You Are Responsible ForFirearms Safety2 Never rely totally on your Firearm’smechanical “safety” device. Like anymechanical device, a “safety” can sometimesfail; it can be jarred or inadvertentlymanipulated into an unsafe condition. The word “safety” describes a firearm’s trigger blockmechanism, sear block mechanism, hammer blockmechanism or firing pin block mechanism.Mechanical “safeties” are designed to place yourfirearm in a safer status, and no guarantee can be madethat the firearm will not fire even if the “safety” is inthe on safe position. Mechanical “safeties” merely aidsafe gun handling and are no excuse for pointing yourfirearm’s muzzle in an unsafe direction. See “Operationof the “Safety” on page 7 for instructions on theoperation of this firearm’s “safety.”Failure to follow any of the followingwarnings could result in serious injuryor death. As a firearm owner, you accept a set of demandingresponsibilities. How seriously you take theseresponsibilities can be the difference between lifeand death. There is no excuse for careless or abusive handling ofany firearm. At all times handle this firearm and allother firearms with intense respect for their power andpotential danger. Please read and understand all of the cautions, warnings, notices, proper handling procedures and instructionsoutlined in this owner’s manual before using yournew firearm.Remember, safe gun handling does not stop with yourfirearm’s mechanical “safety” devices, it starts there.Always treat this firearm with the respect due aloaded, ready-to-fire firearm.1 ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE OF YOUR firearmPOINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION even though youare certain it is unloaded.Never point any firearm at anything you do not intendto shoot. Be extremely alert and aware of all personsand property within the range of your ammunition. Some firearms do not have a mechanical “safety.”Many target firearms, lever-action firearms and pistolsdo not have manual “safety” mechanisms. Therefore itis critical to read and understand the owner’s manualfor every firearm which explains the safe operation ofthe firearm. 109-056-WRA SXAR OM.indd 17/31/09 2:35:14 PM
Always wear eye protection when disassembling andcleaning any firearm to prevent the possibility ofsprings, spring-tensioned parts, solvents or otheragents from contacting your eyes. While it is a good idea to “test” your firearm’smechanical “safety” periodically for proper function, never test the “safety” while your firearm is loaded orpointed in an unsafe direction.53 Whenever you handle any firearm, or handit to someone, always open the actionimmediately and visually check the firearm’schamber to Make certain that the firearm iscompletely unloaded.Make certain the firearm does not inadvertentlycontain any ammunition. Always keep the chamberempty and the “safety” in the on safe position unlessshooting is imminent.Keep all firearms unloaded duringtransport, even when stored in a holster, gun case, scabbard or other container.6 DROPPING or jarring A LOADED FIREARM CANCAUSE ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE.This can occur even with the “safety” in the on safeposition. Be extremely careful while hunting or duringany shooting activity to avoid dropping any firearm.74 Always WEAR Ear AND Eye PROTECTIONWHEN SHOOTING.Unprotected, repeated exposure to gunfire can causehearing damage. Wear hearing protection (shootingear plugs or muffs) to guard against such damage.Wear shooting glasses to protect your eyes from flyingparticles. Allow proper distance (eye relief) betweena scope and your eye when firing a scoped pistol, rifleor shotgun. Do not use unorthodox shooting methodsthat could cause the rearward travel of the slide orbolt of a firearm to contact your eyes, face or hands.Always keep a safe distance between the muzzleof your firearm and any persons nearby, as muzzleblast, debris and ejecting cartridges could inflictserious injury.hunting from elevated surfaces such astreestands is dangerous.Doing so may increase the risk of mishandling afirearm. The following rules should always be observedby you and those you hunt with. Always make certainthat the stand being used is safe and stable. Alwaysmake certain that your firearm is unloaded when it isbeing taken up and down from the stand. Alwaysmake certain that your firearm is not dropped from thestand, or dropped while it is being taken up or downfrom the stand. Remember, a loaded firearm maydischarge when dropped, even with the “safety” in theon safe position.8 Store your firearm and ammunitionseparately, well beyond the reachof children. 209-056-WRA SXAR OM.indd 27/31/09 2:35:14 PM
