to 25 bar19 barRange 22 to 42 bar26 barRepair InformationFigure 6: VDC Output Relative toPressure InputThe proportional band is fixed and defined as thepressure difference between the points where theoutput values are 30% and 90% of the supplyvoltage. See Figure 6.5 to 15ProportionalBand3.0 0.7If a Series P215PR/RM Condenser Fan SpeedController fails to operate within its specifications, replace the unit. For a replacement SeriesP215PR/RM, contact the nearest Johnson Controls representative. Provide the model number of thecontrol when ordering a replacement. This number isfound on the data plate. See Table 2 on page 4 forthe Product Selection Chart.Range (bar)10 to 25 22 to 424.5 15.5 1.5The values indicated are shown at 50 Hz powersupply. At 60 Hz power supply, the cut-off andproportional band values decrease by 15%.A built-in (fixed) hysteresis is included in thecontroller. This hysteresis is not indicated in thecontrol characteristic, but is included in theproportional band.P215PR/RM Series Pressure Controllers3

possibility of a leak from a storage tank? MANAGING RISK This starts with the design and build of the storage tank. International codes are available, for example API 650, which give guidance on the matter. The following is an extract from that standard: 1.1.1 This standard covers material, design, fabrication, erection, and testing
