When we return there will be a fully packed three weeks before the close ofthe first semester and winter break. It is hard to believe that only three (school) weeksremain until the third quarter begins!On November 18th we hosted the second annual Naturalization ceremony. After alengthy and involved process, twenty-one guests representing 21 countries alongsidethe Department of Homeland Security swore their oath of allegiance for the UnitedStates of America and became citizens during a ceremony at Patriot Oaks. Five ofthese new citizens were active members of the US military, which made the eventeven more special. It was both an honor and excellent learning opportunity for our 5thand 7th grade students. We thank everyone who helped make this a memorableoccasion.To find out more about your child’s day and to help make learning visible, here is a quick strategy called:Peak and PitWhat was the “peak” and the “pit” of yourlearning today?Teachers use this to wrap up daily lessons, activities, and unitsto deepen their students’ understanding of moments wherethey felt stuck or challenged and how they got through it. Thepeak is defined as a moment of achievement or success inlearning, which may have stemmed from being in the pit anddigging their way out! Ms. Rose’s third grade class celebrated Veterans Day in a bigway! They sent “thank you” notes and “thank you” crafts to anairmen and his crew deployed in Afghanistan. The studentswere very proud of their creations which included cards, modelsof jets, an eagle, flags, and other symbols that they connect toveterans.The package is in route to Afghanistan and the class is awaitingan email to confirm its arrival. The students are excited to hearhow their acts of kindness touched the lives of militarypersonnel overseas.Exciting News from the Botball Team!The 2015-2016 Botball Documentation Team recently applied for partial fundingfor its annual registration fee and was awarded an 1,100 scholarship from theNASA Robotics Alliance! The best part about this great news is that the application was 100% student-written and submitted! The Documentation Team is responsible for setting goals for our robotics team and monitoring them all season. There are three reporting periods during the season where their work willbe scored, and an on-site presentation will be delivered and judged at the regional competition in May. The work of the Documentation Team makes up over 33%of our team’s overall score at the competition – and I’d say they’re off to a greatstart!