Carefully open the action and remove the cartridgefrom the chamber. If the primer is indented, thedefective cartridge should be disposed of in a way thatcannot cause harm. If the primer is not indented, yourfirearm should be examined by a qualified gunsmithand the cause of the malfunction corrected beforefurther use. Glance down the barrel to make sure thatno obstructions remain in the barrel. Completely clearthe barrel before loading and firing again. Failure tofollow these instructions can cause extensive damageto your firearm and possible serious injury to yourselfand others.Take prudent safeguards to ensure your firearm doesnot become available to untrained, inexperienced orunwelcome hands. Store all firearms in secure, lockedcases or a gun safe. Keep your firearm unloaded whennot in use.9 BEWARE OF BARREL OBSTRUCTIONS.Mud, snow and an infinite variety of other objects mayinadvertently lodge in a barrel bore. It only takes asmall obstruction to cause dangerously increasedpressures that can damage your firearm and causeserious injury to yourself and others.BEFORE CHECKING FOR A BARREL OBSTRUCTION,BE CERTAIN YOUR FIREARM IS COMPLETELYUNLOADED, THERE IS Not a LIVE cartridge INTHE CHAMBER AND THE “safety” IS IN THEON SAFE POSITION.11 never insert a cartridge of the incorrectcaliber into any firearm. The caliber of your firearm is marked on the barrel.Store all cartridges of different calibers in completelyseparate and well-marked containers. Never storecartridges of mixed calibers in a common container orin your pockets. See page 11 for more information onthe correct ammunition for your firearm. After assuring yourself that the firearm is completelyunloaded, open the breech or action and look throughthe barrel to be sure it is clear of obstructions. If anobstruction is seen, no matter how small it may be,clean the bore with a cleaning rod and patch asdescribed on page 21 of this owner’s manual.12 examine every cartridge you put inyour firearm. We assume no responsibility for the use of unsafe orimproper firearm and ammunition combinations ordamage or injury caused by damaged ammunition. It is your responsibility to read and heed all warningsin this owner’s manual and on ammunition boxes.See page 11 for more information on the correctammunition for your firearm.10 Be alert to the signs of ammunitionmalfunction. if you detect an off sound orlight recoil when a cartridge is fired, do notload another cartridge into the chamber. If your firearm fails to fire, keep the muzzle pointed ina safe direction for a minimum of 30 seconds. 309-056-WRA SXAR OM.indd 37/31/09 2:35:14 PM
17 BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND BACKSTOP,particularly during low light periods.Know the range of your ammunition. Never shoot atwater or hard objects.13 USE ONLY SAAMI APPROVED AMMUNITION.The barrel and action of this firearm have beenmade with substantial safety margins beyond thepressures developed by established Americancommercial loads. Nevertheless, we can assume noliability for incidents which occur through the useof cartridges of nonstandard dimensions or whichdevelop pressures in excess of commercially availableammunition which has been loaded in accordancewith standards established by the Sporting Arms andAmmunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI).18 ALWAYS UNLOAD your firearm’s CHAMBERBEFORE CROSSING A FENCE, CLIMBING ATREE, JUMPING A DITCH OR NEGOTIATINGOTHER OBSTACLES.Never place your firearm on or against a fence, tree, car or other similar object.19 BE DEFENSIVE AND ON GUARD AGAINST UNSAFEGUN HANDLING AROUND YOU AND OTHERS.Don’t be timid when it comes to firearm safety. If you observe other shooters violating any ofthese safety precautions, politely suggest saferhandling practices.14 Make sure of adequate ventilation in thearea that you discharge a firearm. Leadexposure can occur from dischargingfirearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms or handling ammunition.Lead is a substance that has been known to cause birthdefects, reproductive harm and other serious injury.Wash hands thoroughly after exposure to ammunitionor after cleaning a firearm.20 BE CERTAIN your firearm is UNLOADEDBEFORE CLEANING.Because so many firearm accidents occur when afirearm is being cleaned, special and extreme careshould be taken to be sure your firearm is unloadedbefore disassembly, cleaning and reassembly.15 do not snap the firing pin on an emptychamber; the chamber may not be empty!Treat every firearm with the respect due a loadedfirearm, even though you are certain the firearmis unloaded.Keep ammunition away from the cleaning location.Never test the mechanical function of any firearmwith live ammunition.16 KEEP YOUR Fingers AWAY FROM THE TRIGGERWHILE LOADING and unloading UNTIL shootingis imminent. 409-056-WRA SXAR OM.indd 47/31/09 2:35:14 PM

