PrefaceYouth Ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist Church hasgone through several phases, always evolving into a more specialized ministry toan important segment of the church’s population. This evolution has taken the churchfrom the early beginnings when youth work was blended with Sabbath School to thisday when youth ministry is divided into clearly defined areas of interest, but pursues thesame goals.Three levels of ministry to youth are active in youth ministry today:Adventurer Ministry· To reach and help children 6-9 years oldPathfinder Ministry· To reach, help, and train youth 10-15 years oldSenior Youth Ministry· To work with youth and young adults 16-30 years oldFormer manuals have had a mixture of all three ministries. However, this manual isdesigned specifically for senior youth leaders, and instructions regarding Pathfinder orAdventurer ministries have been omitted. For more information about those ministries, contact your local conference/mission office. This is a handbook for guiding the AY Society, or any type of senior youth organization inthe local congregation, and is also the training manual for Adventist Youth Leadership.Although the Master Guide and the Adventist Youth Leader Training Courses serveas the foundation for youth leadership on the local church level, this handbook dealsprimarily with the development of Adventist Senior Youth Leadership. Obviously, the general principles discussed here are also applicable to both Master Guides andsenior youth leaders. In addition to the principles contained herein, those receivingtraining as Master Guides should study material in the area of Pathfinder, SabbathSchool, and Children’s Ministries in general.iii

Since the introduction, implementation and elimination of the past Church MinistriesDepartment, youth ministry has experienced dramatic changes and challenges, in somechurches, our youth were neglected, even before and to the point of closing the Adventist Youth Society, and consequently youth involvement and youth witnessing in thosechurches. The result has been devastating, and urgent action is needed to provide thesolution in a visionary and responsible way, and to lead our youth in the right direction. This handbook is designed to address youth ministry in accordance with these changes, face the challenges in a positive way and give youth leaders a “how-to” guide for theyouth organization in the local church. Certainly, it will satisfy a great need and will bea useful tool for the implementation and strengthening of the Adventist Senior YouthMinistry around the world. This material is not the work of one person, but a combination of contributions frommany persons from all the world divisions. We express thanks to the hundreds of youthleaders around the world who have made this manual possible, and especially to theSouth Pacific Division Youth Ministry Resource Committee that provided several chapters and have contributed extensively to the content.Youth Ministries DepartmentGeneral Conference of Seventh-day Adventistsiv

An Explanationof the Eight ModulesEight Modules are incorporated in this Youth Ministry Handbookand Leadership Training Manual, each dealing with a differentaspect of senior youth leadership.OrganizationThe Organization Module presents the history and organization ofyouth ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The strong emphasis is on youth ministry based in the local church, and not a ministry based on conference-organized activities. Responsibilities of the leaders at the local church level are also covered in this module. The content of this module will help the local church in its ministryto young people, and will aid the local conference/mission personresponsible for youth affairs in developing a training program forlocal church youth leadership.LeadershipThis module incorporates aspects of training and actual practiceof those activities required for senior leadership, and includes bothphilosophical base and practical practices. Emphasis is placed onqualities of idea leadership, the psychology of leadership, leadershipstyles and functions, and practical matters such as how to chair acommittee or business meeting.CommitmentThe Commitment Module primarily revolves around those activities and programs that are devotional in nature, and that provide forspecial affirmation and celebration opportunities.Weeks of Prayer or Weeks of Spiritual Emphasis are outlined, inwhich a seven-day period of time is selected for a concentrated thrustof personal relationships with the Lord through fellowship, intensescriptural study and communion. Also featured are Bible Conferences with ideas and helps for church and school youth groups.vii

A n E x p l a n at i o n o f t h e E i g h t M o d u l e sAnother devotional feature, the Morning Watch, is targeted for individual or family time at the beginning of each day. CommitmentCelebration is a time of reaffirmation of a youth’s continuing faithand confidence in God, the celebration of his or her baptism, whichmay have taken place recently or at some time in the past. This module is dedicated to strengthening the spiritual life of youthand youth leaders as they participate in the devotional features ofAdventist Youth Ministry.DiscipleshipThis module deals with how to help youth become disciples andstay committed to that way of life. Extensive presentation on thepsychological aspect of youth leadership is given. Growth and nurture group leaders specializing in the spiritual well-being of theirmembers will find resources in this module to accomplish all thatmight be desired whether in youth or family situations. The ultimate objective is discipling others to the Lord and equipping themto share in this experience.WorshipWorship is not merely attending church. The religious exercise ofworship includes learning to live in God’s presence, and integratingthose things learned at church into one’s daily living. The purposeof this module is to give youth leaders ideas to help Adventist youngpeople discover the joy of worship, and how to adopt a worshipfulspirit while attending church. (We are indebted to the South Pacific Division for most of the material published in this module.)WitnessingWitnessing, the sharing of our own individual experience in theLord, is among the first and foremost ministries in which the discipled Christian will want to engage. In this module, we will discuss effective witnessing and how it mightbe accomplished within the AY Society. For example, Festivals ofthe Word are usually large central meetings held over a three or fourday period. In association with the meetings, an intensive effort ismade in outreach and redemptive ministries to the city where theFestival is held. Fellowship, spiritual understanding, and enrichment are only a few of the joys experienced by the participants.FellowshipviiiThis module is designed to guide youth leaders in finding resourcesto help provide meaningful recreation for the AY Society. Youthmust be guided to discover and take part in meaningful recreation,in addition to learning how to deal with their leisure time. Recreation and entertainment must be defined and proper practicesthat reflect the Adventist lifestyle adopted. This module will helpto provide answers to these needs.

