He stillspends a great deal of time onthe road touring, and he didn’tnecessarily need to return as ajudge to “American Idol XIV,”airing Wednesday at 7 p.m. onFOX. He likes working withfellow judges Jennifer Lopezand Keith Urban and hostRyan Seacrest, but for Connick, it is about the music.“I wanted to come backand do ‘Idol’ after my firstyear,” Connick says, “primarilybecause of how much fun Ihad. It’s a great chance to sitand listen to amazing youngperformers and do a little bitto help sort of mold their decisions and careers. It’s a greatopportunity, and I am having areally good time.”Of the three judges,Connick is a bit tougher, buthe always gives constructivecriticism. “I think being a fairjudge kind of comes down tojust that, being fair,” he says. “Ithink you have to be spontaneous. I think it’s importantto be honest and focus veryintently on the person that’s infront of you, and if you reallyclear your mind and listen andfeel, almost invariably you willcome up with something to saythat will be of help to them.”The audience doesn’talways appreciate his opinion,but he takes it all in stride. Thebooing has become a regularpart of his life. “When I go intoa Starbucks and order a latte,people start booing me,” Connick says. “I think things likethat happen a lot more.”One of the more positivemoves the producers madethis season will help contestants with their careers, andConnick approves. “There havebeen a lot of changes on ‘Idol’from year to year, and I thinkthere are some substantialones this year,” says Connick.“One of the bigger changes wasthe addition of Scott Borchetta, who is a really talentedmusic industry professionalwho knows a lot about whatit takes to go from point A topoint B. A lot of people havethis amazing opportunityon ‘American Idol’ to launchtheir careers, but many timesthey don’t know what to do.What kind of records do youmake? Who do you call to geta manager or agent? There areall of these kinds of questionsand he is really good at that.I mean, he did it with TaylorSwift. The whole ‘Idol’ team isexcited to have him.”There are other mentorsConnick would like to see onthe show. “I think about KimBurrell, who is a great gospelsinger, and Kelli O’Hara, whois a great Broadway singer,” hesays. “You think about Prince,Stevie Wonder and people likethat. There are a ton of peoplewho would be awesome.”The show has alwaysbeen youth-centric, but thisyear the judges are lookingfor performers who might beprofessionally and emotionally ready for the platform theshow provides.“We have seen someamazing talent this year – it isalways interesting,” Connicksays. “As much experience asI have in show business, youstill have first impressions.Sometimes people will comeinto the room and your firstimpression is ‘Wow, I wonderif they’re going to be anygood,’ or ‘Boy, this person justlooks like they can sing,’ andsometimes it’s exactly the opposite.