During the rearwardmovement of the bolt, the empty cartridge case is ejectedout of the ejection port. If there is a cartridge in themagazine, the bolt then returns forward by the force of therecoil spring, picks up a cartridge from the magazine andloads it into the chamber, ready to be fired. If there is not acartridge in the magazine during this movement, the boltlock engages and the bolt remains open.DescriptionThe Winchester SX-AR is a gas-operated, semi-automaticrepeating rifle. The origins of the SX-AR can be tracedback to John M. Browning’s BAR, a rifle that served withdistinction through both World Wars, the Korean War andother conflicts. The ergonomically-designed pistol gripstock features comfortable dimensions to accommodatemost shooting styles. With cartridges in the magazine and chamber, and the“safety” in the off safe position, the rifle will fire a singleround with each successive pull of the trigger until themagazine and chamber are empty. When the last round hasbeen fired, the bolt will lock in the rearmost, openposition. This allows fast, convenient reloading.OperationWhen the trigger is pulled, the firing pin strikes the primerof the cartridge, resulting in the rifle firing. Gas from thefired cartridge travels down the barrel and some is diverted 609-056-WRA SXAR OM.indd 67/31/09 2:35:14 PM
NomenclatureVarious exposed metal parts of this rifle have been coatedat the factory with a rust preventative compound. Beforeusing the rifle, clean the anti-rust compound from theinside of the barrel, receiver, bolt and the action/chamberareas with a high-quality, lightweight gun oil as explainedon page 21.If your rifle is to be stored, it is acceptable to leave the rustpreventative compound on the rifle and keep it in itsoriginal packaging. Never fire the rifle upon purchasewithout cleaning it first. If the rifle contains hardenedgrease or other substances that you cannot remove, havethe rifle checked by your dealer or a qualified gunsmith. In conventional firearm terminology the position andmovement of firearm parts are described as they occurwith the firearm horizontal and in the normal firingposition: i.e., the muzzle is forward or in front; thebuttstock is rearward or to the rear; the trigger isdownward or underneath; the rib is upward or ontop. For general parts nomenclature, refer to Figure 1on page 6. Figure 2, on pages 8-9, covers the generalfeatures and benefits of the SX-AR design. Throughoutthis owner’s manual the “action” refers to the mechanismof this rifle which loads and secures the cartridges inthe chamber.Operation of the “Safety”Serial NumberAlways keep the “safety” in the on safe positionunless shooting is imminent. Always keep themuzzle pointed in a safe direction. Failure tofollow these warnings could result in seriousinjury or death. The serial number is located on the left side of thereceiver, just above the trigger. Record the serial numberat the front of this owner’s manual for future reference.Initial Cleaning and OilingThe SX-AR rifle utilizes a “safety” located on the triggerguard just rearward of the trigger. (Figure 3, page 10). Thislocation is easily manipulated with the index finger ofeither hand. With the “safety” pushed completely to theright, the rifle is in the “on safe” position, and rearwardmovement of the trigger is completely blocked.WEAR EYE PROTECTION WHEN assembling andDISASSEMBLING YOUR rifle TO PREVENT springs,spring-loaded parts, SOLVENTS OR OTHER AGENTSFROM CONTACTING YOUR EYES, resulting in injury. 709-056-WRA SXAR OM.indd 7(Continued on page 10.)7/31/09 2:35:14 PM

Have adequate ventilation atall times. wash hands thoroughly afterhandling ammunition. The location of thebolt lock. The bolt lock is located on the right side of the receiver, just to the rear of the forearm (Figure 5). It automaticallyengages after the last cartridge in the magazine has beenfired and locks the bolt to the rearmost, open position. The barrel and action of this rifle have been made withsubstantial safety margins over the pressures developedby established American loads. However, we assume noresponsibility for incidents which occur through the useof cartridges of nonstandard dimension or thosedeveloping pressures in excess of SAAMI (SportingArms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute)established standards. The bolt lock can also be used to lock the bolt in therearward position when the magazine is removed. To lockthe bolt in the open or rear position, pull the operatinghandle all the way to the rear and press upward on thebolt lock.Magazine CapacityTo release the bolt when no magazine is in the rifle andthe bolt is locked rearward, pull the operating handle tothe rear to disengage the bolt lock and release the handle. This will allow the bolt to return to the forward position. The SX-AR magazine is unique for the rifle and shouldnot be used in other rifles. No other magazine type shouldbe used in your rifle. The specialized design makes themagazine highly reliable and easy to maintain. 1109-056-WRA SXAR OM.indd 117/31/09 2:35:15 PM