A n E x p l a n at i o n o f t h e E i g h t M o d u l e sEmpoweringYouthThis module is a summary of the whole purpose of Youth Ministryin the Seventh-day Adventist Church. A Salvation and Service focused Youth Ministry through Discipleship, Leadership, Evangelismand Service/Mission does empower Youth to be strong Christiansand participants in the mission of the church. In other words, thissection combines the above modules into four strategic themes.ix

How to Use This ManualThis manual has a dual purpose. First, it is to serve as a handbook for theyouth organization in the local congregation. Those working with youth will find it useful and will consult it often for“know-how” and resources. It is basically organized into eight modules, eachdealing with a different aspect of youth ministry, and it is in harmony withsuggestions outline in Youth Ministry Accent. Materials from Accent can always be used with this handbook, since material appearing in Youth MinistryAccent is intended to enhance the content of this handbook and to sharpenthe skills of youth leaders.Second, this is the basic text for presenting the ten-hour course for youthleadership. The organization for this course is as follows:Subjects to be Covered in Leadership Training SeminarsOrganization Module–2 hoursLeadership Module–4 hoursChapter 1–in the Steps of the Master (1 hour)Chapter 2–Psychology of the Christian Leader (1 hour)Chapter 3–Leadership Theories, Styles, and Functions (1 hour)Chapter 4–When You Are the Chairperson (1 hour)Commitment Module–1/2 hourChapter 1–Youth Upreach (½ hour)Discipleship Module–2 hoursChapters 1, 2, and 3–Youth, the Crisis Age; Adolescent Developmental Stages and Some Implications for Youth Ministry; Basic PersonalityDesires (1 hour)xi

Youmay want to cover one module in more depth than another to accommodatespecific needs of individual youth leaders. Books like Getting It Right, published by the Review & Herald, offer invaluable materials, and the Pastor’sand Elder’s Handbook for Youth Ministry, prepared and published by the YouthMinistries Department and Ministerial Association, is a must for every localchurch leader.xii

IntroductionPhilosophy and Theology for Youth MinistryWorking with young people can be one of the richest and mostrewarding experiences in ministry. To face up to the challengeof finding meaningful answers to their questions can prove to bedeeply satisfying and fulfilling. On the other hand, trying to understandtheir needs and satisfying their demands as they search for meaning andpurpose in life can be extremely frustrating. However, the greatest senseof achievement in ministry comes when a youth leader sees young peopleresolve their search for identity and belonging by making a commitment toenter into a life-long relationship with God; by inviting Jesus Christ to beLord of their lives. In spite of these possibilities, many people hardly know where to begin. It isa real challenge to know how to sustain an ongoing ministry that will meetthe ever-changing needs and demands of this age group. In an effort to “dosomething for young people” many so often settle for providing them simplywith plenty of “fun and games” in the hope that they will soon outgrowtheir youthful stage and channel their boundless energies into somethingmeaningful and worthwhile. The church has put together a relevant and effective youth ministry. Toforfeit our responsibility to effectively involve young people in the ministryof the church is to place at risk the whole future of God’s Kingdom.Much of the ineffectiveness in youth ministry is related to lack of directionand understanding about what needs to be achieved. We need to establish aclear and simple statement that outlines our philosophy of ministry, for, andwith young people. This philosophy of ministry needs to be biblically based and theologicallysound. It must be relevant to the contemporary needs of young people andprovide adequate answers to all the vital issues and concerns that they face.To be seen as successful it must be practical and achieve the commitment andinvolvement of young people in the fellowship and mission of the church.xiii

IntroductionYouth ministry is not something that exists alongside the ministry of thechurch. It is an integral part of the church and it is ministry. It is philosophyis based on the same foundational principles that undergird the ministry ofthe whole church. The four independent forces that sustained the life ofthe early church (see Acts 2:42-47) and continue to provide motivation forthe growth of the church today are the same dynamics in all successful youthministry. The ongoing interplay of these dynamics in and through the church may bediagramed as follows:Fellowship: Christianity begins with and is about relationships in whichindividuals are bonded together in fellowship with Christ and one another. The church demonstrates its warm fellowship through its love for and acceptance of young people.Nurture: Through fellowship, personal and spiritual growth is nurtured. The Christian church shows its understanding of the developmental needs ofyoung people (and adults) and how to facilitate that growth.Worship: Worship is celebration of these relationships. The communityof faith has the ability to release in young people a sense of celebration incorporate worship and individual praise of God.Mission: Mission is the church’s intentional plan to extend these relationships to others. It achieves this through the affirmation of the individualyoung person’s spiritual gifts and the utilization of these gifts in reaching outbeyond himself or herself to uncommitted young people and adults.Adventist Youth Ministry is a specialized ministry of the church that (1) seeksto address the particular needs of young people in their own environment andrespond to them as they are, and (2) to incorporate them into the fellowshipof the church—a caring Christian community. This whole model of youth ministry is given expression through individualswho, in their lives, reflect the life and ministry of the incarnate Christ. Justas He humbled Himself and left the glories of heaven to identify with sinfulhumanity, so in simple humility youth ministry seeks to come to young peoplewhere they are and offer to them a sense of love, acceptance,
