Four Yellow Jackets are hitting .290 or better - Parada(.328), Luke Waddell (.313), Andrew Jenkins (.301),and Malloy (.290). This marks the second time Tech has been to HawkinsField in the postseason. The Jackets went 3-2 in the 2013Nashville Regional. Parada and Waddell both also rank tied for eight in theleague with 66 hits on the year apiece. The #CardiacJackets have been on full display in May,playing in seven one-run ballgames in their last 11 games,winning five of them. Tech ranks second in the ACC in hitting (.283), first inhits (525) and doubles (19), while ranking second in onbase percentage (.375), second in walks (238) and thirdin scoring (6.6). Kevin Parada ranks 13th nationally with 20 doubleson the year, while Justyn-Henry Malloy (45) and TresGonzalez (39) rank second and fifth, respectively, in theACC in walks. Waddell remains the toughest to strikeout in the ACCand the 12th-toughest nationally, averaging 13.2 at-batsper strikeout this season. Tech will look for its stalwart starters LHP BrantHurter (3.74 ERA), Andy Archer (5.45 ERA) to besharp down the stretch. True freshman RHP Marquis Grissom, Jr. hasworked five or more innings in two of his last three starts,holding teams to two or fewer runs in two of them. Last season, Tech posted a dramatic 4-3 win on Feb. 18at Georgia Southern and walked off Virginia Tech on Fridaynight in its lone ACC weekend to finish 2-2. Since 2002, Tech has posted a nearly 60-percent winpercentage in one-run games (.586).GT BASEBALL RECORD IN ONE-RUN GAMES- SINCE 769.586IT STARTS AT HOME. “It Starts at Home” has been the offseason motto forGeorgia Tech, putting an emphasis on getting victories atMac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium aftergoing 26-11 in 2019. Since 1985, Tech has won a whopping .755 percent of itsgames at home (965-312-1). Georgia Tech struggled at home this season in a rarity,losing six-straight at home (its most since 1976). Tech rebounded and finished 7-1 at home to close theregular season. Since 2002, Tech has only hit below .300 at home in twofull season – 2017 and 2021. In 28 games at home in 2021, Tech hit .298.REGIONAL HISTORY Georgia Tech will battle at Hawkins Field for the secondtime in program history and the first time since 2013 whenTech was the regional runner-up. That series saw Josh Heddinger pitch a complete-gameshutout over 1-seeded Vanderbilt to force a winner-take-allchampionship game. All-time, Georgia Tech is 59-15-1 against Vanderbilt withTech having won 10 of the last 13, dating back to 1954. Georgia Tech picked up where it left off the last twoseason, ranking second in the ACC and 51st nationally witha .283 average. Tech is also hitting .298 at home this season (28 games). Four Yellow Jackets are hitting .290 or better - KevinParada (.328), Luke Waddell (.313), Andrew Jenkins(.301), and Justyn-Henry Malloy (.290). In the month of March, Georgia Tech hit .305, but wentcold in April, hitting just .259 in 16 games. Tech is back tohitting .288 through 15 games in May. Tech ranks second in the ACC in hitting (.283), first in hits(525) and doubles (19), while ranking second in on-basepercentage (.375), second in walks (238) and third inscoring (6.6). Looking to continue the Jackets' offensive power will bethe likes of Waddell, Reid, Compton, Hall and Parada. Preseason second-team all-American Waddell remainsone of the top shortstops and table setters in America,earning shortstop of the year semifinalist status in 2019and leading off Team USA vs. Japan in 2019. Compton remains one of the top underclassmen in thecountry. He finished second on the team with three homeruns and 12 RBI, as well as four doubles and triples. In addition to the elder statesmen, an infusion of youthlike Kevin Parada and Jake DeLeo from Georgia Tech'ssecond-straight top-8 recruiting class proves to provide theJackets plenty of options.INFIELDERS Georgia Tech baseball returns perhaps one of thecountry's elite middle infield combo in shortstop LukeWaddell and second baseman Austin Wilhite. Waddell moved to shortstop full-time during the 2019season but instantly made his way toward becoming anationally lauded defender, getting named a semifinalist forthe Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year award. Waddell was named a second-team all-American byD1Baseball and named to the preseason Golden SpikesAward watch list during the 2021 preseason. Waddell has continued to play the part of table setter,hitting .314 with 65 hits, 11 doubles, six home runs and atriple to reach base at a .413 clip. In May, Waddell has hit .381 for 24 hits, four doubles, atriple and homer for 10 RBI, reaching base .461. Waddell had a streak of 91-straight games batting leadoffsnapped April 11-13 when Gonzalez led off. He had his team-best 26-game reached base streak(dating back to last season) snapped against Wake Forest(March 19-21).@GTBaseball Waddell also showed off his new power at the plate withhis first career grand slam on March 7 in a comeback bidvs. Pitt. Waddell broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh against NC Stateon Feb. 27 when he launched a three-run homer, hissecond of the year - the first of three-straight home runs. Waddell continues to be one of the toughest strikeouts inthe nation, leading the ACC and is 12th nationally at 13.2at-bats per strikeout. He made his debut on March 3, 2020 against TennesseeTech, working just one inning and touching 91 mph withhis fastball. Jenkins hit .364 through the first four games of the 2020season before suffering an injury that wound up taking himout of the remainder of the year. Wilhite played in his 200th game as a Yellow Jacket onMarch 21 and made his 200th start at Georgia Tech aweek later on March 28. Due to the shortened season, Wilhite was limited to justthree appearances and 4.0 innings, but dealt a 0.00 ERAand three strikeouts, surrendering only two hits. Malloy, a transfer from Vanderbilt, has been ultraimpressive defensively at third base, hitting .290 on theseason. On the road, he leads the team at .366. Wilhite is off to a terrific start, both defensively andoffensively, hitting .263 in 49 games for 41 hits, 10doubles and two home runs, and 19 RBI. Wilhite also returns as Tech's top base thief, stealing 14bases over the last two years and getting caught just one. He ranks second in the ACC with 45 walks (17th in US). Wilhite has been red-hot on the road, ranking third on theteam with a blistering .323 average in 18 road games. Wilhite continues to be a force in double plays amassing41 double plays in 2019 and four double plays in 2020.
