It gives us a chance tomeet people from other lands and talk aboutour common interestsIn March 2004, the FINA Bureau, awardedthe XI FINA World Masters Championshipsto United States Aquatic Sports. The WorldMasters championships includes all theaquatic disciplines; swimming, diving, open water swimming , synchronizedswimming. Pacific Masters Swimming tooka lead role in the management of the WorldchampionshipsPacific Masters membership increased 8.4%over the prior June year-to-date, resulting inthe highest numbers in our history. Over 170Olympians competed at the championships.A few had not competed in years - DebbieMeyer said it was her first major meetsince ʻ68 - she enjoyed it so much she saidto her 82 year old father, “Weʼre going toPerth” “What do you mean we?” “Youʼreswimming the 50.”There were articles written about thechampionships in newspapers all overthe world! In San Francisco, all the majorTV stations did a story on the worldchampionships.Over 3,300 international athletes traveledfrom 74 countries to attend Worlds atStanford, the largest international swimmingmeet ever in the Western hemisphere. Therewere over 1,300 Pacific Masters swimmerswho competed. They competed with the bestin the World while staying home. The goal of the meet was to have the bestcompetitive conditions for the athlete. Forthe athlete, it was seamless. The registrationprocess took less than 10 minutes for mostcompetitors. The marshalling area went well. For Americans, it was different having to sitand wait to be led to the blocks - the coachesloved it. They could see their swimmersthere and not worryOne hundred sixty one people or teamsbroke world records. This was over 50%higher than the previous high water markof 105. I saw very few events, but I didmake it a point to see the fastest heat ofthe 200-239 Mixed Freestyle relay as someof my friends from Walnut Creek Masterswere swimming in it with a very fast teamand a chance for a World Record. WalnutCreek broke the World Records by a secondand half to come in third. Four teams brokethe world record. Ten teams broke the meetrecord - an entire heat. The championshipsset a very high standard for a competitivemeet.Walnut Creek covered all the timingpositions for one day. They also had themost points of any team.Swimmers met other swimmers from allover the world. The tent village became theplace to meet. Friendships were made. Forthe closing ceremony, Anne Cribbs calledthe Australian consulate asking if therecould be a representative from the consulatewhere there would be a ceremonial passingof the FINA flag. Consul General DavidLawson said he was be happy to receive theflag as he had competed on a BMW relayteam on relay day.The relay day was originally set up asshort day we thought would be muchfewer competitors and maybe allow for theofficials to have half a day off. There werealmost 1500 team entries, many of thosewere from Pacific. Relay day did prove tobe a very popular day with the athletes. This was not a one man show - we had over1000 people volunteer. Enough cannot besaid about the sports heads:o Barry Fasbender who ran the Swimming. He had major surgery in May and thencame back. Over 5000 swimmers were hisresponsibility.o Phylis Quinn and her open watercommittee - they had possibly the best everopen water competition. The water waswarm (for an open water event), the coursewas great - it had flat water, a chute to swimthrough and then rough water. And a big thank you to Stanford There were 7424 athletes who enteredan incredible facility with a great staffthe meet. 5535 Swimmers signed up. 922- They set standard for future WorldOpen Water Swimmers, 200 divers, 319Championships.Synchronized Swimmers; 996 Water PoloPlayers - 74 teams - this was the first time Thank you to everyone who volunteeredwomen competed in multiple age groups. at the meet and to everyone who swam. MEMBER COMMENTARYSo I was asked to swim the TransTahoe Race this year. Since myfavorite event is the 50 free (or the 50breaststroke, depending on the day),this presented new opportunities, andnew challenges.I had only swum two open waterraces --ever. One was Lake Del Valle, the closest one near my home, and itlooked like a good bet, because it wasa lake setting, in Livermore, where itgets HOT! None of this ocean wateror Sierra runoff, where the watertemperature is still below 70 degreesin August. The second race was inItaly in the Adriatic after the last FINAWorld Championship. Since it was theAdriatic, they promised that the waterwould be warm. I was already there, soI did it as a lark, and it was fun, and Ithought, “Okay -- Tahoe, lots of peopledo that swim, this will be good .”So I thought, isn’t this what Mastersswimming is about? Broadening yourhorizons, and doing new things? ButI started talking to people and theystarted making me really nervous.First, it was their shocked expressionwhen I told them I was going to dothis. “You know, it’s 11 miles?” they’dsay and I thought, well there are sixpeople on a team, so this will be likea workout, right (except no wall orstopping between sets)? Then they toldme about how I really needed to getout my ski gear, including the parkaand gloves. That Tahoe weather