level 5Teacher’s notesTeacher Support ProgrammeDr ZhivagoBoris PasternakAbout the authorBorn in Moscow in 1890, Boris Pasternak was broughtup in a cultured Jewish household. He at first intendedto be a musician, before deciding to study philosophyat Moscow University. During the First World War heworked in a chemical factory, and after the Revolutionhe worked for the Soviet commissariat of education.His first volume of poetry was published in 1913; withthe publication of his third volume, My Sister, Life, in1922, he was recognised as a major new lyrical voice.However, Pasternak’s work was regarded as goingagainst the Communist Party line, and from 1933 to1943 he was unable to publish anything, and survived bytranslating great European writers. Pasternak’s lifeworkwas Dr Zhivago, which he submitted to a leading Moscowperiodical in 1956. It was rejected as being politicallyunsound. It was published in Italy in 1957 and Pasternakwas awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature a year later.However, this led to persecution in his own country, andhe was unable to accept the award. He died in 1960, agedseventy, suffering from cancer and heart trouble. It wasnot until 1987 that Dr Zhivago was finally published inRussia, and the recognition that was Pasternak’s due wasfinally granted him.SummaryDr Zhivago tells the story of five young people as theylive through the Russian Revolution, when the Russianmonarchy is overthrown and the world’s first Communiststate is established. There is Yury Zhivago, brilliant andidealistic doctor, poet and writer; Tonya, who is a lawyerand Yury’s wife; Lara, a nurse; her soldier husband, Pasha,who is an inspired leader of men; and Misha, philosopherpearsonenglishreaders.com Pearson Education Limited 2016and friend to Yury. Yury Zhivago is the true hero ofthis epic story – we see the turbulence and danger ofthe Revolution and the First World War through hiscompassionate eyes. Yury, while married to Tonya,falls deeply in love with Lara, a woman of mystery andmagnetism. Both Yury and Lara love their families. Buttheir love for one another seems destined. They meet,are parted by the ravages of war, meet again and areparted once more. Although the end of the story mayseem tragic, it is not, for their love transcends death itself.Chapter 1: It is 1901. Yury Zhivago is a young boystanding at his mother’s funeral. Having been abandonedby his father long before, he is taken up by Uncle Kolya,a citizen concerned with the political ideas of the time.Chapter 2: Yury’s father is on a train talking to MrGordon, a lawyer about his financial troubles. He jumpsoff and kills himself. Uncle Kolya sends Yury to live inMoscow with the rich Gromekos.Chapter 3: Lara Guishar’s mother owns a strugglingshop and is under the influence of the evil Komarovsky,a friend of her late huband’s. He introduces her to aworld of luxury and she belongs to him. Her best friendPasha is secretly in love with her. The situation in Moscowworsens.Chapter 4: During one of the Gromekos’ musical parties,a violinist is called back home to see a dying friend: Lara’smother has tried to kill herself. Yury and her friend Mishasee Lara and Komarovsky. Misha recognises him as theman who was on the train with Yury’s father.Chapter 5: Lara shoots Komarovsky at a party but misses.He realises she has the power to hurt him but does notwant to risk his reputation by being linked to her. Hedecides to find her a place to live but he will stay awayfrom her. Yury recognises Lara. Tonya is devastated byher mother’s death.Chapter 6: Yury marries Tonya. He works as a doctor ina hospital in Moscow. They have a son. Lara marries Pashaand they move out of Moscow to become teachers. Theyhave a daughter. Their relationship is complicated, and sohe joins the army.Chapter 7: Yury is working at one of the army’s hospitals.When Misha visits, they discuss the horrors of the newregime and the war. They make plans to leave togetherbut the Germans attack and Yur r work: (page 44) Ask students to work in pairsand discuss this statement: Yury is unfaithful to hiswife with Lara.