wasunpredictable, and that I needed atleast three swimsuits, to change intoafter I swam each leg, because it was areally long swim and the water wouldbe cold and I would get cold and thethermos of coffee or tea or soup wouldnot be enough to warm me up .youget the idea. And I started to get a little worried andI thought “I’ve made a big mistake I’dbetter do some of these open waterswims before the Tahoe swim .”The open water swims are very verydifferent than the meets that PacificMasters puts on. Like the meetsin pools, they are quite organized, with lifeguards making sure thatall competitors actually finish, andidentifying numbers and caps requiredfor competition, so that they can assurethat every one is accounted for. Butthey are also quite relaxed. They drawa very different crowd than the poolmeets. There are some pool swimmers, but many swimmers are only openOpen Water NotesLeianne Crittenden, Walnut Creek Masterswater racers or triathletes. At every raceI went to there was a registration tablefor new Masters swimmers.get up early to do these races - I wasusually home by late morning or earlyafternoon .These are the people who are justgetting warmed up after 1200 metersor so. A pool race of less than a milereally does not appeal to these folks. They get in the water, many withoutwarming up, and they just go andgo and go .They do not want tosee lane lines or wall, they like justswimming for the enjoyment andsense of accomplishment it gives them. They enjoy the personal satisfactionof completing a challenging course. They don’t mind a little green algaedown their suit or fish between theirtoes (literally), with cold showersafterwards (no locker rooms with hairdryers for these folks!).The Tahoe swim was really fun, I canbest describe it like Bay to Breakers buton water. Like Bay to Breakers, it has avenerable tradition, and many regularparticipants. It takes a fair amount ofplanning, since it starts early and youneed a boat to pilot you (since the CoastGuard is monitoring the race, but theyare not going to watch out for 700 crazyswimmers starting at 8 am). Yes, thereare 700 swimmers in this event andthey range from the ultra competitiveteams recruited from the finest distanceswimmers, to the crazies out for adelightful day. The race starts off fromthe beach and the first swimmer hasthe nerve wracking task of meeting upwith his boat. So of course, many boatshave flags, balloons, pirate insignia orother bright markings to make it easierto find them. The sun is not even overthe mountains when it starts and itreally was magical to see. And it wasa delightful day. I was assured thatthis was “very very unusual,” but itwas 90 degrees outside and 70 in thecool blue beautiful water. Of course, the night before we were treated toa beautiful show of lightning andthunder, so I tend to think that some ofthose stories about the ski parkas andgloves were true .It was a lot of fun,but I still have not figured out if theywere pulling my leg in Italy when theywere asking me if I brought my jellyfishrepellant (“I didn’t sign up for jellyfish- if there are jellyfish I won’t be goingin there !”).I got up to the second Beryessa race (Iwas not clued in that there are generallytwo races -- one and two miles --andmany competitors finish, then turnright around and swim again, withouta second thought about it). All of thevenues are not marked on the GPSsystem, since they are usually in a parkor on a river or at a lake, and so I thinkI was the very last entrant that signedup before they folded their tables. This race is one of the largest PacificMasters sponsored events all year(bigger than PMS Championshipmeets, with Trans Tahoe being thesecond largest), and there were lots ofpeople enjoying the beautiful weather, the wonderful refreshing lake waterand just having fun! It was a hard swimfor me, since I worry about which sideof the buoy you need to turn around(just follow all the others) and whichbuoy is the turn (just follow all theothers), and how you actually finish therace (you mean you have to stagger upa beach without any shoes?), and howyou make sure that your ID tag doesnot fall off in the lake. All of theseworries are of course surmountable, and everyone is very helpful.Every open water race I went to,they finished with some kind of foodand socializing afterwards whilepeople waited for results. Just likethe pool races, they all know eachother and enjoy swapping storiesabout memorable open water swims.Hearing about the Santa Cruz onesmade me shiver just to think about, but these guys like this stuff. And theySince I was turning into an aficionadothis summer, I did do the Openwater swim at this year ’s WorldChampionships (hey, it was only tenminutes from my house - why not?).And it was challenging, but accordingto my teammates (who actually dothese kinds of swims), that race was areal open water swim with challengingswells and winds. It’s a good thing I had all that practicethis summer! For a complete copy of the annualHawaii Sports Calendar which includespool and ocean swims, send SASEto: The Waikiki Roughwater SwimCommittee, 95-230 Waioleka #39,Honolulu HI 96789Pacific Masters Swimming USMS Swimmer Magazine Insert November-December, 2006
